Junior Hunter Finals is a two-day national championship held by the United States Equestrian Federation at two different coasts of the United States (East Coast and West Coast) in the summer of every year. It is held for qualifying Junior Hunter riders who show at either the 3’3″ or 3’6″ height.

Competition [ edit ]

The USEF Junior Hunter Finals was established in 2001 as a way to showcase talent from across the country. In 2014, the 3’3″ section was added due to its growing popularity throughout the states.[1]

To show at Junior Hunter Finals, a rider must either be ranked among the top ten in their United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) Zone–which is accomplished by earning points through competition–or win either a Reserve Champion or Champion title in their respective Junior Hunter division at a USEF rated “AA” “A” “B” or “C” show.[2] Around 700+ horses qualified in 2016 to show at either coast’s finals.[1]

Although a rider may qualify for either the 3’3″ or 3’6″ division, they must pick one to show in during finals if they choose to attend. A rider also must choose between the East Coast and the West Coast finals as they cannot compete in both.

The competition itself consists of three phases (similar to USEF Pony Finals): under saddle, classic round, and handy round. The under saddle is a typical hunter flat class that counts for 20% of the overall score. The classic round is a typical hunter course and the handy hunter is reminiscent of trappy sections of hunt country; each count for 40% of the overall score. Each section is awarded ribbons to tenth place, as well as the overall top ten.[3] An overall championship is awarded for both the 3’3″ and 3’6″ sections.

The USHJA Gladstone Cup Equitation Classic (formerly the Hunterdon Cup) also takes place during Junior Hunter Finals. Riders qualify by being an active USHJA member and winning at least one USEF Medal, ASPCA Maclay, WIHS Equitation Overall, or USEF Show Jumping Talent Search class.[4] The class consists of three rounds, starting with a classic hunter round that each participant completes and is given a score following the round. The top twenty riders from the classic round complete a second handy hunter round. Scores are combined for the two rounds and 4-10 riders are called back at the judges discretion for final testing. Riders switch horses and are allowed a short warm up before completing a shortened test.[5]

The show hunter is a type of show horse commonly seen at equestrian events across Britain. The British “show hunter” is shown primarily on the flat, while the “working hunter” must also jump a series of rustic fences (see also the horses called “show hunters” in the USA).

The governing body that oversees show hunter horses is Sport Horse Breeding (GB), formerly the Hunter Improvement Society.

Horses competing in SHB(GB) affiliated ridden and in-hand hunter classes must be registered with Sport Horse (GB). Horses competing in unaffiliated classes do not need to be registered.

Show hunter ponies are overseen by the British Show Pony Society (BSPS).

Show hunter horses [ edit ]

Weight sections [ edit ]

Show hunter horses are divided into three weight sections – lightweight, middleweight and heavyweight. The lightweight hunter should be able to carry up to 12 st 7 lb (79 kg), stand around 16 to 16.2 hands (64 to 66 inches, 163 to 168 cm) and have about 81⁄2 inches of bone under the knee. The middleweight hunter stands around 16.3 hands (67 inches, 170 cm), can carry between 12 st 7 lb (79 kg) and 14 st (89 kg) and has 8 3⁄4 to 9 inches of bone. The heavyweight stands around 17 hands (68 inches, 173 cm), has 9 inches of bone under the knee and is capable of carrying over 14 st (89 kg).

Other sections [ edit ]

In addition to the three weight sections, hunters may compete in small hunter, ladies’ hunter or working hunter classes. The small hunter must look like a “miniature middleweight”. The maximum height is 15.2 hands (62 inches, 157 cm), and small hunters should have relatively short legs with a deep body. The ladies’ hunter may be small, lightweight, middleweight or heavyweight, and should be ridden sidesaddle. It should have an elegant appearance, perfect manners and give a smooth ride.

Turnout [ edit ]

Show hunter horses should be shown with manes plaited (braided) and ears, faces and legs trimmed. Between nine and 13 plaits is traditional, although the number may vary depending on the horse’s conformation. Tails may be pulled or plaited, although most professionals prefer to pull. Tack should be workmanlike, with bridles having a flat noseband and plain browband. Handlers should wear tweed jackets, shirt and tie, buff or canary breeches and black leather boots with garter straps.

