Everything You Need To Know About Smoke Bomb Photography
The Most Popular Smoke Bombs for Photography
Enola Gaye is one of the most popular and highly-rated brands. These smoke bombs were originally designed for paintball and airsoft games as a way of blocking the oppositionโs visibility. But they have also become a favorite among photographers due to their high quality, ease of use, long burn duration, and the range of colors available.
These smoke bombs feature a wire-pull ignition system, which means thereโs no need for a lighter. They last for about 60 to 90 seconds before burning out.
The Enola Gaye website offers some helpful info on the differences between each of its smoke bomb colors in terms of quantity of smoke, output speed, and smoke density. For instance, the companyโs yellow smoke bomb is listed as having 16 percent more smoke density than its red smoke bomb.
Enola Gaye wire-pull smoke grenades usually sell for around $7 to $9 apiece, but you can often find them on sale, too.
How to safely use smoke bombs in portraits
Aaron and Whitney DuRall are a husband and wife photography team based out of New York City who specializes in shooting engagements and weddings. Occasionally they will add the power of smoke to their awesome portraits. Read on to find out more about how to safely execute your own smoke bomb portrait.
We get asked a lot about our smoke bomb photos. The two big questions always seem to be, โHow do you guys go about using them in shoots?โ and โWhere do you guys get your smoke bombs from?โ
A smoke bomb can add a level of mysterious beauty to a portrait shoot. Aaron and Whitney DuRall
Why would anyone want to use smoke bombs in a shoot?
Simply put, itโs pretty dang cool. They provide a fun and unique aesthetic that can add life to any session. Whether itโs with a couple, a model, a band, whatever, the addition of colorful plumes and the subsequent haze they leave can give any shoot an extra kick of interest. However, people should understand that using smoke bombs can potentially pose a few risks. It is paramount that these risks are openly discussed and understood by all parties involved before using them in a shoot. This is especially true if one intends to hold them in their hands. Use our guide to help get you started.

Items needed for a smoke bomb photoshoot:
Smoke bomb
Lighter (if not using a โcool burning wire pullโ grenades)
Open outdoors space, away from anything that is overly dry and susceptible to catching fire
Camera
Water (to pour on the smoke bomb after it has burnt out to ensure safe disposal)
Model(s)

Safety concerns while using smoke bombs in your photoshoot:
Although smoke bombs can provide an interesting pop of color to a portrait itโs important to proceed with caution. The primary concerns when shooting with smoke bombs are explosions, burns, stains, fire, and inhalation/smell. More of each of these below.
Explosions We recommend everyone use cool burning smoke bombs, but due to these risks, but we also understand they are not always available. While it is unlikely that a smoke bomb will explode, it can happen. This is possible when too much moister gets inside the tube, thus clogging the pathway for the smokeโs expulsion. When this happens, it can cause a smoke bomb to combust. There is a way to tell if your smoke bomb could potentially have this issue. If it fails to emit plumes shortly after the fuse has burnt, this could indicate that there is a clogging issue relating to moisture inside the cylinder. In the event this happens, move away from the smoke bomb and allow it to burn itself out.

Burns: unless youโre using a cool burning smoke bomb, they will get hot. It is advised not to hold them and one understands they do so at their own risk. If you choose to hold them, place your hand as low to the base as possible. They burn top to bottom and the base will be the coolest spot.

Stains: If youโre using colorful smoke, just know that if the smoke is directly and closely emitted to clothing, it can leave a stain. You may want to ask your subjects to wear dark colors just in case.
Fire: Once a smoke bomb has burnt out, dispose of it responsibly and carefully. This is why we recommend carrying water bottles with you when using them. Do not use smoke bombs in overly dry fields, forests, or buildings with a lot of flammable components. Once the bomb has burnt out, immediately dump water into the tube. This will make the bomb safe to dispose of.

