In this video we look at Pope John Paul II and the apparitions of Medjugorje.
Saint Pope John Paul the second once powerfully observed, “Today’s world has lost its sense of the supernatural, but many are searching for it; and find it in Medjugorje, through prayer, penance, and fasting.”
The late pontiff and now canonized saint, his holiness, spoke these words on August 1, 1989, while addressing a group of Italian physicians studying the apparitions in Medjugorje with medical and scientific investigations.
It is no secret within Rome that Saint John Paul the second loved Medjewgoria, once even acquiring the nickname “Protector of Medjugorje” within the Vatican.
Even eminent American intellectuals were no strangers to this reality.
The great Franciscan Friar, Father Benedict Groeschel, himself an investigator of supernatural phenomena, once admitted this about Pope John Paul in a revealing interview: “I can tell you for a fact that the pope loves Medjugorje from afar and would go there in a minute if the theologians would let him.”
While it is known that the late Polish pope never personally visited Medjugorje, what is less known is that throughout the last two decades of his life Pope John Paul held personal meetings and correspondences with Medjugorje visionaries, priests, inner locutionaries, and numerous pro-Medjugorje bishops.
His enthusiasm and love for Medjugorje’s mystics was overwhelming and filled with abundant respect and a joyful beauty overcome with hope.
He met personally with Mirjana Soldo and Vicka ivankovic as well as the locutionists Jelena Vasilj and Marijana Vasilj.

Pope John Paul II and Medjugorje

Medjugorje in Light of the Pope’s visit to Sarajevo

The Pope has come and gone from Sarajevo, and he did not visit Medjugorje as many had hoped he would due to the Pope’s obvious goodwill toward the events in the parish of Medjugorje. We remember that the Croatian president, Dr. Franjo Tudjman, immediately preceding the Pope’s coming to Sarajevo testified before an assembly of politicians and priests that Pope John Paul II in their last conversation said that on the occasion of his visit to Sarajevo he wanted also to visit Medjugorje. The local bishop Dr. Ratko Peric was also present for this testimony and did not say a word at that.

What the Pope said behind the scenes to the assembled church leaders in Sarajevo is not known and most likely will not be known. What is known is his question about who is the provincial of the Franciscan Province in which the parish of Medjugorje is located. Also known is his mentioning the name of Medjugorje with a smile on the occasion of his arrival in Sarajevo, at the supper in the Catholic School of Theology and at his departure from Sarajevo. In general no great stir came from all that.

Spirits were upset only after the usual papal general audience on the Wednesday immediately after the Sarajevo visit. According to reports of the news agencies, the Pope on that occasion among other things said: “In the course of the war pilgrimages of the faithful to the Marian shrine in Bosnia-Hercegovina did not stop as also not in other parts of the world, especially in Loreto, in order to request the Mother of Nations and the Queen of Peace to intervene in that suffering region.” These words of the Pope were interpreted by many as his indirect recognition of the Medjugorje events.

It is difficult to say what the Church will undertake regarding the Medjugorje events in the near and distant future. Since the Bishops’ Conference of Yugoslavia no more exists, there is no longer a commission which was established by it with the charge of accompanying the events in the parish of Medjugorje. The Church therefore will, to be sure, have to do something. Medjugorje in the meantime will proceed on its course and that sentence of Sacred Scripture which says a tree will be known by its fruits will be realized.

The Pope, Medjugorje and the Provincial of the Hercegovina Franciscans

The visit of Pope John Paul II to Bosnia-Hercegovina April 12 – 13, 1997 was a visit which many had hoped would end with a visit of the Pope to Medjugorje, since in several references he had expressed such a desire. Unfortunately, that did not happen. Nevertheless, the Pope did not forget Medjugorje.

At the Sarajevo airport April 12 the very first to await the Pope’s arrival were the bishops and provincials of Bosnia-Hercegovina. When the provincial of the Sarajevo Province, Fr. Peter Andjelovic, as the first of the provincials approached the Pope to greet him, the Pope asked him the question, “Medjugorje?”. He pointed to Dr. Fr. Tomislav Pervan, the provincial of Hercegovina who said, “I am from Mostar and Medjugorje.” The Pope nodded his head with satisfaction and twice repeated, “Medjugorje, Medjugorje”. All TV viewers who watched the presentation of the Pope’s arrival also saw it.

