Possessing the gates of your enemy
You may wonder what is meant by the title of this article. To possess the gates of your enemy, in ancient times, meant to have control over your enemy. It does, however, also have a spiritual meaning. If so, what are these gates and who is our enemy? These gates we are referring to are spiritual gateways and our enemy is satan and his hordes. It is written:
Ephesians 6:12
12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
This scripture is about spiritual warfare, a war we signed up for when we became believers. The purpose of this article is to show you, firstly what these gates are and secondly, how you too can possess the gates of your enemy in order to curb the destruction that satan has planned for you.
We first need to establish a firm foundation which we find in Scripture.
Abraham’s blessing
Part of the blessing given to Abraham was that his seed would possess the gates of their enemy.
Genesis 22:17
17 indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore ; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies.
A similar blessing was pronounced over Rebekah by her family on her departure to become the bride of Isaac, son of Abraham.
Genesis 24:60
60 They blessed Rebekah and said to her, “May you, our sister, Become thousands of ten thousands , And may your descendants possess The gate of those who hate them.â€
Take note that the same Hebrew word “ zera ” is used in both the blessing YHVH gave Abraham and the blessing given to Rebekkah by her brothers. The Hebrew word is in both cases in singular form even though it was translated differently. It can be translated as seed, offspring or descendants.
Let’s specifically look at the blessing YHVH gave Abraham. Who is the seed of Abraham YHVH is referring to here? To answer this, we will use scripture to interpret scripture. Paul gives an interpretation in the letter to the Galatians.
Galatians 3:16
16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,†as referring to many, but rather to one, “And to your seed,†that is, Messiah.
From this interpretation, it is clear that Y’shua is the One who possesses the gates of the enemy, He has all authority. Y’shua confirmed this:
Matthew 28:18
18 And Y’shua came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
Philippians 2:10–11
10 so that at the name of Y’shua every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Y’shua Messiah is Lord, to the glory of Elohim the Father.
We also learn from scripture that Y’shua has given us authority over the enemy.
Luke 10:19
19 “Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you.
The context of this verse is spiritual warfare. The seventy, who were sent out exclaimed on return to Y’shua that even the demons obeyed them in His Name. This was Y’shua’s reply to them. Y’shua has given this authority to us too.
John 14:12
12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.
This is a topic that is not spoken of much, and to our detriment, for in not standing in the authority Y’shua has given us, we allow the enemy to have free reign in our lives. This can be changed…
Now that we have established authority, we need to understand what these gates are.
Physical Gateways
We learn the following from scripture about physical gateways:
Gateways provided access
Gates provided access into towns and villages, temples and houses. Gates serve both to allow and to limit access. Gates provided a physical barrier.
Gates were for protection.
Watchmen were placed high up on the walls by the gate in order to give alarm when danger approached (2 Sam 18:24). Gates were made of wood, sometimes covered with metal (bronze) with iron bars. Gates like this were seen as indestructible.
Psalm 107:15–16
15 Let them give thanks to YHVH for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! 16 For He has shattered gates of bronze And cut bars of iron asunder.
Isaiah 45:2
“I will go before you and make the rough places smooth; I will shatter the doors of bronze and cut through their iron bars.
Gates were places where judgement was spoken.
People would go to the gates when a determination was to be made regarding right and wrong. It was at the gate that government and law was decided on and communicated to the people. Here judicial decisions were made. The king often had a seat or throne in the gate for these purposes. (2 Sam 19:8; 1 Kin 22:10)
Elders gathered in the gates to make rulings and decisions. (Is 29:20-21; Amos 5:10; Deut 21:18-19)
Deuteronomy 21:18–19
18 “If any man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey his father or his mother, and when they chastise him, he will not even listen to them, 19 then his father and mother shall seize him, and bring him out to the elders of his city at the gateway of his hometown.
Key decisions were made in the gates
A good example is found in Ruth 4:1-2. here boaz went to the elders in the gate as Ruth’s kinsman redeemer. This is explained in Deut 25:7
Joshua 20:4
‘He shall flee to one of these cities, and shall stand at the entrance of the gate of the city and state his case in the hearing of the elders of that city; and they shall take him into the city to them and give him a place, so that he may dwell among them.
The gate was also a general meeting place
Gateways were the social fibre of the community – here norms and values were determined. Friendships and social connections were made.
Proverbs 31:23
Her husband is known in the gates, When he sits among the elders of the land.
Proverbs 31:31
Give her the product of her hands, And let her works praise her in the gates.
Psalm 69:11–12
11 When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them. 12 Those who sit in the gate talk about me, And I am the song of the drunkards.
See also Est 2:21–22; Gen 19:1; Neh 8:3
The gateway was the market place
The economy was controlled in the gateway.
2 Kings 7:1
Then Elisha said, “Listen to the word of YHVH; thus says YHVH, ‘Tomorrow about this time a measure of fine flour will be sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, in the gate of Samaria.’ â€
See also Neh 8:16; Neh13:19
There are many references in scripture to gates. Gates were significant in the Bible. When we consider how gates functioned, we understand how important it was for a city or community to be in possession of their own gateways. If their enemy had possession, the enemy would be able to control every facet of their lives.
