The Heart of the Burden Bearer
When I think of burdens, and burden bearing, many images come to mind.
Perhaps this video clip is an image you have:
It is no secret that life can bring more than a fair share of heaviness. These things weigh on a soul and easily become more than one can bear alone.
These burdens originate from so many places – but the original burdens came when sin entered the world. (Genesis 3:16-19). Today, we grapple with anxiety, sorrow, responsibility, wounds, grief and more. It’s a lot… a lot… to see those we love struggle with these heavy loads.
Yet God, because of His matchless grace and mercy, promises relief. He does not expect us to carry these things alone.
Matthew 11:28-30 – Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” 1 Peter 5:7 – Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
And then there is this truth – God encourages us to help each other.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 says “Two are better than one…..If either of them falls down, one can help the other up….Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves…”.
Galatians 6:2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
But what exactly does it mean to bear another’s burdens?
Galatians 6:2 says Bear, Take up or Carry. In the Greek – βαστάζετε, (bastazete) is a present, active imperative verb. Burdens, βάρη (barē) signifying something heavy and weighted.
The Expositor’s Greek Testament says “Here it signifies lending a hand to help by lifting heavy loads. This does not involve transference of the burden, for it is said in 2 Corinthians 8:13, I mean not that other men be eased and ye burdened: and in Galatians 6:5 it is added that each will have his own pack to bear, but Christian love must ever be careful to relieve each in turn when overtaxed by crushing loads.”
How then do we effectively carry another’s burdens?
“Every act of compassion and self-sacrifice on behalf of another
displays the love of Christ” John MacArthur
Galatians sets a pattern we can follow
We begin with faith – Galatians 3:5 “So again I ask, does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you by the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard?”
– Galatians 3:5 “So again I ask, does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you by the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard?” And this call to faith leads us to the Spirit of Christ – Galatians 4:4-6 “ But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba , Father.”
– Galatians 4:4-6 “ The Spirit brings the fruit of love – Galatians 5:22″ But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”
– Galatians 5:22″ And the Fruit of Love fulfills the law of Christ – Galatians 6:2 “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
When we feel a burden for another, it is God giving us a glimpse of what is on His heart, and His inviting us to step into that space to become involved in what He wants to do.
Being sensitive to the Holy Spirit, we listen, we pray and we help others see God’s hand at work.
There is a scene in the movie Wild, where the main character arrives exhausted at a camp. There, an older, more experienced hiker helps her analyze all that she is carrying. And piece by piece, she recognizes whether it is worth the weight on her back. He doesn’t demand, he doesn’t shame. He just walks her through each item and lets her look at it from a different perspective.
The Command vs. The Gift
While we are all called to bear one another’s burdens, there are some who are specially equipped for bearing burdens. Hearts are sensitive and empathy is high. Burden bearers feel the pain of others as if it was part of their own pain. For those who are gifted to be burden bearers, it is especially important that the practice of burden bearing be done in a wise manner.
Burden bearing is a part of intercessory prayer, and it definitely is the place to begin in bearing another’s burden. We carry the burden to the cross. God prompts our hearts and shows us how to pray. It is His work.
It is a lightening of the load, not a complete removal of it. We help our friends carry their load to the cross, and we let God do the work. Galatians 6:5
Aimee Beau at www.aimeeimbeau.com has listed 6 Critical Tips for Healthy Burden Bearing.
Acknowledge that it is, in fact, burden bearing. Heaviness, sadness for no personal reason, may be God’s calling for us to bear another’s burden Pray. Ask God for clarification if needed, and for direction on how to pray. Our immediate response when feeling the weight of a burden is to go to God in prayer and lift the individual or family to the Lord Bring the Burden to Jesus – we are to help others carry, not assume the load ourselves. Jesus ultimately is the One who carries all of our burdens. We trade our heavy load for His yoke, which is light. We Can’t Rescue – By acting on a desire to rescue, we may be enabling another to persist in behaviors that are inappropriate or unhealthy. Pray Without Ceasing – if the burden returns after we have given it over to God, He may be calling us to continue to pray. Remember: Only God Can Heal – it is not our job to try and fix the person we are carrying the burden for. He can change the heart and bring His healing touch to the broken.