While the Pope prayed with those gathered in the Sarajevo cathedral he prayed twice referring to the Queen of Peace for Bosnia-Hercegovina. Many of those present interpreted it as having recourse to the Queen of Peace from Medjugorje.

After supper in the Sarajevo Catholic School of Theology Fr. Tomislav took advantage of the occasion to personally present the Pope with the newest photo-monograph on Medjugorje which the Franciscans who work in the parish of Medjugorje had sent to him. On that occasion he spoke to him briefly about Medjugorje. The Pope did not say anything, but by the expression on his face, he accepted both the former and the latter with satisfaction and interest.

On the occasion of the Pope’s departure from the Sarajevo airport Fr. Tomislav Pervan by way of greeting said, “Holy Father, we are expecting you in Medjugorje.” The Pope answered with a smile, “Medjugorje, Medjugorje” as was visible also on TV screens.

The President of Croatia, Medjugorje and the Pope

According to the Dayton peace accord the Republic of Croatia and the Federation of Bosnia-Hercegovina should one day enter a confederal relationship. One of the essential ways of attaining that goal is joining together on the economic level. Therefore the Croatian President, Dr. Franjo Tudjman, on March 15, 1997 participated in the re-opening for production of the local aluminum factory in Mostar.

After the festivities in Mostar the Croatian President, by his own expressed desire, came to visit the Shrine of the Queen of Peace in Medjugorje. He was welcomed on the part of the local people by the Provincial of the Franciscan Hercegovina province, Fr. Dr. Tomislav Pervan, and the Medjugorje parish pastor, Fr. Ivan Landeka. Moved by the meeting at the shrine and the cheers of the large gathered crowd of over 30,000 people that came to greet him from all parts of Bosnia-Hercegovina, Mr. President stayed for a talk with the assembled priests. Present were not only the priests that work in Medjugorje, but also priests from the surrounding parishes. Present at the same time, as also in Mostar, were the local bishop Dr. Ratko Peric and a group of 15 of the highest ranking officials of the Republic of Croatia and the Federation of Bosnia-Hercegovina.

Among other things, Dr. Franjo Tudjman also said the following: “Again I repeat that on the occasion of my last conversation with him Pope John Paul II said that, on the occasion of his visit to Bosnia-Hercegovina, he would like also to visit Medjugorje.”

The latest news says that the Pope, nevertheless, will not visit Medjugorje on April 13. But, it’s good to know that he wished to.

Statements of Pope John Paul II about Medjugorje

These statements are not verified by the Pope`s seal and signature but are brought to us by persons in whom we may trust. Because of this we have inserted them under the title of “Documents”.