We also know that the spiritual always mirrors the physical. Understanding the physical gives us insight into the spiritual realm. So, when we go further and consider these physical gateways as representative to spiritual gateways, we understand how essential it is for us to possess our own gates and not to let it slip into possession of the enemy. Allowing this would allow the enemy to have control over every facet of our lives: our economy or finances, our social norms and values, friendships and social connections, everyday key decisions, government and laws, and our physical protection. A gateway in ancient context had a major influence over the lives of the people within the gates. So, whoever controlled the gateway controlled the lives of the people.
Other gates mentioned in scripture are: the gate of heaven (Gen 28:17), the gates of Hades (Matt 16:18); gates of righteousness (Ps 118:19); gates of death (Job 38:17). These references confirm that gates can indeed be spiritual.
We can define gateways as places of dominion. By “dominion” we mean a territory or sphere of influence or control.
Gateways can be very personal. We individually have spiritual, soul and bodily gateways.
Our spiritual gateways are that which connect us with YHVH like: seeing YHVH’s hand in our lives, also known as Divine providence, faith, prayer, worship, revelation, obedience.
When we become believers, our spirit is born-again, but our soul and bodies need to be sanctified. Our soul consists of mind, will and emotions. All the baggage needs to be dealt with after we become believers and this process is called sanctification. We have previously written about this. You can read: what is sanctification and why we need it? and The process of sanctification and The results of sanctification.
Our body, for example, has five gateways: touch, taste, smell, sight and hearing.
All our gateways must be subject to Y’shua’s authority. Defilement of any of these gateways will not only affect our lives but also our relationship with YHVH. We certainly wouldn’t knowingly allow the enemy to have access or control of our gateways. Yet, we allow him access because we are not watchmen on the walls of our own gateways. Satan knows these spiritual principles and work hard to control us. Sadly we allow it, due to our ignorance.
We will now share with you what we have learned about possessing gates, our own and that of our enemy using the most powerful weapons we have, YHVH’s word and prayer.
Possessing our gates
When we pray regularly to YHVH, at a specific place, a prayer altar is established. We have written in detail about this in a previous article. We will just recap for you and show you the connection between prayer altars and gateways.
Prayer Altars
In our article about prayer altars https://www.setapartpeople.com/dispelling-spiritual-darkness we expand on the nature of both godly and ungodly altars and on how we can create godly prayer altars and so dispell spiritual darkness and effect change through prayer.
Just to recap, we will show you a very good example in scripture of how a prayer altar creates a gateway to heaven.
The Altar at Bet-El
In Genesis 12:8, we read of Abraham building an altar and calling upon the name of YHVH.
Genesis 12:8
8 Then he proceeded from there to the mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; and there he built an altar to YHVH and called upon the name of YHVH.
The land of Canaan was inhabited by people who did not know YHVH. We read in Genesis 12:6 “ At the time the Canaanites were in the land†From this statement we know what can be expected spiritually. The people of the land worshipped other gods, practiced witchcraft and all kinds of other ungodly practices. What the people did and worshipped was attracting dark spirits and gave these spirits legal authority over the land. The land of Canaan was under a another spiritual principality.
In building altars, Abram was contending with this spiritual darkness, preparing the land spiritually for change. These altars drew the presence of YHVH and broke the powers of darkness. They were like beacons in the physical and spiritual realm, showing that the spiritual authority and atmosphere was changing. Abram was taking territory from the forces of darkness and claiming it for the kingdom of YHVH. This is what spiritual warfare is about. We don’t exist in a spiritual vacuum, we are affected spiritually by what goes on in our area and the country we live in. There is no neutral ground, it is either part of the kingdom of YHVH or the kingdom of darkness. We are fighting a spiritual battle, fighting for territory. Territory equals influence and if we lose territory, YHVH’s kingdom loses influence.2
Then, in Genesis 28:11, we read about Jacob:
Genesis 28:11–19
11 He came to a certain place and spent the night there, because the sun had set; and he took one of the stones of the place and put it under his head, and lay down in that place. 12 He had a dream, and behold, a ladder was set on the earth with its top reaching to heaven; and behold, the angels of Elohim were ascending and descending on it. 13 And behold, YHVH stood above it and said, “I am YHVH, the Elohim of your father Abraham and the Elohim of Isaac; the land on which you lie, I will give it to you and to your descendants. 14 “Your descendants will also be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and in you and in your descendants shall all the families of the earth be blessed. 15 “Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.†16 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely YHVH is in this place, and I did not know it.†17 He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of Elohim, and this is the gate of heaven.†18 So Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on its top. 19 He called the name of that place Bethel; however, previously the name of the city had been Luz.
It is written that Jacob came to “a certain place”. This place was where Abraham previously built an altar to YHVH. This altar created a gateway to heaven and Jacob saw it in his dream.
When Jacob came hither on his way to Paddan- aram we are told that he lighted upon “the place” (Genesis 28:11. Hebrew). The Hebrew maqom , like the cognate Arabic maqam, denotes a sacred place or sanctuary. The maqom was doubtless that at which Abraham had sacrificed, East of the town.3
This gateway to heaven was first established by Abraham when he called on YHVH’s name at that place. This gateway was experienced by Jacob in a dream.
When we call upon YHVH’s name, which means to worship Him and pray to Him, a prayer altar is established and a gateway is formed into the heavenlies . It is often said of Jerusalem that there is an “ open heaven.” We have experienced it every time we were there. I believe it is because so many people there pray to YHVH, there are lots of prayer altars and as a result gateways into heaven. The “ kotel ” or Western wall is a very good example of such a gateway. There are almost always believers there, “servicing the altar.” After Solomon dedicated the Temple to YHVH, YHVH answered Him as follows:
2 Chronicles 7:15–16
15 “Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to the prayer offered in this place. 16 “For now I have chosen and consecrated this house that My name may be there forever, and My eyes and My heart will be there perpetually.
