Stabicraft 2500 Ultracab XL ~ Boating NZ

Just when you think Stabicraft’s design team has settled into a conventional frame-of-mind, along comes a new contender to tweak your fancy.

Stabicraft boats always look functional to me. I like that about them, and judging by the brand’s worldwide success, plenty of other people do as well.

That’s not to say Stabicraft pay no attention to styling. On the contrary: its in-house designers take great care to ensure every Stabicraft is unmistakeable and unique – perhaps never more so than with the new 2500 Ultracab XL.

In the 2500 the Ultracab concept provides a larger than usual wheelhouse/cabin, fully enclosed for year round comfort, with the ability to seat six. Ultracab models have proven popular in offshore markets, particularly North America.

CLEVER INTERIOR

In recent years the Stabicraft design team has come up with new materials and innovative design features to make the boats even more functional. The 2500 Ultracab XL is loaded with clever engineering and design to make maximum use of limited space.

The wheelhouse interior is modern and stylish; it feels spacious compared to older Stabicraft hardtops, thanks in part to the design of the cabin sides, but also due to lots of glass.

By virtue of sliding sections, relocating panels and the clever reconfiguration of existing spaces, the 2500 Ultracab XL’s interior morphs from a fairly standard, albeit stylish and well-appointed, wheelhouse/cabin to an overnighter with berths for up to four adults.

A compact galley with a diesel hob that doubles as a heater for winter boating takes care of cooking duties, there’s a small 12V fridge under the passenger seat and a cockpit shower, so overnight trips are definitely on the cards.

The interior’s colour palette works really well too: cream and brown paint surfaces, teak-look Ultralon EVA flooring and camel Frontrunner ceiling and wall lining, complemented by grey and black vinyl upholstery.

An electric toilet is located in the forward cabin between the v-berths with the holding tank under the floor between thefront seats. A 60-litre freshwater tank under the sink also serves the shower and there’s a small diesel tank for the cooker/heater tucked into the side shelf on the port side.

SLEEP TIME

Reconfiguring the boat for sleeping transforms its interior. The passenger seat can be configured to face forward or aft to allow it to address the drop-down dinette table. Fold the table away against the wall, slide the seat base back until the backrests lie flat, pull out another sliding panel and, with the addition of extra squabs, you have a generous berth. Another full length berth can be created across the back of the wheelhouse using additional squabs and drop-in panels.

Up forward the v-berths can be extended into the wheelhouse to make them full length; drop-in squabs turn the entire forwardcabin into a large, comfortable double berth.

Storage options are many and varied, including multiple cubby holes, shelves, under-bunk and under-seat stowage, underfloor lockers and even storage in the sliding seat back and ceiling.

Handholds are everywhere in evidence, inside and outside the wheelhouse, so there’s always something to grab onto.

New Zealand-manufactured Hella marine LED lighting has been used throughout the vessel. Hella’s new Seahawk LED floodlights are used all around the hardtop to illuminate the decks and cockpit. These lights come with a five-year warranty.

REVERSE SHEER

One of the most striking features of the 2500 is its workboat style reverse sheer windscreen. It offers many advantages in practice: vision from the helm is excellent, and because the windscreen slopes forward, there is effectively more usable space in the wheelhouse because you stand/sit much closer to the screen. Two Roca windscreen wipers deal with any spray and the sloping, wedge-shaped cabin top/foredeck further enhances forward vision.

The helm seat is a beauty. A high-tech KAB suspension seat, it sits on an aluminium base with stowage underneath. The swivelling seat has a bolster for lower back support when standing up to drive, as well as adjustments for height and distance from the wheel. The degree of spring damping is also adjustable.

The hardtop’s roofline slopes towards the bow relative to hull, contributing to its distinctive looks. In profile the boat is a series stacked wedges comprising the pontoons and forward cabin, topped off by the hardtop glasshouse and sloping roofline.

The glasshouse is extensive, wrapping right around the hardtop, and the way Stabicraft have enclosed the rear of the wheelhouse completely in tinted glass looks great. The transparent rear bulkhead lets you see all the action in the cockpit from inside the cab.