In a private conversation with the visionary Mirjana Soldo the Pope said: “If I were not Pope I would already be in Medjugorje confessing.”(1987). Mons. Maurillo Kreiger, former bishop of Florianopolis (Brazil), visited Medjugorje four times. His first visit was in 1986. He writes as follows:”In 1988, I was with eight other bishops and thirty three priests on spiritual retreat in the Vatican. The Holy Father knew that many of us were going to Medjugorje afterwards. After a private mass with the Pope, before leaving Rome, he said, without having been asked anything,”Pray for me in Medjugorje”. On another occasion, I told the Pope ” I am going to Medjugorje for the fourth time”. He concentrated his thoughts and said, “Medjugorje, Medjugorje, it`s the spiritual heart of the world”. On the same day I spoke with other Brazilian bishops and the Pope at lunch time and I asked him:”Your holiness, can I tell the visionaries that you send your blessing?” He answered:”Yes yes”, and embraced me. To a group of doctors, who work for the defence and protection of the life of the unborn, the Pope said on the 1st of 1989,”Yes, today the world has lost the sense of the supernatural. In Medjugorje, many seek and re-find this sense in prayer, fasting and confession.” On November 11, 1990, the Korean national weekly newspaper (“Catholic News”) published an article by Msgr. Angelo Kim, President of the Korean Bishops’ Conference: “Prior to the conclusion of the last Bishops’ Synode in Rome, the Korean bishops were invited to a lunch with the Holy Father. On this occasion, Msgr. Kim addressed the Holy Father directly and said, “Father, thanks to you, Poland was able to liberate itself from Communism”. To this, the Holy Father responded, “No, this is not my merit. This is the work of the Blessed Virgin Mary, as She had predicted in Fatima and in Medjugorje.” Archbishop Kwangju said to the Holy Father, “In the town Nadju in Korea, the Blessed Virgin is crying …” The Pope replied, ” … There are bishops, as in Ex-Yugoslavia, who are against it … but it is important to become conscious of the great number of people who are responding to Her call, the number of conversions… All this is emphasized in the Gospel. All these facts have to be examined seriously.” The above-mentioned paper made the following statement, “This does not concern the decision of the Church. This is a comment made by our Holy Father. It can be said without exaggeration that one should not underestimate this …” (Excerpt from: “L’Homme Nouveau”, February 3, 1991) (“Naša ognjišta”, XXI., 3, Tomislavgrad, 1991, p. 11) The Archbishop Kwangju said to the Pope:” In Korea, in the town of Nadju, Our Lady cries…” The Pope answered ” There are Bishops, like in Yugoslavia for example who are against this….,but it`s important to look at the great number of people who are answering the her invitations, the amount of conversions…all this is underlined in the Gospel, all these facts have to be seriously investigated.”(L’Homme Nouveau, 3. February 1991.) The Pope said to Fr. Jozo Zovko on the 20th July 1992: “Busy yourself with Medjugorje, look after Medjugorje, don`t tire. Persevere, be strong, I am with you. Watch over, follow Medjugorje.” The Archbishop of Paraguay, Mons. Felipe Santiago Bentez, in November of 1994 asked of the Holy Father, the Pope if he was right to give approval to the faithful gathering in the spirit of Medjugorje, especially with the priests of Medjugorje. The Holy Father answered: “Approve all that is related to Medjugorje”. In the unofficial part of the meeting of Pope John Paul II with the Croatian delegation of Church and State held in Rome on the 7th of April 1995., the Holy Father amongst other things said that there was some possibility of renewing his visit to Croatia. Together with this he mentioned the possibility of arriving in Split, and from there on to the shrine of “Marija Bistrica” and Medjugorje. (“Slobodna Dalmacija”, 8th of April 1995, page 3.)

Pope John Paul II wrote positively about Medjugorje

Our Lady’s apparitions in Medjugorje were credible for the Pope, which can be seen from his private correspondence with a renowned Polish journalist Marek Skwarnicki and his wife Zofia.

Marek and Zofia Skwarnicki published four letters written by the Pope himself on 30.03.1991, 28.05.1992, 8.12.1992 and 25.02.1994. These are the first published documents written by John Paul II on behalf of Medjugorje.

“I thank Zofia for all that is linked to Medjugorje”, writes John Paul II in his letter dated 28.05.1992. “I am connected to each one of those who are praying there and receiving from there the call to prayer. Today, we grasp better this call.”

In his letter dated 25.02.1994, John Paul II is writing on behalf of the war in former Yugoslavia: “Now, we can understand Medjugorje better. Now, when we have before our eyes the proportion of this great danger, we can understand better this motherly persistence”.

Marek Skwarnicki, who knows Karol Wojtyla since 1958, is editor of the catholic weekly “Tygodnik Powszechny” and of the monthly “Znak” which is published in Krakow. He is a member of the Pontifical Council for Laity and was present on numerous journeys of the Pope.

Pope St. John Paul II’s Great Love for Medjugorje

The Chains of Our Sins Can Be Removed Today through the Portiuncula Indulgence! Don’t Miss This Incredible Grace!

Medjugorje and St. John Paul II

May 18th is the 100th anniversary of St. John Paul II’s birth.

Pope John Paul II called Medjugorje “the confessional of the world” and said that if he were not Pope that he “would be living in Medjugorje as a priest helping to hear confessions.”

On April 6, 1995, he made public his desire to go to Medjugorje and wrote to friends in Poland, “We every day return to Medjugorje in prayer.” He concluded his daily private Rosary in the Vatican gardens with the prayer, “Our Lady of Medjugorje, pray for me.”