The Temple has been broken down, but the prayer altar remains. We seldom used to go to the wall when we were in Jerusalem because we were of the erroneous belief that the Temple stood where the city of David now is. However, we have investigated this further and based on all the evidence found, changed our opinion. Just before we wrote the article on prayer altars, we were in Jerusalem and we stood at the point looking out over the Western wall and I believe YHVH showed me that this was a portal into heaven, a spiritual gateway. It is a special place, no wonder there is so much conflict about it. Just re-read the above scripture – YHVH said that His name will be there forever, His eyes and heart will be there perpetually. YHVH knew when He said this that the Temple would not stand forever. The future is known to Him. He could have said that His Name, eyes and heart would be there until the Temple’s destruction, but He did not. He used the words forever and perpetually. Could this be the reason why the kingdom of darkness is forever fighting to gain control over it? They want to neutralize this prayer altar. Did you know there is a Masonic lodge under temple mount? That says something…
Prayer altars need not only be corporate but can be within communities, homes and even individuals. Every place where we regularly pray to and worship YHVH is a prayer altar and regular service of it will create a gateway into the third heaven. Similarly, a gateway is created to the second heaven with ungodly altars. Did you know we can have both godly and ungodly altars in ourselves, our home or area. Any sin for example: using drugs, or excessive use of alcohol, listening to ungodly music, viewing pornography, viewing films with immoral scenes and themes, any occultic activities like yoga, defile our bodily gateways (read hand over to the enemy) and establish an ungodly prayer altar. This gives satan free access into your life and will invite destruction.
Ezekiel 6:9–10
9 “Then those of you who escape will remember Me among the nations to which they will be carried captive, how I have been hurt by their adulterous hearts which turned away from Me, and by their eyes which played the harlot after their idols; and they will loathe themselves in their own sight for the evils which they have committed, for all their abominations. 10 “Then they will know that I am YHVH; I have not said in vain that I would inflict this disaster on them.†’
We cannot experience YHVH’s presence or blessing when we worship satan in this way, even if we claim to be a believer of YHVH. The Israelites often mixed their worship of YHVH with idol worship, and YHVH was never happy with it.
Ezekiel 20:31
31 “When you offer your gifts, when you cause your sons to pass through the fire, you are defiling yourselves with all your idols to this day. And shall I be inquired of by you, O house of Israel? As I live,†declares the YHVH Elohim, “I will not be inquired of by you.
There are but two Kingdoms, that of YHVH and that of satan. We cannot serve two masters.
Colossians 1:13
13 For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son,
Every false religion originates from the kingdom of darkness. They may go by different names, ideologies and doctrines, but their essence is from satan’s kingdom. He caters for every fancy with the aim to possess a soul and destroy it. So, every time we choose to expose ourselves to these and related activities, we service satan’s altar, not YHVH’s.
However, if we devote ourselves to prayer and worship of YHVH, we push back this darkness and open a gateway to receive from YHVH. We have to be consistent and return to our altar regularly in order to strenghten it. By doing this we create a space for YHVH to dwell and connect with us. Servicing our prayer altar, in other words, is working on our relationship with YHVH.
Exodus 20:24
24 ‘You shall make an altar of earth for Me, and you shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen; in every place where I cause My name to be remembered, I will come to you and bless you.
Building and maintaining a prayer altar takes practice and discipline. As we study YHVH’s word, pray to Him and wait on Him, we are transformed due to His presence. We are to remind YHVH and ourselves of His promises by proclaiming His word. We do not remind YHVH of His promises because He is forgetful, but to strengthen our faith.
Isaiah 43:26
26 Remind me, when we argue our case together—state your case, so you may be proved right. (TLV)
Joshua 23:14
14 “Now behold, today I am going the way of all the earth, and you know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one word of all the good words which YHVH your Elohim spoke concerning you has failed; all have been fulfilled for you, not one of them has failed.
Our consistency will ensure divine favour from YHVH, victory in battle, provision, promotion and divine protection. This is not a formula to prosperity, but a consistent purity of heart.
We are in covenant with YHVH through Y’shua our Saviour. This covenant is inactive without an altar of prayer. We cannot claim to have a relationship with somebody and have the benefits of a relationship if we don’t speak to him. It is the same with YHVH, we are to be in a relationship with Him in order to be His children, in active covenant with Him. There are certain terms or conditions of this covenant.
Deuteronomy 7:12–13
12 “And because you listen to these rules and keep and do them, YHVH your Elohim will keep with you the covenant and the steadfast love that he swore to your fathers. 13 He will love you, bless you, and multiply you. He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, your grain and your wine and your oil, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock, in the land that he swore to your fathers to give you. (ESV)
It is important to know that our salvation is from YHVH, through Y’shua, not through our works. So, although YHVH requires obedience from us, our offer on our spiritual altar to YHVH is our lives as a living sacrifice. When we wholly offer ourselves, we will grow deeper in our relationship with YHVH.
Let us summarize: A prayer altar creates a gateway into the heavenlies. A prayer altar can reach into the second or the third heaven. The third heaven (2 Cor 12:2) is the realm where YHVH dwells and the second is where heavenly beings like angels, satan, nephillim, fallen angels, and demons dwell and operate. It is in second heaven that spiritual warfare takes place.