Galatians 6:2. Be a Burden-Bearer
by Julia Bruce
We all carry burdens. Some of them are in a laundry basket. Some of them are emotional burdens and carried inside. Some of them are at the office, and some of them at in our checkbooks. Some are light and some weight us down until we feel like they are crushing us. Burdens come in all shapes, sizes, and weights.God wants us to come alongside of others and help them carry their burdens. When we do, it fulfills the law of Christ, which is to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. (click to tweet) It is through our loving actions that we demonstrate love for our neighbor when they have a burden. So be a burden-barer. Maybe it’s as simple taking a full laundry basket upstairs for your wife or maybe it much harder like helping someone get through bad news at the doctor’s office or being there when a loved one passes away. God doesn’t want any of us to bear our burdens alone. So reach out to others when you see they have a burden and help them carry the load. Sometimes, all you do is pray with them and remind them they can cast all their cares on Jesus because He cares for them. If God placed someone in your path that is carrying a heavy burden, then He placed them there for you to help them carry the burden. Be a burden-barer. (click to tweet)

Mercy & The Principle of Fulfillment
The overview of this redemptive gift continues in Mercy & The Principle of Fulfillment – Describing the Gift.
Mercy’s Birthright*
“To release the holiness of God
into their environment.
To come into the presence of God and worship God in all of life.”
Describing the Gift
The redemptive gift of Mercy feels life and does not just do life. Let’s consider what that means, how it looks, and to and with whom.
The Principle of Fulfillment – What
What: Mercy has a language of its own that flows from its design chiefly to be, not to do. This is not about being a workaholic versus being lazy. It has everything to do with how Mercy presences their surroundings. The Mercy thinks, processes, and feels differently than others – core to their God-given design and purpose. The redemptive impact of that realization can be a catalyst for Mercy to grow and develop, whether others understand or accept them. Yet it is Mercy matured that draws others to what was once so misunderstood.
Mercy moves at a slower speed, and that for a God-purposed reason: to extract the deepest amount of insight, understanding, and wisdom from all they see. Mercy is specially gifted to see God’s fingerprints in a fuller, more complex way than the other redemptive gifts. Recall that Mercy as the seventh pillar of the human spirit stands in the place of culmination: with Wisdom, moving toward fulfillment; in woundedness, courting futility. In between, an array of potential redemptive expression to be explored, discovered, embraced, and released into the world.
Worship is essential for the Mercy. God was flawless with Mercy’s design, for this portion absorbs pain and tension around them and can become burden-bearers for others. Holy Spirit knows that worshiping God cleanses the defiling effects. His holiness refreshes Mercy in receiving and then releasing to the rest of the body. True Worshiper Mercy needs to worship and be cleansed like they need air to breathe.
The Mercy’s birthright is God’s purifying gift to the community of the human spirit, to the bride of Christ, and when released into the environment around them. It is Mercy’s gift of presence, not always with words, that portrays their being. Presence has a language of its own. Mercy does in worship and intimate communion with God; others benefit when Mercy emerges perfumed in the fragrance of Christ.
In a turbulent world where people are either dying or being rescued,
we are the sweet smell of the Anointed to God our Father.
II Corinthians 2:15 (The Voice)
How others perceive the Mercy who carries the aroma of Christ, be it with favor or ridicule, pales in significance as the Mercy pursues living to please God, not man.
The Principle of Fulfillment – How
Inherent in Mercy’s design is to give expression to what they feel – be it pain or worship. It frequently finds its release through artistic expression. Worship as singing, to which the churched have grown accustomed, is but one facet of worship expressed. Mercy portions the world ‘round have expressed pain, worship, and celebration of God through countless creative outlets. Mercy’s principle of fulfillment will leave its mark on others through rich worship and celebration of God unique to each person.
*Mercy celebrates what is good, right, and true. Worship in spirit and truth brings clarity to the soul.
*In Redemption’s plan, the Mercy carries the highest authority for ministering to the wounded. As Mercy comes to know the heart of God, they speak the language of His love. Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.1 The mercy seat of Christ is also the source of grace.
*A strength of the Mercy portion is being alert to and aware of the parts and the whole. They are sensitive to things being out of place and recognize alignment when all the pieces are in their right relationship. The Mercy develops understanding of what constitutes wholeness. It is the craving for wholeness both in their life and the lives of others that compels the Mercy to be in the presence of God.
*Once there, the Mercy heart finds rest through enjoying God and being in His presence. All the Mercy knows to be true is stabilized. Here they can savor the fullness and perfection of God, receive it deep into their spirit, and carry it forward to redeem and sanctify time in their own life and the lives of others.
*Mercy draws from each of the other six redemptive gifts; in turn, Mercy enhances all the other gifts. As Mercy is released, through intimacy with the Father, to freely flow, what they do and how they engage takes on a whole different flavor. Mercy can see, hear, and know the worst and yet remain life-giving.
