Quick Note: I’ve noticed several new subscribers lately.
Although I’m genuinely touched that anyone would wish to subscribe to me, I thought perhaps I should make it known that I VERY rarely post anything new. Every now and then I may make some songs I have public (that are not usually public) it’s VERY rare.
Just thought I’d you all give a heads up so you don’t expect more…
I was requested to sing this version of Mary’s Lullaby composed by Wanda West Palmer. The lady thought my voice would fit. 🙂
I gave it a go. Sorry if it’s not the best recording. I did it with my daughter’s gaming microphone. lol
If nothing else, I’ve been told my voice really does make people sleepy. I suppose you could use it to lul yourself to bed. 😉
Hope anyone who hears it enjoys it though. 🙂
Thanks
Gretchen

“Mary’s Lullaby (Tonight You Are Mine)”

Text by Bertha Anderson Kleinman (1877-1971). Music by Wanda West Palmer (1930-).

I discovered this song on The Lower Lights’ latest album, Sing Noel, which released this week. Their rendition, with three-part harmonies and guitar accompaniment, is lovely indeed: reverent, earthy, and sweet. Follow the link to purchase the track, or if you have a Spotify account, you can listen below.

For non-Spotify users, here is a video performance by YouTube user iammischief:

“Mary’s Lullaby” really humanizes the Nativity event. All the grand, flashy details that are so familiar to passers-on of the story—of angels and kings, shepherds and stars—are deemed secondary to the profound yet simple intimacy shared between mother and son. Mary knows that Jesus belongs to the world—“but tonight,” she says on the night of his birth, “you are mine.” Let angel, man, and beast adore you in their own ways, but I give you the adoration of a mother.

As she sings Jesus to sleep, Mary pleads with God to delay for as long as possible the agony that she knows they will both one day face. She tries to suppress the portents of her son’s death so that for at least this one night, all will be perfect.

According to a 2005 article in the Payson Roundup, Bertha Kleinman wrote this poem in 1967 at the request of a friend, who needed material for a Christmas program; she titled it “A Yuletide Lullaby.” The poem was passed on to Wanda West Palmer that month so that she could set it to music, but she ended up pocketing it for later. Two years later, she rediscovered it in her purse while in a beauty parlor and was instantly inspired. She wrote the music in her head on the spot. The song was eventually performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the recording of which is available on CD. As I said before, The Lower Lights also offers a fabulous recording of their own, with Cheri Call on lead vocals.

Below are the lyrics, along with a piece of art that provides further substance for reflection on the subject of the Mary-Jesus bond.

All mine in your loveliness, Baby, all mine;

All mine in your holiness, Baby Divine.

Sing on, herald angels, in chorus sublime;

Sing on and adore, for tonight you are mine.

The wise men are coming to worship their king.

The shepherds are kneeling, their homage to bring.

Out yonder, the star over Judah will keep;

No harm can befall thee, then sleep, Baby, sleep.

Oh, let me enfold thee, my baby, tonight;

While legions are singing in joyous delight.

A new star has risen to hail thee divine,

For you are a king, but tonight you are mine.

Away, spectered future of sorrow and plight.

Away to the years that must follow tonight.

The pangs of Gethsemane, let them be dim;

The red drops on Calvary, not, Lord, for him!

Oh, let me enfold thee, my baby, tonight;

While legions are singing in joyous delight.

A new star has risen to hail thee divine,

For you are a king, but tonight you are mine.

All mine in your loveliness, Baby, all mine;

All mine in your holiness, Baby Divine.

Sing on, herald angels, in chorus sublime;

Sing on and adore, for tonight you are mine.

“Tonight You are Mine”

Many years ago, as Karen was accompanying many of the choir and special musical numbers during the Sacrament meeting Christmas program, I was left alone to wrestle with our very young children. So, while the music and talks were likely very enjoyable and deeply spiritual, such niceties had alluded me. Instead, I was ankle deep in Cheerios, sticky with the residue of fruit snacks, and trying in vain to rescue the pew from the orange remains of the smiling cheddar gold fish.

Yet somehow, in the midst of my weekly parental plight, I heard what I thought to be the beautiful voice of an angel singing a song that instantly pierced my distracted heart. When I looked up to see where this single, solitary solo stemmed, off to the corner of the choir seats stood our friend Nancy.

We had known her for years and I was well aware of her talents on the piano, but I was unaware of her ability to sing. But, as talented as Nancy was, she was not immune to the difficult trials of mortality. She bore the unfortunate burden osteoarthritis that twisted her fingers and joints and caused her constant pain. Yet in spite of this challenge, she stood there singing a song that conveyed to me the Mary’s tender feelings just after the birth of Jesus.

Mary, like Nancy, bore a life of pain. Mary’s pain would be emotional and spiritual as she had to witness the challenges her first-born Son faced throughout His life. But the song Nancy sang captured the feelings of a loving mother tenderly cradling her new-born Baby as if to shield Him from becoming a “man of sorrows acquainted with grief.”

The woman who wrote the lyrics to this song contemplated the feelings this humble Mary might have had as she experienced the miraculous events of angelic choirs yet looked beyond the grandeur of night to the horrors of the future. This night, this first Christmas Eve, Mary wanted this Baby, who would mean so much to so many, to simply be hers.