Gateways to the third heaven are formed by godly altars, while gateways to the second heaven are formed by ungodly or satanic altars. Through these gates, spiritual power is “downloaded” to earth.
Second heaven power can cause chaos, destruction, effect curses and cause illness to name a few examples. It can affect or even control every one of the facets of our lives: our finances, government, decisions, safety etc. Satanists are very aware of how this operates and use it to their advantage. Second heaven power can also be used for healing and so-called good, but the source would be demonic.
We as believers, are mostly ignorant of this and fall prey to satan’s schemes of destruction against us. Our ignorance does not make his plans ineffective, on the contrary, it makes us vulnerable to his schemes. The enemy knows how to possess the heavenly gates and so have access to power that can cause calamity and destruction on earth especially over YHVH’s people. Our ignorance gives them free reign as their power is mostly unopposed.
Proverbs 24:7
7 Wisdom is too exalted for a fool, He does not open his mouth in the gate.
This needs to change! We are not to be counted among the fools, but the wise.
In a future article, we will focus more on how we, as believers, can be wise by possessing these spiritual gates.

Taking possession of the gates of one’s enemies
The first time this expression was used was in Genesis 22:17.
I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies
The significance of gate of a city is the place where administrative and judicial gatherings happen, hence some translations’ use of “cities”. The gate of a city represented the point of power as it regulates access to the city. It controls what goes into the city and what comes out of it.
What does it mean to take possession of the gate of the enemy? Taking possession of the gate of the enemy implies exercising control over that city. It implies taking over a colony. It implies having a city, a colony or an empire yielding to the control of a colonizing external force.
The gates to a city, then, represented a point of power, a place to exercise control over that city. A military conqueror would try to get control of the gate in order to enter the city most easily. A king who had the hearts of the elders who sat in the gate would politically control the city. A person who organized and ran the commercial market and storehouses at the gate would control the economic life of the city—and its surrounding villages. At the gate ideas and policies flowed along with the commerce. These ideas could result in the rising or falling of rulers and even nations. And that brings us to the modern day in which we live. In our lives—in our cities, states, nations—it often seems like an enemy of the Kingdom of God has possessed our “gates.” This enemy represents ideals and principals contrary to that of Heaven’s Kingdom. Yet it influences our business life, our cultural life, our social life, our political life—even our church life.

Is it attested in other languages or cultures in the region? This has a deep spiritual essence in the languages or cultures in the religion of the city in question. When an external force assumes control over the city of the enemy they stand a great chance of determining the languages and what the religious culture of the target city will look like. It is worthy of not here to state that the enemies being conquered would simply have no form of influence as to what happens to them afterwards. As Paul puts it in his letter to the Romans.
Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves,[c] you are slaves of the one whom you obey . . . (Romans 6:16 ESV)
Does it presume conflict and victory or has it generalized to simply “be successful”? No! The process cannot be generalized to simply “be successful” because the conquering forces must expect some degree of resistance from the enemies they expect to conquer. Taking the gate of the enemies may begin with conflict. But one thing is certain — the conflict can only end in the defeat of the enemies.
Gate
Gate
The gate is an entryway into an unknown place, or a place of great significance; it is a threshold, and may connect the living and the dead. They are normally guarded by symbolic animals: the LION, DRAGON, BULL, and DOG are often depicted in conjunction with the gate. In many cultures, passing through a gateway signifies a right of passage.
The gate is clearly phallic, and represents feminine passage with the vulva. A gate with two pillars – ANDROGYNE. It can be the function of a door between life and death – gates of Heaven. Justice, mercy, praise and righteousness are also related symbols. Combinations with other words: open gate – hospitality, peace; closed – expulsion (Paradise), inhospitality, misery, war; dark – often an entrance to the Underworld; of the sun – between Cancer and Capricorn, tropics; without gate – suffering.

iBIBLE
Sitting at the Gate
Sitting at the Gate
Welcome to a behind-the-scenes look at the research that goes into making each scene of the iBIBLE. Let’s take a look at the study behind Lot’s role and life in Sodom.
So Lot chose for himself [after Abram gave him first choice] the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company: Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom. Now the men of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord. (Genesis 13:11-13)
When Lot chose the Jordan plain, he likely didn’t know of the wickedness of the city of Sodom or what trouble was ahead of him when he settled there. (Read the iBIBLE Behind The Scenes Email of Abram and Lot parting ways.)
“This fellow came to sojourn, and he has become the judge! Now we will deal worse with you than with them.” (Gen 19:9)
A strange declaration by the inhabitants of Sodom. Was Lot a judge in Sodom, or was this just their way of saying “you think you’re better than us”? This is a question the team asked as we animated iBIBLE chapters 9 and 10.
First, we look for Lot’s position in Sodom. We know that he ended up in Sodom after parting ways with his uncle, Abram. There is no sign of Lot having any position of power in the city, rather, he simply brought his flocks there to graze on the rich pasture land in the Jordan valley. The wickedness of the inhabitants of the land does not appear to phase him in the least.
Then things get interesting. There is a war. A big, involved, nine city war, and Sodom is defeated. As was the tradition of the day, the city was looted, and the inhabitants are taken away to be slaves, including Lot.
Abram had been living, not too far away, in the mountains of Canaan. We last saw Abram as a shepherd, parting ways with Lot and moving his tent to live near the oaks of Mamre. Now we see him as chieftain with at least 318 trained men (those who went with him – some must have remained at camp to keep watch over his family and flocks), they pursue the invaders, rout them and rescue Lot, and, well, the lot.