Built strong with carry racks for kayaks, paddleboards or an inflatable dinghy, the hardtop roof also supports the radar dome, aerials, rocket launcher and Hella floodlights. Mounts for the Kilwell game poles are secured to the hardtop sides. Grab rails along the roof make sidling around the hardtop easy.

BIG COCKPIT

Although the Ultracab hardtop is relatively large, the 2500 still has a very usable cockpit. Stabicraft’s Game Chaser transom provides a generous glass-fronted live bait tank, well designed bait station and plenty of protection for the batteries, which have their own locker up off the floor. Across the back of the bait station are a pair of drink/sinker holders, a couple of rodholders and a sturdy towing hook.

The Game Chaser transom’s sloping underwater profile provides superior steering in reverse and the ability to back up at three or four knots without shipping water. A drop-in door closes off the transom step-through to the boarding ladder on the port side and a pair of fold-down transom seats can also be used as steps. The cockpit drains to a sump with an automatic bilge pump on a float switch, there’s a freshwater shower on the port side and saltwater washdown to starboard. Six through-gunwale rodholders and a pair of drink/sinker holders each side take care of fishing duties, complemented by the 10-position rocket launcher across the back of the hardtop.

SMOOTH TRAVELLER

The autopilot, VHF radio and radar are Lowrance, there’s a Lowrance sonic hub stereo system with Fusion speakers and a Maxwell windlass with a Sarca anchor and rope-chain rode operated remotely from the helm.

Although the weather couldn’t have been nicer with no wind and glass-calm seas, we managed to create enough surface disturbance by throwing the boat around to get an impression of how well it rides.

Over the years Stabicraft has really worked on the ride and handling of its boats, incrementally improving pontoon and hull design with every new model. The 2500 Ultracab XL is a smooth, comfortable traveller. Weighing in at 2.5 tonnes it features Arrow Pontoons, a 19-degree deadrise at the transom and 6mm thick hull plates. It should be a fine performer in the rough, and dry too.

Optional strakes provide a little extra lift, but the chines control the spray. The 2500 also turns on a dime, hangs on like grim death in tight turns with two propellers gripping the water, and feels nicely balanced. In addition, twin outboards allow a greater range of, as well as independent, engine trim adjustment. No trim tabs were fitted.

In the glassy conditions we managed just under 40 knots at 6100rpm. With a ripple on the water I’d expect to see 40 knots plus. The vessel cruises very nicely between 25 and 30 knots, 45 and 57 litres per hour respectively, both engines. At a fast trolling speed of 11 knots, the fuel burn is 23lph, which reduces to less than half that at 7.5 knots. The fuel tank under the cockpit sole holds 378 litres.

As reviewed the Stabicraft 2500 Ultracab XL has a towing weight of 3,250kg when half full of fuel. She rides on a tandem-axle Voyager trailer with driver-actuated Cargo Hydrostar electric brakes. The trailer also features a Balex launch and retrieve system which, even with a boat of this size, in good conditions allows single-handed launching and retrieving.

BOLD STYLING, IMPECCABLE FINISH

The latest in Stabicraft’s Ultracab range is a boldly-styled, highly capable trailer boat suitable for a range of activities, including serious fishing and diving, overnighting and blue water cruising.

Ample power from twin engines and a comprehensive equipment list are reflected in the review boat’s $250,000 price tag, but the 2500 Ultracab XL is well put together and impeccably finished.

Packages start from $184,611 with a single 250hp Yamaha or $187,313 with twin 115hp Yamahas.

Stabicraft 2500 Ultracab XL review

We are blessed with some wonderful boating and fishing grounds in many parts of this country: sheltered bays, harbours and offshore islands that can make ‘stay-away’ boating expeditions one of life’s great pleasures.

The Bay of Islands, the Hauraki Gulf, Great Barrier Island, the Coromandel Peninsula, the Marlborough Sounds and Fiordland are a few of the better-known stay-away locations. But to explore these – and other regions – in comfort, you need the right boat. Well-known Southland boat builder Stabicraft may have built its ultimate trailerable stay-away boat in the 2500 Ultracab XL, and in the process proved that you can have your cake and eat it, too – in considerable comfort.