Inhalation/Smell: The smoke is often very thick and can irritate the eyes and throat of some people. I personally have no issue with this, however, they tend to aggravate Whitโs throat if she manages to inhale some of the smoke as it flows around her. The smell of the smoke can also stay in your hair and clothes.
Always use a smoke bomb in an open air location without dry grass. Aaron and Whitney DuRall
How to create a smoke bomb portrait:
When we use smoke bombs, we use them for the color they provide. We love the haze that surrounds our subjects and the billowing plumes. There will be days that itโs advised not to use them. Like briefly mentioned above, itโs always important to use these away from anything thatโs overly flammable, or anything that is too dry. So weโd recommend not using them during the dry months of summer if you arenโt immediately near water. It only takes a single spark to cause a big fire, so please keep that in mind. Wind is the enemy with smoke bombs always. If itโs an incredibly windy day, pack them up, and save them for later. They will prove mostly useless since the wind will quickly disperse any plumes and/or haze.
Avoid windy days if you want to try shooting with a smoke bomb. Aaron and Whitney DuRall
Smoke bombs can really work in a variety of situations when it comes to shoots. There are no rules. We actually travel with a bunch in the trunk of our car on any given day. We do this because we never know when we may want to hop out of the car, and pop off a few frames using them. We also never know when we may want to incorporate them into an engagement session, a wedding day, or even a lifestyle session and more. Whether having a subject stay still as we run circles around them, engulfing them in smoke, or whether they run around holding the bomb themselves, like I said, there are no rules.

Where to buy smoke bombs for a photo shoot
Now, people always ask where do we get our smoke bombs? Well, it depends. We love Enola Gaye Smoke Grenades because, again, they are cool burning with a wire pull system. They are pricey, but well worth it. Availability also depends on where in the United States that you live. When we were living in the Missouri, it was very easy for us to get them, as there were fireworks warehouses all over the state. From Black Cat markets, to Pyro City, to Fireworks Supermarket and more, there are places all over to buy smoke bombs. However, one should know that most often, they will not find cool burning smoke bombs at these places. They do occasionally have them, but not all of the time. This is where the risks stated above need to be given thorough attention and consideration since they will be fused and hot burning.

When Can You Use Smoke Bombs?
We bring the colour to your photoshoot, we make film and TV come alive, we bring a visual effects to your festival like no other and we make it so easy you will wonder why you havenโt tried Enola Gaye products before. We donโt expect everyone to be pyrotechnic experts so we have designed our products to be super easy to use and safe to everyone in the proximity.
We understand that you have a bunch of questions and we are here to clear the air and enable you to get on with what youโre good at.
For a more detailed risk assessment check our guide to Risk Assessments for Pyrotechnic Products here.
We will start with the most common questionโฆ
Can Enola Gaye smokes be held in the hand?
Once ignited you should place the smoke on the ground away from any combustible materials.
Pulling the ring ignites the product, smoke will start to emit from the top of the product. Sparks can be emitted, also throughout the function of the product hot ash may be emitted, this is uncommon but should be accounted for.
The device does start to warm up through the function of the product. Internally you have a small amount of composition that is burning; during its function the product will become warm.
Can you breathe the smoke?
Enola Gaye smokes are designed to be used in close proximity to people but you cannot breathe the smoke and applies to all types of smoke. You can be in the smoke, but with any smoke it can cause breathing difficulties, especially if people are asthmatic.
The coloured smoke produced is not known to be toxic, so it is not poisonous and you can be in and around the smoke, but where possible avoid breathing the smoke.
Enola Gaye is the leading designer of coloured smoke for all types of industries especially within the leisure industry and film and photographic world. If you are using coloured smoke around people make sure it is our products. We design our products right down to the last air particle so you can be assured that our coloured smoke is non-toxic and non-carcinogenic; we cannot advise on other brands of smoke.
Does the smoke stain clothing?
Yes it can stain if held close to the material. We would not advise using our smoke products close enough to stain material as this would also create a fire risk. From our tests materials within 2 meters of the nozzle of the smoke may become stained from the smoke dye.
Particle Staining: If you fill the air with enough coloured smoke you will start to see a coloured dust settling in the near area to the functioned device, usually only when functioned inside or where many products have been used. This will usually not stain property, but on fine materials that are white or very light in colour (like a wedding dress), this may become visual. We do not offer any indemnity against this.
Does the smoke stain property?
After one of our smoke devices has functioned there will be a staining on the floor where the smoke has exited the tube. This staining will wash off over time, the dyes that we use in our smoke products are water based. We do not offer guarantees that surfaces will not be permanently stained, there is always a risk of staining surfaces.
Also see particle staining above.
Where can we use the smoke without getting in trouble?
Realistically if you have sought permission you can use them anywhere, our smoke products are not illegal for the general public to use. HOWEVER always respect the environment that you intent to use them. Do not use them indoors, unless it is well ventilated and EVERYONE in the building is aware that the product is going too used. It is easy to create panic and you will then be on the wrong side of the law. Use the bullet points below to assess if you can use them in your chosen location.
โข Make sure it is well ventilated
โข If it is in a public area, seek permission
โข Never use smoke products around animals unless it is a well-managed project
โข Always be aware of smoke drift; lots of smoke drifting across roads can create accidents
โข Never in sports stadiums, unless approved by the venue
Should we inform the local fire service or police when using EG smoke products?
Depending on how much you are going to use, you should consider informing local authorities of your intentions. Safety data sheets are available upon request from Enola Gaye; local councils often require these for events where many products are being used, but this is usually unnecessary paperwork. If you need further info, check our full risk assessment here.
Use common sense, people panic easily and if you are using our white or black smoke it is easy to alarm people. Coloured smoke is usually just seen as coloured smoke.
Can we take pyrotechnics on planes?
NO NEVER, you will end up in a small room rather than on your desired flight. Pyrotechnics are easily picked up in x-rays scans and by sniffer dogs, do not even try to take pyrotechnic products on planes. If you have been using pyrotechnic products and are about to board a plane, we suggest you shower thoroughly and change your clothing as the smell may be picked up in security checks.
How do we transport pyrotechnics and smoke bombs?
Always transport our products in the UN marked box that they have been delivered to you in. Keep the box sealed until you need to use the products. You can read more on this and how to store the product here.
If you have purchased several products loose, keep them in a dry secure place away from sources of ignition.
We have a shoot abroad, whatโs the best way to get the products there?
We have shops, dealers and distributors across Europe, Canada and the USA so you can usually have them delivered to your location. We do not suggest that you travel abroad with our pyrotechnics. Search our brand name on the internet โEnola Gayeโ or โWire Pull Smokeโ for local dealers.
So hopefully this has answered your questions about what, when, how can we use smoke bombs?