Then [Abram] brought back all the possessions, and also brought back his kinsman Lot with his possessions, and the women and the people. (Gen 14:16)
Then Abram returns everything, and goes back to his camp.
Once the king of Sodom realizes that there is a guy who lives in his city with an uncle who can step in and save his royal bacon, he probably would want to be on good terms with that man. He might just think of a way to make sure that he is committed to that town. Perhaps offer him a position of authority?
We can’t say for sure what happened between the King of Sodom and Lot, or even the people of the city. We do know where Lot met the angels, and THIS is what tells us that Lot was indeed much more than a visiting shepherd when the angels visit him in Sodom.
The two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. (Gen 19:1)
In ancient times, the gate is where the elders of the city would go to meet, where deals were made (respected witnesses are available), and people would be judged. Here are some other examples from the scripture:
… the manslayer who strikes any person without intent or unknowingly may flee there. They shall be for you a refuge from the avenger of blood. He shall flee to one of these cities and shall stand at the entrance of the gate of the city and explain his case to the elders of that city. Then they shall take him into the city… (Joshua 20:3-4)
In the Book of Ruth, Boaz takes advantage of this custom to ensure the presence of witnesses and elders:
Now Boaz had gone up to the gate and sat down there. And behold, the redeemer, of whom Boaz had spoken, came by. So Boaz said, “Turn aside, friend; sit down here.” And he turned aside and sat down. And he took ten men of the elders of the city and said, “Sit down here.” So they sat down. Then he said to the redeemer, “Naomi, who has come back from the country of Moab, is selling the parcel of land that belonged to our relative Elimelech. So I thought I would tell you of it and say, ‘Buy it in the presence of those sitting here and in the presence of the elders of my people.’ (Ruth 4:1-4)
And again, in how to take a child to court:
…then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city at the gate of the place where he lives, and they shall say to the elders of his city, ‘This our son is stubborn and rebellious; he will not obey our voice’… (Deuteronomy 21:19)
And this is how we came to believe that Lot, who followed Abram into the promised land and parted ways with him, likely became a judge for the city of Sodom.
Whether or not Lot was a judge, the drama that plays out in his life, and the interaction with his uncle Abram, is significant. God shows mercy on Lot, over and over, even though his life doesn’t always reflect the faithfulness of Abram.
Possess the Gates of Your Enemy
In Genesis 24:60, Bethuel and Laban send Rebekah away with this blessing:
And they blessed Rebekah and said to her, “Our sister, may you become thousands of ten thousands, and may your offspring possess the gate of those who hate them!”
Genesis 24:60
We all know from Hollywood that the city gates are the key to capturing an enemy city. If you can break through the gates, you’ve all but one the battle.
We know from the rest of the story that Bethuel and Laban were much more concerned with what they could get out of other people than what they could give, so it’s the kind of blessing we might expect from them. “May you take everything from anyone who tries to take from you!”
However, the Angel of YHVH blessed Abraham’s offspring in the same manner:
And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven and said, “By myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies, and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.”
Genesis 22:15-18
Did God mean to bless Abraham’s son with military victory over all his enemies? To an extent, yes, but the Bible uses the idea of gates in a much broader sense than this.
Gates are, by definition, the primary point of entry to any city or home, but they are also the focus of trade, public discourse, and justice. The elders of a town meet at the gates to hear complaints and try criminal cases. God wants his Law written on the gates of our cities and homes, not just to remind us whenever we pass through them, but to signal that all true justice aligns with his standards, not ours.
Lot sat in the gate of Sodom. (Genesis 19:1)
Abraham transacted business at the gate of the city of Ephron so that there would be public witnesses. (Genesis 23:18)
Shechem and Hamor called the men of their city to the gates to discuss a proposed treaty with the Hebrews. (Genesis 34:20)
Trials, executions, and civil disputes to take place in public at the city gates. (Deuteronomy 21:19, 25:7, Joshua 20:4)
Kings held court at the city gates. (2 Samuel 19:8, 2 Chronicles 32:6)
Religious rituals and celebrations took place at the city gates. (2 Kings 23:8, Acts 14:13)
Public and private charity was dispensed at the gates. (Luke 7:12, Acts 3:2)
If you sit in the gates of a city, it means that you are a respected elder and judge. People bring their disagreements and accusations for you to hear, and they expect you to tell them what to do. You are the arbiter of public morality.
For the people of God to possess the gates of their enemies doesn’t necessarily mean to defeat them in battle. It can also mean to have a defining influence over justice, trade, diplomacy, and the mechanisms of government.
We aren’t called to overthrow earthly governments or conquer nations in order to convert them forcibly to Christianity. We are, however, called to exemplify and teach God’s ways to our communities. Wherever we live, we have an obligation to promote God’s standards of justice: Equal weights and measures. Judicial impartiality. Due process, including the right to defend oneself and refute all evidence and witnesses. The sanctity of marriage. The defense of the helpless. Generosity to the poor and landless.
For a variety of reasons, we in the United States are utter failures in that calling, and I hear people offering two mutually exclusive solutions: Rise up in arms and take the country back by force or else retreat to mountain camps to wait for God to rescue us.
But I don’t believe that either of these are real solutions.
I tell you that you are Petros, and on this Petra I will build my ekklesia, and the gates of hell will not overpower them.