Invercargill-made Stabicraft aluminium pontoon boats are renowned for their safety, stability and load-carrying ability. While I will grant you that, at first glance, the 2500 Ultracab XL is not a ‘classically beautiful’ rig, I have always been a function-over-form sort of man. And in a practical sense, this is a brilliant boat. The vessel’s lines are a little in the style of a robust commercial work boat, thanks to the wheelhouse’s reverse sheer, and there also appears to be a bit of motor-home in its DNA.

Better still, the design team at Stabicraft has fitted a huge range of original features into this hull without it becoming crammed or cluttered. In fact, there are so many clever fit-out ideas that there will not be space to cover everything in this article.

Putting it together

The tapering Arrow pontoons are pure Stabi’ and offer an impressive reserve buoyancy of around 2,100kg. Other design features include the Game Chaser transom configuration and Wing Coamings (gunwale tops kicked up on the outside edge). The cabin sides are largely constructed of tinted, toughened glass, giving excellent all-round visibility (aided by Roca wipers) and a light, airy feeling to the lockable cabin. Clever sliding windows are cut into the main side ‘screens for ventilation and communication.

The cabin roof is an obvious spot to carry an inflatable tender, which can be lashed down to the rails fitted along each side.

As mentioned, every possible nook and cranny inside the cabin has been used for stowage – more than I can really detail here, but trust me, you won’t have any problem with gear stowage space!

The rig meets CPC, USCG and ABP safety standards and is rated for up to nine adults.

Inner workings

An electric flush toilet is fitted under the berth in the bow, with an under-deck holding tank enabling it to comply with regulations.

The forepeak’s large double berth folds forward and locks, forming a half-height bulkhead to constrain stowed luggage when the boat’s underway. The cabin is fully lined and offers under-berth stowage, side shelves, and two underdeck stowage holds.

A hatch in the forward bulkhead gives access to the anchor-well, while another in the roof allows for more ventilation and light options. Cabin decking is Ultralon faux-teak.

The fit-out has made extensive use of NZ-made Hella Marine LED products. Again, too many are incorporated to mention them all, but roles include extensive cabin, cockpit and task lighting, along with Sea Hawk forward- and side-facing floodlights, assisting with docking etc after dark. Even the Stabicraft logo on the cabin sides can be backlit at night.

Complementing the forward berths (which can sleep three adults), two more berths can be made up by adjusting the foldup dining table and bench seats. Formal seating includes a very comfortable helm seat with roll-back bolster, mounted on a shockabsorbing KAB base, plus passenger and table bench seats, along with a fold-out dickey seat at the rear of the cabin.

The dining table can seat four, and a 44-litre 12-volt fridge is built under the passenger bench seat. Grab rails have been fitted wherever appropriate.

To further the boat’s stay-away credentials, a compact galley is fitted behind the helm seat. Stabicraft has decided to avoid using propane gas, aware of its dangers, and opted instead for a diesel stove, which can also be set up as a cabin heater. A sink with a 60-litre freshwater system is also fitted, and diesel-powered water heating is an option. Cupboard stowage is built inside the unit and in cabin wall lockers.

The electronic tasks are handled by a Lowrance HDS12 multifunction unit, which displays GPS, sounder, radar, side-scan, autopilot, and a sonic-hub sound system with radio and Bluetooth and Fusion speakers.

Also recessed into the console are a Lowrance Link5 VHF and Yamaha digital engine gauges and switching, including the anchorwinch controls. At least four USB ports are fitted, so the toys will keep working.

Great outdoors

There is no argument that the insides of the 2500 are very cleverly designed, but it is in the cockpit that the fish-and-dive action occurs, and Stabi’ has not allowed the home comforts to intrude on the work space. The cockpit is substantial and its chequer-plate decks, overlaid by tube-matting, make for a very decent workplatform, enhanced by the exceptional stability afforded by the pontoon configuration. High sides with flat faces offer top-of-thigh support to adult anglers, as well as side stowage pockets housing a deck-wash and the small diesel tank that feeds the stove.