Movement [ edit ]

Show hunters should have a straight, ground-covering movement with little knee action. They should be able to show a good gallop, and come back to canter when asked. The horse should have straight, “daisy cutter” or “pointed toe” movement – “flicky toes” are a fault that suggests a horse has been schooled using artificial aids such as draw reins – and too much knee action is discouraged.

Working hunters [ edit ]

Working hunters can be of any of the weight classes, but are expected to jump a course of natural-looking fences in addition to performing the usual short show on the flat.

Working hunter tack also varies from traditional rules. Martingales, flash nosebands and grackle nosebands are permitted, although in the event of a tie-break, the horse wearing more traditional, simple tack will win. Plain black or brown boots are allowed in the jumping phase only.

Riders may wear body protectors in the jumping phase only.

Show hunter ponies [ edit ]

Show hunter pony classes were first introduced in 1984. Ponies are shown in height classes – up to 12 hands (48 inches, 122 cm) 12 to 13 hands (48 to 52 inches, 122 to 132 cm), 13 to 14 hands (52 to 56 inches, 132 to 142 cm), and 14 to 15 hands (56 to 60 inches, 142 to 152 cm).

Ponies over 148 cm but under 158 cm may enter Intermediate Show Hunter Type classes, which are open to riders under the age of 25.

Turnout is the same as for show hunter horses, and show hunter ponies are expected to show the same paces as their larger counterparts, with the exception of lead rein and first ridden competitors, who do not show the gallop.

A Guide to Hunter & Jumper Terms

Equitation classes are judged on the rider’s position, ability, and poise.

Jumpers are judged on speed, time, and athletic ability over fences. Faults are given for time or knocking down a pole, not jumping, or not clearing an obstacle.

Divisions are the different categories of hunter or jumper classes. They can be based on a horse or rider’s age and/or number of years showing, a rider’s age and status (amateur vs. professional), a horse or pony’s height, or (for jumpers) amount of prize money won.

Over Fences describes a class in which a horse or rider is judged over a course of eight or more obstacles.

Under Saddle describes a class in which a horse or rider is judged at the walk, trot, and canter, going both ways of the ring. Multiple riders compete at the same time in the ring during the Under Saddle class.

Hunter Classic defines a class of two jumping rounds with the scores added together to produce the final pinning (awarding) of the class. Each horse does one round which is scored; then the top fifteen horses with the highest first-round score are invited back to ride a second round.

Hunter Derby defines a class of two jumping rounds with the scores added together to produce the final awarding of the class. The first round requires a minimum of ten obstacles, including one in-and-out, one bending line, and one unrelated distance. Obstacles should resemble those found in the hunt field, such as post and rails, brush jumps, banks and ditches or water obstacles. The top twelve horses are invited back to perform a “Handy” round, which may include a walk or trot fence or opening a gate, in addition to emphasis being made and more points being given for successfully negotiating tighter turns or taking more direct, or “handy” routes from one jump to the next.

Rated/recognized shows are shows run in accordance with United States Equestrian Federation (– USEF) rules and regulations and at which winners’ points are tallied and accumulated towards end-of-year high score awards. Shows are rated from AAA to C depending on the number of points that are given.

Local/unrecognized shows are shows operated on a local or regional club level or by independents. They may be sanctioned by such a club (such as the Baltimore County Horse Shows Association) or by no club at all.

Levels refers to the height of the jumps in a jumper class. For instance, Level 2 is 3’3”. In general, levels increase by 3” increments.

Adult or senior: an individual who has reached his 18th birthday as of December 1 of the current competition year (except for dressage or combined training).

Junior: an individual who has not reached his 18th birthday as of December 1 of the current competition year. Persons born on December 1 assume the greater age on that date.

Classes for specified individuals (instead of specified horses) are: Children’s and Junior classes, although both for individuals under 18, vary in the height of the jumps, and riders in the Children’ s divisions many not cross-enter into the Junior divisions at the same horse show.

Amateur classes are restricted to amateurs as defined by the — USEF. Amateur/Owner classes require the rider to be the owner (or member of the owner’s family) of the horse. Leased horses are not eligible for Amateur/Owner classes.