He told visiting pilgrims in Rome, “Our Lady of Medjugorje will save America.” He wrote to friends in his own hand, “I thank Sophia for everything concerning Medjugorje. I too go there every day as a pilgrim in my prayers. I unite in my prayers with all those who pray there or receive a calling from prayer from there. Today we have understood this call better. I rejoice that our time is not lacking in people of prayer and apostles. Medjugorje is better understood these days. I myself am very much attached to that place.”

Medjugorje visionary Mirjana Soldo spoke about Pope John Paul II and Medjugorje. On October 3, 2009, she was asked whether she had ever met with Pope John Paul.

Mirjana answered, “I am the only one of six visionaries who was lucky enough, had the honor, to encounter Pope John Paul II. You can imagine how the other five are jealous of me,” she said with a smile.

“I was in the Vatican,” she continued, “St. Peter’s Basilica, with an Italian priest. The Holy Father was walking by and he was blessing us. When he approached me, he blessed me and he just continued to walk. However, this Italian priest loudly said to him, ‘Holy Father, this is Mirjana from Medjugorje.’”

“The Pope came back and blessed me again. As he left, I said to the priest, ‘He just thinks I need a double blessing.’ But then after, he received a note, an invitation to Castel Gandolfo, close to Rome, in order to see the Pope. I couldn’t sleep all night because I really loved him and I respected him and I could really feel his love for Our Lady.”

“So the next day when he and I met alone, I was just crying. I couldn’t say a word because I was so excited. He noticed that I was excited. I think he tried to talk to me in Polish because he thought in the Slavic languages there are things in common. I didn’t understand a word!”

“But finally I had enough strength and courage to ask him, ‘What are you trying to tell me?’ Then we talked. Among other things he said to me, ‘I know everything about Medjugorje. I’ve been following Medjugorje. Ask pilgrims to pray for my intentions, to keep, to take good care of Medjugorje, because Medjugorje is hope for the entire world. And if I were not Pope, I would have been in Medjugorje a long time ago.’ ”

“A priest told me that from the very beginning,” Mirjana continued, “the Pope was very fond of Medjugorje because two months before the apparitions in Medjugorje started, the Pope was praying to Our Lady to come again on earth. He said, ‘I cannot do it all alone because Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Poland etc, are all Communist, I cannot do it on my own. I need you.’ And later he heard that in Yugoslavia, a Communist country, in a little village, Our Lady appeared. Then he said, ‘That is a response to my prayers.’ ”

Mirjana concluded, “On the Mount of Apparitions, I saw a pair of shoes of the Pope in front of me. After the apparition, the gentleman who brought these shoes (he didn’t introduce himself) said, ‘It was the Pope’s desire for a long time to come to Medjugorje. So I said to him, ‘If you do not go, I will take your shoes.’ And that is how I brought his shoes, so they may be present during the apparition.’ ” And that is how the Pope’s desire to come to Medjugorje was satisfied.

Letter to Pope John Paul II

The parish priest of Medjugorje wrote the following letter to Pope John Paul II at the request of Medjugorje visionary, Marija, who was told by Our Lady on November 30, 1983, to contact the Holy Father and relay the information contained in this letter. The letter began by saying:

“After the apparition of the Blessed Virgin on November 30, 1983, Marija Pavlovic came to me and said: ‘The Madonna says that the Supreme Pontiff and the Bishop must be advised immediately of the urgency and great importance of the message of Medjugorje.’”

His letter sought to fulfill that duty.

In the letter to Pope John Paul II of 2 December 1983, published by René Laurentin in “The Virgin appears at Medjugorje?”, Queriniana, Brescia 1984, pp. 156-158, reports the revelations received by Mirjana in 1982 and he confided to him on November 5, 1983, with this significant introduction:

“During the apparition of December 25, 1982, according to Mirjana, Our Lady confided her the tenth and last secret and revealed the dates in which the different secrets would occur. The Virgin has revealed to Mirjana many aspects of the future, so far more than those told to the other seers. This is why I report here what Mirjana told me in the interview on November 5, 1983.

Summarize the essential aspects of his story, without quoting to the letter:

– Before the visible sign that will be given to humanity, there will be three warnings to the world. Warnings will be events that will happen on earth. Mirjana will be a witness. Three days before one of the warnings, she will inform a priest of her choice. The testimony of Mirjana will be a confirmation of the apparitions and an incitement to the conversion of the world.