Matthew 16:19
Most of us live within the gates of Hell even now. Our courts, centers of trade, and seats of government are occupied and controlled by wicked people who have made themselves to be God’s enemies and therefore ours as well.
Yeshua told Peter that the gates of hell would not prevail against his assembled people (ekklesia). Clearly he didn’t mean that we are literally to storm the gates of Hell, and divinely ordained armed insurrection is very rare in the Bible, despite the many wicked tyrants described on its pages.
Likewise, Christian isolationism, in which we hide from the world in our homes and simply pray for better times, isn’t an option for God’s people. We have been commanded to preach the Gospel of the Kingdom of Heaven and to be a light to all peoples, teaching the way of salvation and obedience to God’s instructions.
The Great Commission doesn’t end with witnessing to strangers on the street or coworkers in the office. It extends to city hall, the governor’s mansion, and Capitol Hill in Washington. It extends to Wall Street and Silicon Valley as well, because all of these are the city gates, and almost all of them are now in the possession of our enemies.
If you love God, you will promote his worship and his kingdom, and if you love your neighbor, you will promote justice at the city gates. As the people of God and subjects of the Kingdom of Heaven, we have an obligation to cultivate influence in the city gates here on earth through righteous means, not just for our own benefit, but for the benefit of all the people who live within the domain of those gates.
POSSESSING THE GATES OF THE ENEMY – RCCG Winners Harvest Maidstone
… and thy seed shall possess the gates of his enemies;” (Genesis 22:17b KJV)
In this season on laughter, one of the vital factors that will guide the victory of God’s children is the understanding we have about God’s power within us in the face of challenges. In Daniel 11:32b, the bible speaks about a category of people who do know their God, and as a consequence are able to do exploits. The knowledge we have about God and his ways is a precursor to our ability to do exploits. It is not the meagre revelation we generate in our few minutes bible study that will guarantee a mountain-moving exploit.
The challenge facing us as Christians today is developing that spiritual might that we need to possess our possession—to go up unto the mountains and conquer the Anaks, that may seem like giants in our eyes but in reality are challenges awaiting the destructive effect of God’s power that we carry within us. To be able to do this, we have to learn a few things from the interactions of our father Abraham with God.
In the text of this exhortation, God called Abraham and declared to him that he will bless him and make him a blessing. Above all, the extent of his influence will not be limited to the vicinity of where he lives but to furthest shores. He was called to be hugely relevant in his generation and to affect the order of things because he carried God’s spirit in him and was approved of God. Finally, God commanded him to possess the gates of his enemies.
The last part of the promise is extremely significant even as we go ahead to seek total victory over every manifestations of the powers of hell. What does it mean to possess the gates of ones enemies? Is that a reality in our days? What steps do we need to take to be able to do that? Possessing the gates of ones enemies demands that we shall be in charge of the stronghold of the enemy. That means, we will have to determine how far the conquest of the enemy over our lives goes. We have to be the one making the decisions always and denying the enemy any foothold over us.
The statement implies that the very things the enemies use against us will become impotent over us because we have taken over control and will begin to use the armouries of the enemy to target and pull him and his agents down. This was a vitally important promise of God and it is the foundation for total liberty in our lives. We will grow to see that the devil is not able to harm us because we have taken over control by the grace and favour of God in our lives. David also understood this and so lived a life founded on the knowledge that his God is greatest and able to help him. Little wonder in the end, he was victorious in all his battles. Praise God.

POSSESSING THE GATES OF YOUR ENEMIES
A gate is a means of entrance or exit. Cities, neighborhoods, homes require gates or doors to facilitate entrance and exit.
Everything has a gate. Cities have gates. There are airports and seaports in cities. The human body has gates-your nostrils, mouth, eyes, and ears. Gates are important for the survival and prosperity of cities, and individuals.
Gates are also spiritual entry and exit points where blessings are delivered or hindered. A gate controls the job you are praying for. The baby you are asking for has a gate in control of it.
Psalm 24: 7-10:
“Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory”
Gates have heads…LIFT UP YOUR HEADS.
Gates have ears, that’s why they can hear the instructions to lift up their heads.
Gates have eyes, that’s why they can see that that the king of glory was about coming in.
Gates maintain respect for authorities, that’s why it was told that the king of glory was about entering.
Gates are points of authority; to be in control of the gate, is to have authority over the city, considering that cities were fenced.
Dominance is established in gates. God spoke to Joshua and assured him of the promise of dominance and control over his environment.
Joshua 1:3 Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses.
There are two specific instances in the bible where God commanded his people to take control of the gates of their enemies:
Gen 22: 17
“That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore, and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies”
Genesis 24:60
And they blessed Rebekah, and said to her, You are our sister, be you the mother of thousands of millions, and let your seed possess the gate of those which hate them.
In both of these promises specifically to Abraham and the latter to Rebekah, the promise is made to their seeds to possess the gates of their enemies.
We are not descendants of Abraham or Rebekah by birth, but we are spiritual seeds of Abraham and Rebekah.
Gal 3:29
“And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” (NKJV)
Our position in Jesus Christ, equally grants us the right and position of being the seed and heirs of Abraham. With this, we are able, to access the promises made to Abraham and his daughter-in-law Rebekah.
You are called to possess the gates of your enemies. The word POSSESS means to have as your belonging, to exercise authority, control and to claim a thing.