Saturday delivery โ Saturday / Sunday (weekend) delivery is not currently guaranteed or widely available through our usual network of couriers. Some deliveries may well arrive on Saturdays, but this is at the discretion of the courier, and as such when ordering on a Friday for Next Working Day we do not guarantee it will arrive on the Saturday, we / the couriers guarantee it will arrive the next โWorking Dayโ i.e. Monday.
Working days
This term is widely used in delivery information as it refers to Monday through to Friday as being โworking daysโ, and weekends are not classed as such. We use around half a dozen different couriers at any one time to give the best, cheapest and quickest delivery to your area across a wide variety of packages, which includes Small and Large Letters, Small and Medium Parcels and also Large Parcels. To have the flexibility to meet these demands we use the following services:
Royal Mail 24hr and 48hr
Despatch Bay 24hr and 48hr
Parcel2Go, which includes myHermes 2 to 3 Day and also 1 to 2 Day
TNT Next Day
UPS Next Day Drop Off
Tuffnells for Next Day Parcels on certain hazardous goods.
All of these firms use slightly different terms, but as a general rule collections are made on โWorking Daysโ i.e. Monday to Friday, and deliveries are always done on Monday to Friday, and with Despatch Bay and Royal Mail delivering on Saturdays i.e. 6 days a week for just the delivery side of the Network.
As an example an order placed on a Wednesday at 8am in the morning will be despatched that same day, using the couriers โNext Working Dayโ service and will therefore arrive on the Thursday the day after. However, an order placed on the Wednesday at 2pm, will be shipped on the Thursday using the couriers โNext Working Dayโ service and arrive on the Friday. The reason for this is that the couriers have collection times of between 1pm and 5pm, so we cannot guarantee that after 12 noon we can pick, pack and ship your item that very same day due to the couriers various collection times.
If you are in significant need of a โNext Dayโ delivery we do suggest that you call or email us before placing your order so we can advise you and can avoid any unnecessary disappointment.
We have increasingly found that over recent years many customers can place an order at 8pm at night and expect to be able to receive it the following morning, which weโre unable to do because of the nature of how couriers work, and also because our business is open from 9am to 5pm each day and we do not operate a night shift for packing orders.
Disclaimer: We always endeavour to do our absolute best to pick, pack and ship out your order as quickly as possible. However we do ask customers to understand that we purchase the Delivery Service on your behalf from all of the above mentioned couriers, and as such we entrust them to carry out the final leg of the journey to you. We know that statistically around 98% of orders with courier deliveries are done on time and in accordance with the service that we buy from them. However, that does mean that around 2% do not, this is often for a variety of reasons, but not least because the courier firms are enormous operations that handle tens or hundreds of thousands of packages each and every day, if not millions, and so inevitably parcels may go missing or take longer to deliver than anticipated.
We kindly ask that customers take this into consideration, and do not complain harshly or abuse our staff in the unlikely, but perfectly possible event that your parcel does not arrive in time. We always want happy customers, and we work extremely hard behind the scenes to pull your order together and get it out to you very quickly.