After the warnings, the visible sign will come on the site of the apparitions in Medjugorje, for all of humanity. The sign will be given as a testimony of the apparitions and an invitation to faith.

– The ninth and tenth secrets are serious. They are a punishment for the sins of the world. Punishment is inevitable, because the conversion of the whole world should not be expected. Punishment can be mitigated by prayers and penance, but it can not be avoided. According to the seventh secret, an evil that threatened the world was canceled thanks to prayer and fasting, says Mirjana. For this reason, the Virgin continues to invite to prayer and fasting: – You have forgotten that with prayer and fasting you can ward off war and suspend natural laws.

St. John Paul II and Medjugorje

– After the first warning, the others will follow shortly. Men will have time to convert.

– This time is the period of grace and conversion. After the visible sign, those who will remain alive will have little time for conversion. For this reason, the Virgin calls for urgent conversion and reconciliation.

– The invitation to prayer and penance is destined to ward off evil and war and above all to save souls.

– According to Mirjana, we find ourselves close to the events predicted by the Virgin. In the name of this experience, Mirjana tells humanity:

– Convert yourselves as soon as possible, open your hearts to God.

In addition to this essential message, Mirjana says she had, in 1982, an apparition that casts, in our opinion, rays of light on the history of the Church.

– Excuse me for this, but you must know that Satan exists; one day he presented himself before the throne of God and asked permission to tempt the Church for a certain period. God allowed him to test it for a century. This century is under the power of the devil, but when the secrets that have been entrusted to you are fulfilled, his power will be destroyed. Already now he begins to lose his power and has become aggressive: he destroys marriages, raises discord between priests, creates obsessions, murders. You must protect yourself with prayer and fasting; especially with community prayer. Take blessed symbols with you. Put them in your homes, resume the use of the holy water. “

St. John Paul II and Medjugorje

Other messages received from Mirjana

“THURSDAY 15 AUGUST 1985, Feast of the Assumption

Message to the parish: – Dear children, today I bless you; I repeat it to you. I love you. I invite you to live my messages.Today I bless you with a solemn blessing that the Almighty has granted me.

To Mirjana: – My angel, pray for the unbelievers. People will tear their hair, brother will beg his brother, he will curse his past life, lived without God. They will repent, but it will be too late. Now is the time of conversion, after four years have passed since I exhort you. Pray for them.

– Invite everyone to recite the rosary.

Mirjana: – Appearing, the holy Virgin greeted me, saying:

– Jesus be praised.

Then she spoke of non-believers:

– They are my children. I suffer for them. They do not know what awaits them. You have to pray more for them.

We have prayed with her for the weak, for the unhappy, for the abandoned. After the prayer, he blessed us. Then he showed me, like in a movie, the realization of the first secret. The earth was desolate. “The upheaval of a region of the world”, she said. I cried.

– Why so early? I asked.

– There are too many sins in the world. What to do if you do not help me? Remember that I love you.

– How can God have such a hard heart?

– God does not have a hard heart. Look around and see what men do, and then you will no longer say that God has a hard heart.

– How many are those who come to church as in the house of God, with respect, with a solid faith and love of God? Very few. This is a time of grace and conversion. We must exploit it well.

Father Petar Ljubicic was chosen by Mirjana to reveal to the world the first three admonitions, three days before the event. “- Video here too

Another question to Mirjana: “But these secrets are not all sad or serious? No, he replied smiling, but most “

[R. Laurentin, The Apparitions of Medjugorje continue, Queriniana, 1986, p. 34].

Similar statements from the other visionaries:

“I asked Ivanka later […] if the Madonna showed her something about that secret. Ivanka, almost in tears, replied: “But I would have died if he had shown it to me!”

[J. Bubalo, A thousand meetings with the Madonna, cit., P. 96]

On 8 December 1982, to appear serious during the apparition is Vicka, who confirms in the interview: “Just then I alone received the eighth secret.” [Ibid., P. 97]

On December 8, 1983, Marija received the ninth secret and commented: “Perhaps I had never known him” [Kronika ukazanja (Chronicle of the Apparitions), cit., 8/12/1983, vol. II, p. 677].