Gates are places where decisions are made concerning your life. You have to possess the gates where evil policies and decisions are made over your life. When you possess the gates of your enemies, you make decision over them, you end their attacks and evil plans against you and you regain your destiny and breakthrough.
While you are in control of the gates of your enemies, you get to do two important things:
Isaiah 28:6
He will be a spirit of justice to the one who sits in judgment, a source of strength to those who turn back the battle at the gate.
The Lord promised to be a spirit of justice to you, an ability and a source of justice, when you decide to sit in judgment. You can’t sit in judgment until you take control of a gate. Possessing the enemy’s gate enables you bring judgment on them for their wickedness.
Possessing the gate of the enemy, enables you bring the battle to their gates, and to pressure them into defeat and surrender. The Lord promises to be a source of strength to you in battle at the gates.
May you advance boldly and possess the gates of your enemies.
Possessing the gate of your enemies — Calvary Assembly Church
Gen 22:17 That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;
Jericho was in the way of Israel reaching The Promised Land, a feared city that was not easy to be conquered. What needed to be done was not possible by Israel but God true to His promise to Abraham about possessing the gate of Israel’s enemies, gave them the strategy. They were to follow God’s instructions to the letter which would give them the victory.
It is noteworthy to understand that the same blessings of Abraham are upon the Church through Jesus our Lord because we are of the seed of Abraham. We too (The Church) will be multiplied like the sand of the sea and possess the gate of our enemies as promised to Abraham. However, what we need more than anything today is the knowledge of God’s warfare plans and the ability to submit to it. I want to tell you that possessing the gate of your enemies needs implicit obedience to God’s instructions even if it does not make sense. The Jericho instruction by God was to walk around the city six days once a day with the ark of the covenant whilst blowing the ram’s horns seven times. Then on the seventh day, they were to go around the city seven times with the ark blowing the trumpets and on the final blast of the trumpet all the people should give a loud shout which would cause the walls to fall down. Hmmmmm! Strange warfare instructions to take a might city that was basically impregnable.
If there are lessons, I have learned about warfare, it is, never question the instructions of the Lord. The second thing is, always obey to the letter. If you fail to do it, you will suffer the consequences of failure and defeat. Joshua won against Jericho because he obeyed to the letter but failed to impress upon the people the same discipline. Therefore, one of them did what God said not to do and that was not to take anything from Jericho. As a result of this disobedience by one man, Israel was cursed. Soon after they lost a war with Ai which they should have won easily. This was God’s judgement on them.
Warfare is not a joke as some people take it. It is serious business and will cost lives if not fought properly. Now, Jericho was in the way of the Promised Land and in order to crossover and not have enemies coming after them whilst they prepared to crossover, they had to destroy their enemies. In other words, the needed to possess the gates of their enemies.
Gates speak of an entry and an exit. All our senses are gates. Without protected gates, one is open to the enemies of the land. Gates also speak of borders. A country defends its borders because they too are gates. Likewise, if one is to possess the gate of their enemies, they must possess the borders as well and not just one single entry point. (That to us is the possessing of all our faculties associated with the body, mind and spirit.) Once a nation is conquered it is incumbent on the conquering nation to then possess the land they have just conquered. (We must bring in self control to possess our body, soul and spirit.) This required them to kill all their enemies in the conquered land. Likewise, if you don’t, you cannot possess yourself effectively. Many have made this mistake and failed in warfare.
It is the possessing of one’s self (self control) through the word of God and His Spirit that brings possession of the land that you are in. Your space is then governed by you and you must possess the gate of your enemies.
Speaking of modern-day warfare, the battle rages on several fronts. One front is keeping what God has given to us as the church. Many Christians have lost ground even though they are the children of God. They have been defeated often by the devil and are unable to appropriate nor keep what God has given them. This is unfortunately the sad state of many Christians. When we as Ministers of God keep casting out demons from Christians, we know that this is the case. The plateau for victory is having the overcoming kind of faith. Winning one war and losing another is not living a victorious life. All you are doing is going from one victory to another or one loss to another. Becoming more than a conqueror helps but it still does not deny access by the devil. It is an overcoming spirit that is the key to staying in that vein all the time. Wars will come and go but you will not be affected by them because you are an overcomer. This is what Jesus was telling the churches in the book of Revelation, to become overcomers or lose out on what Jesus had for them.
In these last days, we must awaken to righteousness and holiness. These are key overcoming aspects of warfare. The rigours of warfare are overcome based on having righteousness working in a person who is holy. Jesus was the King of righteousness therefore, He carried with Him a sceptre that could not be removed. That sceptre anointed Him above everyone else and He was always welcome in the presence of the Father. That is why He never failed on earth. The other part of warfare is Peace. One must always be at peace about life and the future. Peace is at a premium on earth today. The God of peace is actually the God of war. Rom 16:20 And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen. We glean from this verse that God is a God of peace and so He brings war to bear upon His enemies in order to bring peace. It was God that initiated the battle between Pharaoh and Moses. This is noteworthy. When you are in battle, you must call upon the name of the Lord who will deliver you from all your enemies. It is through Him that we possess the gates of our enemies.