*Mercy has a call of God upon them to erase the line between the secular and the sacred, but hindered if attempted in impurity or by enabling and compromise, some of Mercy’s major weaknesses. Redemptive outworking comes through bringing the fullness of God to all types of people and situations. It is what makes it difficult for Mercy’s human temperament, rewarding and life-giving for Mercy’s spirit.
to be continued …
Mercy & The Principle of Fulfillment – Describing the Gift continues with part two. Mercy is endowed with ability to change the spiritual climate around them through the blessing of presence, without action or words. Yet, like the other gifts, Mercy has its own battlefield: fulfillment versus futility. We will look at more in part two.

What does it mean to bear one another’s burdens?
Question
Answer
Galatians 6:2 says, “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ .” The wordhere means “a weight of personal and eternal significance.” It can refer to a character flaw, a struggle, or a moral requirement. Some have wondered at the meaning of this verse as it compares to Galatians 6:5, which says, “Each one should bear his own load.” Are these verses contradictory? How can we bear someone else’s burdens if we are each supposed to carry our own loads? The Greek word translated “load” in Galatians 6:5 is, which refers to an individual burden that is not transferable. We each have certain obligations for which we alone are responsible. For example, God has given each of us responsibilities for our families (1 Timothy 5:8), our churches (1 Corinthians 12:18), and our personal holiness (1 Peter 1:15–16). We cannot assume the responsibility for someone else’s behavior. We can, however, bear other burdens; we can come alongside a struggling brother or sister and help shoulder the weight of a trial or temptation that threatens to pull him under. We can illustrate the idea of bearing one another’s burdens with the picture of a man staggering beneath a heavy load of grain. He must somehow get this grain home to his family, but he is about to crumble beneath its weight. A brother sees his distress and rushes to his aid, lifting a part of the burden and thereby easing the weight of it. Although the supportive one does not assume the whole load, his help allows the struggling one to carry on to his destination. The church at Antioch is an example of believers bearing one another’s burdens. Acts 11:27–30 records that the church learned of a coming famine in Judea. Though they did not personally know the ones who would be affected by this difficulty, they took up collections to send to them by way of traveling apostles. The Antioch church did not assume responsibility for total provision, but their generosity lightened the load for those who would be suffering. We are each responsible before God for the gifts and resources He has entrusted to us (Romans 14:12; 2 Corinthians 5:10). We cannot blame others, shift responsibility, or make excuses about why we were unfaithful with the assignments we’ve been given—we must bear our own loads. But there are also times when life threatens to overwhelm. A spouse dies. A child is injured. A job folds or a house burns down. As part of the family of God, we are to come to the aid of our brothers and sisters in need (Philippians 2:3–4). When a load suddenly becomes too heavy for one person, we are to bear one another’s burdens. The added strength and encouragement of others is often the difference between pressing on and giving up.Unfortunately, there are a few who isolate Galatians 6:2 and make a career out of asking for help. They misuse God’s command to bear one another’s burdens to avoid their own responsibilities and habitually harass their church families with expectations of aid. Walking in the light of God’s Word is a delicate balance between selfless giving and responsible boundaries . If we err too far on one side, we become self-focused and overly independent. But erring too far the other way leads to assuming responsibility for other people’s messes. When we aim to bear our own loads, while always being available to bear the burdens of others as the Lord leads, we will strike that perfect balance.
Burden Bearing Is A Gift
The Lord reveals that people also carry burdens. We are created in the image of the God, which is an amazing thought. What we consider spiritual gifts are aspects of God’s nature; more on this later. The gift of Burden Bearing is an aspect of God’s nature. Scripture has also revealed that mankind also deals with this gifting, though we have not realized or understood it.
Sometimes a Burden Bearer will try to walk out a person’s bad stuff; they may also try to walk out their good stuff also. Have you ever noticed that when you are around an evangelist you have this feeling you want to evangelize? This may not be yours. You can have a synergistic effect with the person and magnify his gifting, you may even be able to walk in that gifting, yet what is happening is that your gifting of Burden Bearing is in operation. You are so much in sync with the person that you are walking in their giftings. Yes, this can get confusing, but not if you stay in His presence and only do what He wants you to do, and release a person’s good and bad stuff to the cross with only the good stuff going back to them, hopefully with an added blessing.
A Burden Bearer that is full of icky stuff can also pass that stuff to other people, if the Burden Bearer is not walking in holiness and not praying that the connection between him and the other person is being purified through the cross. What happens is that the Burden Bearer becomes defiled and so he or she defiles all that they come in contact with.
