《生命恩泉》 Fountain of Love and Life

On this week’s “Love and Life”, Fr. Francis Ching and Po Yee continue to share with us their experiences during their journey to Peru in South America. They described their experiences visiting the congregation of the “Servants of the Plan of God” and introduce this congregation to us. Fr Ching will explain the discernment process of religious life, and how can one discern one’s vocation, and how to freely know oneself in order to fully live out one’s life with joy.

Servant of God

Title used differently in different religions, but denoting piety

“Servant of God” is a title used in the Catholic Church to indicate that an individual is on the first step toward possible canonization as a saint.

Terminology [ edit ]

The expression “servant of God” appears nine times in the Bible, the first five in the Old Testament, the last four in the New. The Hebrew Bible refers to “Moses the servant of Elohim” (עֶֽבֶד הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים ‘eḇeḏ-hā’ĕlōhîm; 1 Chronicles 6:49, 2 Chronicles 24:9, Nehemiah 10:29, and Daniel 9:11). Judges 2:8, 2 Timothy 2:15). refers to Joshua as ‘eḇeḏ Yahweh (עֶ֣בֶד יְהוָ֑ה).

The New Testament also describes Moses in this way in Revelation 15:3 (τοῦ δούλου τοῦ Θεοῦ, tou doulou tou Theou). Paul calls himself ” a servant of God” in Titus 1:1 (δοῦλος Θεοῦ, doulos Theou), while James calls himself ” a servant of God and the Lord Jesus Christ” (θεοῦ καὶ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ χριστοῦ δοῦλος, Theou kai Kyriou Iēsou Christou doulos) in James 1:1. 1 Peter 2:16 describes “servants of God” (Θεοῦ δοῦλοι, Theou douloi) being free to act within the bounds of God’s will. Following usage conventions established in the King James Bible, the word “servant” is never capitalized or used as a title of nobility. (“The servant is not greater than his lord.”)[1]

Catholic Church [ edit ]

“Servant of God” is an expression used for a member of the Catholic Church whose life and works are being investigated in consideration for official recognition by the Pope and the Catholic Church as a saint in Heaven.[2][3] The term “Servant of God” (Latin: Servus Dei) should not be confused with Servus Servorum Dei (Servant of the Servants of God), one of the titles of the Pope.

The term Servant of God is used in the first of the four steps in the canonization process. The next step is being declared Venerable, upon a decree of heroism or martyrdom by the honored. That is followed by beatification, with the title of Blessed. After the confirmation of miracles resulting from the intercession of the honored, the final step is canonization, where the honored would receive the title of Saint.[4][5] The process for canonization is under the jurisdiction of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.

Servant of God is not considered a canonical title in a strict sense by the Catholic Church (as for instance Venerable or Blessed are), but only a technical term used in the process of canonization. Hence, any of the faithful can be named a “Servant of God” in a larger frame of meaning.[6]

Thinking Anew – Mary’s Yes to God

Clearly the liturgical year was compiled by a man. The feast of the Annunciation (when the angel Gabriel shares God’s saving plan with Mary) falls on March 25th, exactly nine months before Christmas Day, the feast of the birth of Christ. Apparently Jesus, as the perfect baby, did not keep his poor mother waiting for the birth any longer than he had to, and arrived precisely to schedule.

Like many Christians, I have a special love for Mary. Interestingly many Muslims have a special love for her too, for their own reasons, and she is the only woman in the Qur’an who is named.

I often reflect on what a courageous, resilient woman she must have been, to rise so gamely to the unique demands made of her.

Again and again we are reminded in Scripture that nobody can be forced into the Kingdom of God, and when the Church loses sight of this it is a blasphemy.

Central to our faith is the precious notion of consent, and the incarnation was utterly dependent upon Mary’s consent to what was being asked of her.

The angel announced to her the news that she had been chosen and outlined to her what was going to happen and then . . . he waited. God’s plan was conditional upon her response.

Mary asked questions – sensible, assertive questions – and then she said “Yes! I’m in! So be it! I trust you Lord!”

Mary inspires us because she goes ahead of us.

Her yes to God led her to places of great joy but also places where none of us would wish to go.

But it is a fact of life that love will inevitably be costly, and at times will feel like a pain in the heart instead of a joy.

I remember my Auntie Mary saying to me that the hardest thing in the world is to watch someone you love suffer, and she was so right.

She knew this to her cost because Uncle Frank’s last years were full of suffering – he had to be cared for in a nursing home instead of at home, and this was a great agony for both of them.

Mary the mother of Jesus was to know this pain in her heart as her as-yet-unborn baby’s journey through life unfolded.

In the film The Passion of the Christ there is a pivotal scene when Mary turns her face away from the suffering of her son carrying his cross on this first Good Friday.

Into her mind flashes an episode from his childhood when as a little boy he fell and hurt his knee. He called for his mum (as children always do when they are in pain) and she comforted him.

