Sigma Advocacy is an initiative designed to focus on building our collective voice around legislative policies that impact our communities locally, statewide and nationally. Supporting the publics concern for a particular cause or policy, chapters are encouraged to host or attend local town halls to address any issues impacting the community. The mission of the International Social Action Program is to encourage social, political and philanthropic leadership that strengthens our respective communities and our membership by Educating Fraternity members on health issues affecting them and their families:
Increasing visibility and sense of self-worth by/through serving in the community
Providing unified efforts that address political and community issues and increasing awarness of the legislative process
Involving the membership in fund raising activities that support organizations that share our vision
Promoting health awareness in an effort to prevent health challenges amongst our membership
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
The American Cancer Society and Phi Beta Sigma are waging war against cancer. Through this partnership, the two organizations fight cancer through legislative campaigns aimed at promoting legislation that combats cancer, encourages education and awareness, and seeks to level the ills of disparity between those who can afford treatments and services and those who cannot.
Our partnership with the American Cancer Society marks a new advocacy outreach strategy that will effectively engage Phi Beta Sigma members to take action in legislative campaigns. American Cancer Society has developed a way for members of Sigma and Zeta, and our family and friends, to write letters to congressional leaders requesting action on particular legislative issues. These action campaigns are called Code Blue Alerts. Brothers will receive the Code Blue Alerts via email. They take two minutes to respond to and they’re easy. These actions that help increase funding for prevention of health disparities and other health issues.
Sigmas will participate in Relay For Life and other fundraising for the American Cancer Society as well. Our goal is to raise $100,000 over the next two years through Relay For Life and other fundraisers. Each chapter is expected to raise and contribute a minimum of $300 to the American Cancer Society.

March for Babies – The March for Babies leads the fight for the health of all moms and babies. Through advocation of policies that prioritize health, the march for babies supports moms throughout their pregnancy. Over 80 years strong, the march for babies is a pillar when supporting mommies and babies health. The men of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. raise countless dollars annually to donate to the March for Babies. In addition, we participate in an annual walk/run to show our support for this national initiative.

Phi Beta Sigma has from its very beginning concerned itself with improving the general well-being of minority groups. In 1934, a well-defined program of Social Action was formulated and put into action. Bro. Elmo M. Anderson, then president of Epsilon Sigma Chapter (New York) formulated this program calling for the reconstruction of social order. It was a tremendous success. It fit in with the social thinking of the American public in those New Deal years. In the winter of 1934 Brother Elmo Anderson, James W. Johnson, Emmett May and Bob Jiggets came down to the Conclave in Washington, DC and presented their Social Action proposition, and just the birth of Social Action as a National Program.
Social Action has been split into four distinct categories, giving chapters and members a variety of initiatives to consider while implementing social action in their communities.