All mine in your loveliness, Baby, all mine;

All mine in your holiness, Baby Divine.

Sing on, herald angels, in chorus sublime;

Sing on and adore, for tonight you are mine.

The wise men are coming to worship their king.

The shepherds are kneeling, their homage to bring.

Out yonder, the star over Judah will keep;

No harm can befall thee, then sleep, Baby, sleep.

Oh, let me enfold thee, my baby, tonight;

While legions are singing in joyous delight.

A new star has risen to hail thee divine,

For you are a king, but tonight you are mine.

Away, spectered future of sorrow and plight.

Away to the years that must follow tonight.

The pangs of Gethsemane, let them be dim;

The red drops on Calvary, not, Lord, for him!

Oh, let me enfold thee, my baby, tonight;

While legions are singing in joyous delight.

A new star has risen to hail thee divine,

For you are a king, but tonight you are mine.

All mine in your loveliness, Baby, all mine;

All mine in your holiness, Baby Divine.

Sing on, herald angels, in chorus sublime;

Sing on and adore, for tonight you are mine.

While the story of Christmas is filled with wonder an awe, let’s not lose sight of the human side of this glorious event. There, on the floor of the dirty yet sacred stable sat a young mother holding her new born baby for the first time. This touching scene was embedded in my heart through a little known song sung by a dear friend many years ago.

Mary’s Lullaby

While Joseph watches through the night,

Thy precious life has just begun;

Lullaby, my child so dear.

1. Lullaby, lullaby, my little one.

Lullaby, my child so dear.

Lullaby, lullaby, my little one.

2. Thy gentle head shall wear a crown,

For thy Father is the King.

Thy tender hands, so tiny now,

Have blessings great to bring.

Let all creation join my song,

For peace and love this night are born.

Tonight You Are Mine

Today was our church Christmas program. The choir sang this beautiful rendition of Mary’s Lullaby. If you have a minute, take the time to listen.

When I think about the lyrics of this song, I always get a little choked up. I can’t imagine the feelings that must have been in Mary’s heart as she held her newborn son. Six years ago, a couple of months after Carson was born, I played Mary in a reader’s theater depicting the women in Christ’s life. The feelings that I had that day are still vivid in my mind, but these are the thoughts that I wrote down right after that experience so many years ago:

I have acquired so much admiration and respect for Mary. How inadequate she must have felt when she learned that she would be the mother of the promised Messiah, yet she was full of faith and confidence in the Lord. There she was in Bethlehem, ready to give birth to the Savior, with nowhere to go except a stable – a place where animals are kept. How she must have longed for a better place to give birth to her child – especially this child. How she must have looked in wonder upon her newborn son – knowing who he was, but seeing a helpless baby whom she would have the responsibility and privilege to care for, raise, and love. Having very recently gone through the experience of bringing a new life into the world, those feelings are still fresh in my mind. I have looked in wonder at my own newborn child. I have looked into his eyes and imagined what he would grow up to become. I have felt of his spirit – perfect and fresh from Heaven, and wondered how I could possibly prepare him adequately to fulfill the mission that he has here. It is so much different from the experience of Mary, but, in some ways, very much the same. Her son was the Messiah. She knew of his mission, and what her role would be. And yet, she was able to hold, cuddle, feed, nurture, and care for that baby, just like any mother does for her child. She was able to teach him, love him, and watch him grow – just like any mother. I do not wish to compare myself to Mary, for I know that there is no comparison to such a noble and righteous woman. The only similarity that I wish to bring out is that, like so many of us, she was a mother. I believe that all mothers share a common bond. We have all walked hand in hand with God, and marveled at the miracle of the creation of a new life within us. We have all felt overwhelmed and inadequate as we have held our tiny infant, realizing that God has entrusted us with one of his precious children to raise. We have all wondered what we can possibly do to make sure that this innocent and pure infant cradled in our arms will grow up to do what the Lord has sent him here to do. With that in mind, I am in awe as I think of Mary and the enormity of the task that was hers, for her child was not just any child. He was the Savior of the world. There is no doubt in my mind that she was truly blessed among women. She was chosen of all women to bear the Christ child who was destined to save all of us. At the end of the day, that is what Christmas is all about – the birth of a king. It is a celebration of the humble way that he came into the world, and the perfect life that he led. All of the other festivities of Christmas pale in comparison. Christ is the reason for the season. It is keeping that perspective amidst the craziness that is the challenge.

Though I have moved beyond the stage of having babies, I still ponder Mary’s experience each year at Christmas time. It reminds me of the importance of motherhood, and how much the Lord values mothers. He could have sent his son to the earth is majesty, but instead sent him as a helpless, humble baby through the miracle of birth. His mother played a huge role in teaching him and preparing him to accomplish the will of his Father.

And so it is with all mothers. Our children will not walk on water, raise the dead, or die on a cross for the sins of the world, but I believe that they are also destined to accomplish great things. As mothers, we can help them to discover that greatness within themselves, embrace it, live it, and share it with others. A tall order, indeed, but one that we do not have to do alone. Our children were God’s before they were ours, and I believe that He will help us navigate the often turbulent waters of motherhood with greater confidence and increased perspective if we come unto Him.

With that in mind, I hope you have a very Merry Christmas. I will be taking the next week off to enjoy time with family and friends, and I hope you will do the same.