Maybe you read a prizelist for a local association’s show and been totally stumped by the various division names. Or perhaps you’re just a mom or dad who would love to know what the heck your daughter or son is talking about when they bring up horses. The world of hunter/jumpers can be a very convoluted and confusing place if you’re not familiar with basic hunter jumper terms. So I’m here to shed some light the basic principles of these disciplines. Below are some hunter jumper terms you might hear or see at a show, a lesson or even just in conversation with an equestrian.

Basic Hunter Jumper Terms

Hunters

Hunter classes are judged subjectively based on the horse’s performance [not the rider], over a course of eight to 10 jumps. Hunter rounds should appear effortless to the spectator, with the horse and rider working together to make the course flow from one jump to the next. Show hunters should possess good style over the jumps, consistent pace throughout the course, as well as quiet manners; these are the qualities that judge’s look for when placing a hunter class at a horse show.

Today’s hunters compete over jumps that simulate the type of obstacles one might find out in a fox hunting field such as fallen logs, gates, stone walls, hedges and coups. Riders wear classic outfits that resemble traditional hunting ensembles and impeccable turnout of horses is imperative.

Equitation

Equitation classes are a hybrid between hunters and jumpers. The types of jumps and elements of an equitation course resemble those of jumper classes, but the judging is subjectively based on the rider’s position, form and style. Equitation classes were originally developed to prepare riders to compete in the upper level jumper divisions by teaching effective jumping position and how to navigate difficult courses. Now, they are a division all their own, with classes starting as low as the beginner rider classes, going as high as the nationally recognized Medal Finals, where the jumps reach 3’6” to 3’9”.

In these classes, judges look for proficiency, accuracy and correct judgment in the use of the aids (hands, seat and legs), as well as an overall impression of complete and quiet control, demonstrating skilled horsemanship. The horse is regarded as an equal partner in these classes, but it ultimately is the rider in which the judge is “judging.”

Jumpers

Jumpers are in some ways the antithesis of hunters; these classes are judges objectively based solely on the horse’s athletic ability over fences. A jumper’s only job is to clear all the fences in the course as quickly as possible without knocking over any rails. A horse incurs faults for each mistake made: four faults for each rail knocked down, four faults for every refusal and 1 fault for every second past the time allowed given to complete the course. The horse with the least amount of faults and the fastest time wins.

Hunter Jumper Divisions

Junior

When the hunter jumper term “Junior” is used in a division, it refers to the age of the rider which must be 17 years or under. Examples include Small Junior Hunter or High Junior Jumper.

Child/Children’s

A “Child” or “Children’s” division is restricted to youth competitors age 17 or under. Typically these divisions will jump lower heights than “Junior” divisions. Examples include Children’s Hunter or Low Children’s Jumper.

Adult/Amateur

These divisions are restricted to amateur (not professional) riders who are over the age 18 or older. Typically “Adult” classes such as Adult Amateur Hunters or Adult Amateur Jumpers do not jump as high as Amateur Owner classes like Amateur Owner Hunters or High Amateur Owner Jumpers.

Green

The hunter jumper term “green” refers to the amount of experience a horse has in the show ring and is generally only used to describe hunter classes (not jumper or equitation classes). “Green” classes are generally open to any type of rider (professional, amateur, adult, junior or child) as long as the horse is eligible. There is a strict progression of green classes horses may enter: Baby Green, Pre-Green, First Year Green and Second Year Green.

Small/Medium/Large

When a division includes any of these hunter jumper terms, it describes the height of a horse or pony eligible to compete. Ponies are not baby horses [those are “foals”], but instead describe the height of an equine. All ponies must measure 14.2 hands high at the withers or under. Ponies are further classified into three sizes: Small ponies are 12.2 hands high and under, Medium ponies are 12.3 hands high to 13.2 hands high and Large ponies are 13.3 hands high to 14.2 hands high.

Sometimes Junior Hunter divisions for horses (14.3 hands high and over) are further divided by size as well: Small horses are 15.3 hands high and under; Large horses are 16.0 hands high and over. There is no “medium” division for horses.
