Apple Butter Festival is back in downtown Spencer
The 44th annual Apple Butter Festival, sponsored by the Spencer Lions Club, makes its way to the courthouse square this weekend to kick off all of your fall fun.
The event begins Saturday morning, September 18 with vendors opening at 9 a.m. and the King and Queen contest from 9:30-10:30 a.m.
This year’s event will feature a cornhole tournament, presented by Hoosier Bar & Grill. Cost is $40 per team with first-place receiving one-half of the total entry fees as prize money. Second place will get their entry fees refunded. Registration is from 10 a.m. until 12 noon with the event to start at 1 p.m. The tournament is double elimination with standard rules. Bring your own partner.
Also back is the annual Apple Butter Festival parade for the kids and the kids at heart. If you wish to watch the parade, the best place to view it is along South Main Street, as it will travel south to north. Please stay on or behind curbs to ensure clear passage of parade entries and safety.
The announcing of the parade will be done from the southwest corner of the courthouse square, with Lion Anton Neff taking the microphone once again.
This year’s Grand Marshals will be frontline and essential workers.
“Each year the Lions Club selects a Grand Marshal from the community,” Spencer Lions Club president Rick Donnella said. “This year we would like to take the opportunity to thank all frontline and essential workers that have given of themselves during these trying times. The first three floats in this year’s parade will be dedicated to these heroic individuals.”
An advertisement in this year’s Apple Butter Festival program sends out a big salute to all essential workers in Owen County, including those from Owen County EMS, Spencer Police Department, Owen County Sheriff’s Department, area firefighters, IU Health, Owen County Health & Lion Sandy Miller and Owen County Health Department, Babbs Supermarket, Spencer Integrated Health, West Parrish & Pedigo, CVS Pharmacy, Spencer-Owen Community Schools, Save-A-Lot, Owen Valley Health Campus and McCormick’s Creek Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.
Free entertainment will be held all weekend, including:

Owen County Apple Butter Festival
Description:
As many of you know by now, the Spencer Lions Club Apple Butter Festival will be held at the Owen County Fairgrounds, rather than the Owen County Courthouse square. This is due to the #SpencerCorridor and Spencer Downtown Streetscape construction projects. There are four designated areas for non-food vendors (one area is inside a building, two areas are outside but under roof, and one area is completely outside). There is also one designated area for food vendors which is completely outside, and an area for entertainment which is outside, but under roof. We also have a designated overflow area for additional vendors as needed. Please note that this is the proposed layout for now. Since this is the first time the event is being held at the Owen County Fairgrounds, we reserve the right to make changes as we deem appropriate, strictly for the good of the festival, everyone participating, and all visitors.

This festival is a huge hit for Spencer Indiana and we are really proud to be involved with it this year. This two day event will take over the entire town with a parade, scavenger hunt, food trucks, and a ton of vendors. This also happens to be move-in weekend for UI (from what I’ve been told).

Apple Butter Festival Recap
Last weekend, Spencer PRIDE partnered with White River Valley PFLAG at the 34th Annual Apple Butter Festival in order to promote our upcoming Out in the Silence event. We passed out almost two hundred flyers advertising the free movie screening and dinner, scheduled to take place on October 10th from 5:30 – 7:30 PM at the Spencer Presbyterian Church Cornerstone Hall.
Unlike the pride events we participated in this summer, the Apple Butter Festival was a two day event. That meant that we had to get lots of volunteers to staff our booth. Thankfully, Spencer PRIDE members stepped up to fill all of our gaps. Their dedication ensured that we spent 21 hours promoting the film, selling water and t-shirts, and collecting sign-ups for our Spencer Pride Quarterly e-Newsletter.
In addition to passing out so many flyers for the OITS event, we sold more shirts at Apple Butter Festival than at both of the other pride events combined. Best of all, our water sales were a huge success and brought in some much-appreciated funds. It helped that we had the best price of ice cold water available at the festival, thanks to some creative investigating by Spencer PRIDE members.
This was our first time participating in the Apple Butter Festival, and Spencer PRIDE was proud to be there to represent the LGBTQI community. A candidate running for state office stopped by and noted that it was the first time he had seen any pride group present at a county festival of any kind. We were honored that he stopped by to spend time with us talking about gay and lesbian issues, and we were even more honored that he noticed the impact that we are having in Owen and the surrounding counties.
We look forward to many more years of participation in the Apple Butter Festival.