Now a grown man, bleeding and abused and staggering to his place of execution, Jesus still needs her.

She can no longer make everything all right by kissing his knee.

But she can refuse to abandon him, come hell or high water. She can choose not to look away, and she accompanied him to the end, and beyond.

Most of us, by the grace of God, are not called to cradle our dead children in our arms, though some of us may be, or may have been, and such scenes are playing out right now all over the world.

But many of us have to deal with watching someone we love suffer, and it can feel unbearable.

Let it comfort us that Mary was called into this dark place also.

Mary inspires and encourages us to say yes to God, whatever joys and sorrows lie in store.

If God is our Father and Jesus is our brother, by adoption, then Mary is our mother also.

The psalmist tells us that “Those who look to him are radiant”, and if Mary is radiant it is because she is always pointing beyond herself to her beloved Son.

She invites us to love Jesus as much as she loves him, as we are invited by Jesus to love Mary as much as he loves her.

Four New Perpetual Promises made in Servants of the Plan of God

Medellin, 09/16/13 (Sodalit News – Colombia). On the feast day of the Holy Name of Mary four sister Servants were incorporated for life to the Servants of the Plan of God, accompanied by family, friends and many members of the Sodalit family.

In a warm atmosphere of family and prayer, over 600 people from amongst family, friends and other members of the Sodalit Family in Colombia came together to attend Mass celebrated by Bishop Flavio Calle Zapata, Archbishop of Ibagué, who received the Servants upon their arrival to Colombia more than eleven years. The newly professed sisters, all Colombian, are Natalia Lara, Sandra Ospina, Martha Tamayo and Sandra Zapatawho, who were accompanied by a large delegation of sister Servants of the Plan of God from different foundations, in addition to the General Coordinator, Sr. Carmen Cárdenas.

Archbisop Flavio Calle explained the meaning of the Feast of the Holy Name of Mary, the date chosen for the perpetual incorporation of the sisters, and then reminded those present of the supernatural meaning of vocation. He defined the perpetual profession of vows as “a sublime event, not of human intelligence but one inspired by Holy Spirit.” He added that “great and sublime things are not accomplished by earthly works, but by the light which comes from above. And in the ritual that we will now carry out, we shall listen as in a calling, as these sisters have been called and they have responded ‘here I am, here I am Lord, for you have called me.’ ”

Addressing the Servants of the Plan of God and especially the Servants making their promises, he outlined the life commitment to which the Lord invites those who consecrate themselves to this religious community, emphasizing the call to appear always “with friendly face, ready to serve the Church, to love Her as Christ loved, loves and will always love his Church.” Also he made reference to another aspect of the call, that found in the faces of those who they are called to serve, reminding the sisters that in the face of our most needy brother, we will “most especially encounter the suffering Christ, the poor Christ, the Christ who suffers, the Christ in solitude and we will even see the face of Christ in so many souls who have become cold and have turned away from God. We are called to rescue them, to clean this face of Christ, to purify it.” Finally he urged them to “be faithful to this call until the end of their lives.”

The Archbishop also reminded the newly professed that the commitment they would assume would be a way to live the life of Jesus, and that in order to do so, they should follow the example of Holy Mary, since from this moment, in a more explicit way, they would be “forever committed as one who has said her “Yes” to the Lord, like Mary when she pronounced her Fiat.”

Currently the Servants of the Plan of God carry out their apostolic work in countries of Central and South America, Europe, Africa and Asia. The first foundation outside of Peru was that of Colombia in 2002, where for more than eleven years they have been carrying out their apostolate in a region of Antioquia called Oriente, evangelizing especially those people who have been displaced and affected by violence. They are in charge of the St. Mary Center, a residence that welcomes university students who come from rural areas affected by the violence and who form part of a program that allows them to attain a college education. They also do pastoral work in the Catholic University of Oriente, take missions to the most remote villages and carry out various charity projects, pastoral work in healthcare centers and catechetical work in both Oriente and in the city of Medellin.

The Servants of the Plan of God is a new community of women dedicated to God, founded in the Archdiocese of Lima by Luis Fernando Figari in 1998. They live a full availability for the joyful proclamation of the Gospel and an intense life of charity, especially with those brothers and sisters who are suffering, the frail, the sick, the poor and needy who seek to discover the face of Christ.

Servants of Plan of God Mission, Angola

We are a religious community founded in Peru. In Africa, we are present in Angola since 2005, in the Huambo Archdiocese. It has been 15 years and with the grace of God our community has grown working in different apostolic and evangelization areas. In the archdiocese we help several parishes and chapels with catechesis, and we are part of different pastoral commissions such as: youth and catechesis. We, also, support and form faith apostolic movements and parish groups. In rural areas, we visit and give pastoral support to several villages. In October 2019 we started the construction of a social development center and a house for another community of Sisters in the Ulembi village located in Vila-Franca, where four Sisters will live permanently and will dedicate to the evangelization and human promotion of the people in that zone. Please help in any way you can. Your support is a blessing.