The gift of Burden Bearing is a powerful gift and the devil hates its operation in a self sacrificing cross bearing Christian. But, he will use it to spread stuff to others if he can’t destroy the Christian. Like a sink that is meant to wash dishes, if the dishwater is not changed then it just defiles all the dishes that are processed through it; especially if the water has not been changed for weeks, months, or years. I recommend cleansing prayers as often as possible, yet at least three times a day, before your morning and even sacrifice, and then just before bed. This will be wonderful refreshing and cleansing and allow you to better discern what you are picking up during the day.
Keys to understanding what you are going through at a specific time are to know and describe what you are feeling at a specific time and how these feelings appeared. Were you just outside and saw a stranger and all of a sudden you are angry? A key is looking back through the last fifteen minutes to see who you were just around. Also to pray and see if anyone comes to mind. If you see a person whether you know them or not, the Lord may be showing you a picture of who you are connected to. Most burden Bearers can tell what other people are feeling, yet cannot tell what they are feeling at any given time. Writing down and/or discussing your feelings and giving names to those feelings will greatly help you to know what you are going through, determine when you have pick up something, what you have picked up, and greatly help you to process those emotions. Sometimes God gives a Burden Bearer clues as to what they are picking up through physical sensations in their body. As for me personally, when I leave someone and my chest starts constricting and I am having a hard time breathing, I immediately start asking the Lord about anxiety in that person’s life. (As a note: if you are having medical conditions that require medical treatment do go to see your doctor, emergency room, or medical professional. Always continue with all Medical Professionals treatments and instruction).
A Burden Bearer can pick up many things at one time and from many different people. To give you some examples a Burden bearer may all of a sudden be in a state of confusion. Many times I have left someone’s house and then not know how to get home. I know I am to take a right here and a left there, but I can’t remember anything but where I am to turn next; I always get home though. When I notice this I seek the Lord on whom and what I am to pray for them. The person may have a spirit of confusion on them, they may need understanding as to where the next step in their way to God’s heart is, or they may be in confusion as to where their relationship with God is at.
All these things I have described can effect a Burden Bearer, but also may not affect certain Burden Bearers, for we all have things in common, but we all have things that are different in how we personally walk out this very wonderful gift of the nature of God called Burden Bearing.
All praise and glory be to God’s wonderful love, who is willing to weep with those who weep and is willing to help us carry the things that are too heavy for us, according to his wonderful love that was demonstrated through Christ’s death on the Cross. To this demonstration of love is what the Burden Bearer is called; to carry the heart of God, by carrying his or her cross, and interceding for the transgressions according to God’s will.
Grace and peace to you. In Isaiah 1:14, God states that the Israelites New Moon festivals had become a burden to him and he was weary of bearing them. God refers directly to his nature of bearing burdens here. To those who suffer through Burden Bearing, do not despair, even the Lord got weary in Burden Bearing, but more on this later. In Genesis 6:5-6 we see aspects of God’s heart. He was grieved and filled with pain because of the people’s wickedness and the thoughts of their hearts were evil all the time; God was carrying burdens of their sin. In Exodus 3:7 we see God talking to Moses and God says to Moses that he has seen the misery of his people and is concerned about their suffering. In Exodus 28:36-38 we see that God sets up in the Temple aspects of his nature of Burden Bearing in the regulations of the High Priest to bear burdens of guilt. The Lord reveals that people also carry burdens. We are created in the image of the God, which is an amazing thought. What we consider spiritual gifts are aspects of God’s nature; more on this later. The gift of Burden Bearing is an aspect of God’s nature. Always continue with all Medical Professionals treatments and instruction).A Burden Bearer can pick up many things at one time and from many different people. The person may have a spirit of confusion on them, they may need understanding as to where the next step in their way to God’s heart is, or they may be in confusion as to where their relationship with God is at.All these things I have described can effect a Burden Bearer, but also may not affect certain Burden Bearers, for we all have things in common, but we all have things that are different in how we personally walk out this very wonderful gift of the nature of God called Burden Bearing. All praise and glory be to God’s wonderful love, who is willing to weep with those who weep and is willing to help us carry the things that are too heavy for us, according to his wonderful love that was demonstrated through Christ’s death on the Cross. To this demonstration of love is what the Burden Bearer is called; to carry the heart of God, by carrying his or her cross, and interceding for the transgressions according to God’s will.Grace and peace to you.