I can tell you personal stories of battles with evil spirits and the like that will make you hair stand up on its end. The battles were of the kind that threatened everything in my life including job, marriage, church, ministry, finances, health and relationships. They never ceased to give me rest even one day in my life till I discovered Peace. Once that came into my life, I was able to battle like never before. Added to this, I wore the whole armour of God, took my eyes of myself and people and began to focus on the spirit realm of darkness. I studied the word and practised it as much as possible till I became good at warfare. In all of this, I knew not to depend on myself or love something or someone so much that I could not give it up. Abraham received these blessings only when he was ready to sacrifice Isaac his only begotten son. Likewise, God won the battle for us by sacrificing His only begotten Son. He was showing us the true nature of warfare. Too many of us have developed a love for someone on earth or something which has taken away our ability to sacrifice. The true essence and power of warfare is sacrifice. Be prepared to do what God tells you no matter the cost. The statement, OBEDIENCE IS BETTER THAN SACRIFICE means that obedience is the true sacrifice not what you or I want to offer God in our wisdom. Jesus won because of obedience. Many go about trying to win battles in their own wisdom when they should be leaning on God’s understanding of how to win the battle.
The battle instructions may seem crazy but that is why obedience is required. Joshua found that out the hard way. So did many others in the Bible. The devil knows we are a rebellious people with hard hearts and that is why he can easily defeat us by our disobedience. The devil captured all of mankind (think about it) through disobedience when he tempted Eve. It took the humility and obedience of Jesus to save us. The battle still rages after the cross. We must learn to do warfare God’s way. Open your eyes.

Possessing the Gates of Your Enemies
By Administrator in Bulletin
…blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. Gen. 22:17 (NKJV)
And they blessed Rebekah and said to her: ” Our sister, may you become The mother of thousands of ten thousands; And may your descendants possess The gates of those who hate them.” Gen. 24:60 (NKJV)
God spoke to Abraham at the point of offering Isaac and said “because of what you have shown, I will make your descendants possess the gates of their enemies”.
At the release of Rebekah as Isaac’s wife, her people spoke these words too.
A gate is an entry or exit point. It is a control point where you allow in or out of a place. It’s a point of access, a place where decisions are made.
A gate is therefore a very key place, more so in our lives. He who mans the gate is the AUTHORITY holder.
Possessing the gates of our enemies is a spiritual “coup d’état”, a military term meaning to overthrow. John 10:10, Mathew 11:12
It involves reclaiming what was originally ours. It is an undertaking that requires made up mind with a clear focus without wavering.
Few Facts About Possessing:
Possessing The Gates Of Our Enemy
Possessing the Gates of our Enemy
Sunday, February 11, 2018
By Rev. James May
Genesis 22:17 That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;
Genesis 22:18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.
Gates in scripture are often symbols of authority. The king had a throne at the gates. The elders sat at the gates. Judgments were passed and sentences carried out. To possess the gates of the enemy, or Satan, is to displace Satan’s authority with that which is entrusted to us by Jesus Christ.
Jesus said in Luke 10:19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. In reading this verse we see that there can be a dual meaning to the word power!
Is Jesus saying that we will have the ability through spiritual strength to tread on all of the spiritual strength of the devil?
Is He also saying that we have authority, through Jesus’ name, to defeat the devil? In both cases, I would have to say, Yes!
But there is a difference between power and authority in both the natural and the spiritual.
Let’s look at the relationship between ‘authority’ and ‘power,’ as they are used in Jesus promise.
The Greek word that is translated as ‘authority,’ is ‘exousia,’ and its basic meaning is to have the right to rule or govern as one whose will and commands must be submitted to and obeyed. The second Greek word that is often translated is ‘dunamis’ and it is translated as ‘power’. It means to have an inherent strength, power, or ability to bring about a desired purpose.
To illustrate the relationship between the two words, we will use the example of a truck and a traffic officer. A truck has inherent power, and so the driver has ‘dunamis’ power at his disposal to accomplish his work.
A police officer has very little power to stop the transport, but he has ‘exusia’ authority. When he holds up his hand the driver stops the power of the truck because behind the officer’s authority is the whole weight of the Police Department, and if necessary, the resources of the entire law enforcement power of the nation.
As Christians, we have “exusia”, or authority to command demons and all the powers of the devil – but that authority is not of ourselves, it is through the power, or the “dunamis”, of the name of Jesus Christ, who is above every name. That’s why we pray every prayer by invoking the name of Jesus. In invoking that name, in the spiritual realm, we release through faith the full power of God to move heaven and earth to accomplish God’s will in the answering of the prayer we have put before him.
In that name of Jesus there is healing – the “dunamis”, that omnipotent power of the Holy Spirit is released to bring the healing power of God to bear upon that which we have taken “exusia”, or spiritual authority over through the promises of God’s word that cannot fail.
The Word of God says in James 5:14 & 15, “Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.”
How does that work? How can lowly human beings with a little bit of oil in their hands, take that oil and apply it to someone who is sick, say a few words in prayer, and then watch the sick be healed and even their sins forgiven?
Where does that power, that “exusia”, and that “dunamis” come from? It certainly isn’t within me, or any other man or woman, as we stand there!
It comes from the omnipotent power, or “dunamis” of Holy Spirit as He comes because we have used our God-given “exusia”, or “authority”, through the name of Jesus. And we know according to God’s word that Jesus has all power and authority in both Heaven and in the earth.
That “dunamis”, the power to perform the work asked for in prayer; and we assume the “exusia”, or authority to call forth the omnipotent power of God, and the fulfillment of his promises of healing power through his blood. That authority to call upon God is bestowed upon us through Holy Spirit, and the power to do the work is transferred to us through faith in believing in the Lord Jesus Christ and his ability to answer the prayer we pray!