Following ‘Plan of God’ brings sisters from Peru to Arizona

TEMPE — Four religious sisters from the Peruvian-based Servants of the Plan of God are now calling Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish their new home. Along with their gift of music, they’re intent on bringing the love of God to families, children and college students.

Tempe is home to the religious community’s first U.S. apostolate and the sisters eagerly shared their vocation stories with The Catholic Sun Nov. 28.

The group interview coincidentally capped off their first month of desert life, which has already included a hike up Camelback Mountain, home visits through St. Vincent de Paul and plenty of meet-and-greets. The young sisters also highlighted their, or rather God’s plan, for serving the Diocese of Phoenix.

Young adult outreach

Sr. María José, originally from Chile, will support campus outreach and RCIA for the All Saints Catholic Newman Center serving Arizona State University. She will also support community life for ASU students living in a nearby household run by St. Paul’s Outreach. The organization uses lay witness to personally reach thousands of young adults on at least 14 college campuses nationwide.

Sr. María José brings three years of experience working with collegiate and high school youth in Chile plus involvement in Beyond Sports. The latter effort ensured athletes didn’t sideline their spiritual life by organizing activities that merged the two. Despite the long dark blue habit and veil, the former pole vaulter who once competed at the world level for teenagers is no stranger to hiking nearby mountains and organizing a Mass at the top.

Before joining the Servants of the Plan of God at age 18, Sr. María José admitted, “I thought my happiness would be when I would go to the best championship games.” After a world competition she recalls asking herself, “What is worth it for me if I gain the world but lose my soul?”

She slowly realized that her other regular activities, such as visiting the elderly and those with disabilities, helped them feel closer to God and brought her more sustaining happiness. Sr. María José became a Servant of the Plan of God 12 years ago and spent nine of them in Peru supporting formation of other sisters and visiting parishioners.

Parish life

Three sisters will support parish life at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. It has been 30-some years since the 2,131-family parish has had the presence of a religious sister. Families have been eager to welcome them including a caravan who showed up at the airport.

“We feel at home. The parish is very welcoming and available to help,” Sr. María José said.

Parishioners furnished their convent with a loving touch. They also orchestrated a song to sing at the airport welcoming.

It was the second a capella tune heard outside of security that evening. Sr. Cristina and Sr. María Alejandra, friends who entered the community together, led the sisters in song first.

“We wrote it thinking about the desires we had in our heart to come here — to bring love and joy and hope. We know God has trusted the four of us with this mission,” Sr. Cristina said.

A fifth sister will join them early next year. It was the idea of serving those in need that attracted Sr. Cristina to the religious community three years ago. Various experiences including teaching catechism to those in poor neighborhoods, a retreat for at-risk youth and a personal hospital visit, highlighted her sensitivity to journeying with those who suffer.

“What really captured my attention was the joy, how they live in community giving their lives to these people,” Sr. Cristina said.

She will spend the foreseeable future journeying with Our Lady of Mount Carmel children in the religious education program and sacramental preparation.

Sr. María Alejandra, will oversee pastoral care. It was a pastoral visit to an elderly care home during a mission trip that helped her realize she felt fulfilled.

“I wanted to give them all the love that God had for them,” Sr. María Alejandra said.

Although in temporary vows, alongside Sr. Cristina, Sr. María Alejandra already has experience overseeing a children’s hospital chapel, visiting the young patients and their families and coordinating activities.

Sisterly life

Sr. Veronica, who professed final vows alongside Sr. María José and accompanied the other two during their early discernment, is serving as the local superior and parish youth minister. Being a Servant of the Plan of God has taken her to Peru, Chile and her native Ecuador.

Sr. Veronica has led youth ministry, offered spiritual counseling to girls and supported a center for women with mental disabilities. She taught faith formation to all ages both during discernment and as a sister.

Her love for the Catholic faith deepened as early as 14 or 15 when Sr. Veronica connected with a fledgling youth group as a way to help her search for answers to life’s deeper questions, “Who am I?” and “What’s my purpose?”

“All these answers led me to an encounter with God. He was the answer,” Sr. Veronica said.

Weekly visits with more than 150 girls in a group home, especially the teens, gave her a chance to share her faith. In college, a regular encounter with a street boy who sold what he could to feed his brothers, helped her live it. She began giving him food and one day when friends bought him a sandwich, she still wasn’t satisfied.

“I’m crying for all the kids in the world who are hungry and I can’t do anything for them,” she said.

Sr. Veronica began to offer other small gifts such as a smile to communicate God’s love. She thought about making a sign to get the word out, but realized, “I didn’t need the sign. I needed a habit to announce that God loves the people,” Sr. Veronica said.

The Servants of the Plan of God is a 170-member community spread across eight countries on every inhabitable continent. It was founded in 1998.