A flap in the rear face of the cabin bulkhead lifts and locks to make a bench seat that provides an ideal spot for lure-watching, as well as disclosing a stowage space for a chilly bin. Two more folddown bench seats are fitted in the stern corners, with the port-side one doubling as a step over the transom step-through (also fitted with a drop-door).

This boat is easily used for game fishing. The starboard side of the transom wall is unbroken by a door, making it the ideal spot for a stand-up angler to park his backside while the boat is chasing down hooked gamefish by running ahead (enabling the helmsman to easily see the line and avoid running over it). Outrigger mounts are fitted.

A large bait-station in the middle of the transom features a locker for the twin-battery system (plus isolation switching) below and a live-bait tank above. On top is a hinged cutting board; either side (or both) can be opened to access the live baits in the tank. This unit also has a tow point for water toys or skis, two rod holders, and a pull-out freshwater shower nozzle for divers and swimmers to wash salt off their bodies.

Along with the two positions on the bait-station, four throughgunwale rod holders are fitted along the sides, with a ten-position rocket launcher on the hard top. Half-a-dozen cup or sinker holders are also fitted.

Divers, swimmers, or those boarding the boat while it is on the trailer, can use a fold-down T-shaped boarding ladder adjacent to the transom step-through, aided by a grab rail and non-skid plate.

Make mine a double

The 2500 Ultracab XL is configured for twin outboards of 150- 200hp (maximum) each. The safety aspects of two outboards are well known and recommended for a boat that may be used for trips to remote areas; the test boat has twin 150hp Yamaha four-strokes, with counter-rotating 17-inch-pitch props.

The underfloor fuel tank has a capacity of 378 litres, providing a range of around 200 nautical miles.

Steering is hydraulic, and although the twin-binnacle engine controls are cable operated, they are positive and easy to use, making the Ultracab a pleasant rig to helm.

Kev Griffin (from South Auckland Stabi’ agents Kev and Ian’s Marine) and I took the big Stabi’ out for a run from South Auckland’s Half Moon Bay and around the south coast of Waiheke Island. It was a beautifully calm morning on the outbound leg, but by the time we headed back, the wind had come up to 15 knots in a wind-against-tide situation.

For those not familiar with these waters, it is shallow and currents can run strongly. In this case it kicked up into a steep chop of around three-quarters of a metre, mostly right on the bow. The big Stabi’ was easy to trim using the twin outboards, and blitzed the sloppy conditions while we stayed warm and dry inside the wheelhouse. The pontoon configuration gives excellent stability.

Roadworthy

Part of the design concept behind the 2500 Ultracab XL was to create a ‘trailerable launch’. The trailer is a reinforced Voyager Elite tandem-axle model with zinc-protected leaf-spring suspension.

It features a Hydrastar braking system (activated by the towvehicle’s brakes), seven pairs of wobble rollers per side, parking brake, dual coupling, dual-ratio manual winch, wind-down dual jockey wheels, walkboard, and submersible LED lights. It is also fitted with the innovative Kiwi-made Balex Automatic Boat Loader, which is basically a conveyor-belt system that loads the boat onto the trailer. The tow weight of the rig is approximately 3.3 tonnes, including fuel.

All-in-all

The 2500 Ultracab XL combines Stabicraft’s proven stability, safety and load-carrying ability, a whole lot of brilliant layout designs (with a splash of campervan DNA), a spacious and practical cockpit, and great sea-keeping with blue-water capability. What an excellent stay-away boat!

Stabicraft 2500 Ultracab XL – Power Boat News

Stabicraft have always been market leaders and the recently released Stacer 429 Seamaster 2500 Ultracab XL is no exception. Barry Thompson checks out this new and very distinctive addition to the Stabicraft range.

It’s a while since I have done a review on a Stabicraft, so it was with particular interest that I took up Craig Lewis’s offer to have a run in the new 2500 Ultracab XL with a Mercury 250 V8 Verado he had just rigged. As Craig is both New Zealand’s top Stabicraft and Mercury dealer, it only seemed right to accept.

I have had some experience already with the Mercury V8 and what an engine. Power plus from zero to 6000 rpm and as I was to find out, a perfect match for the big Stabi. Gulf Harbour on a crisp winter morning was the venue and while the sea was calm and the air chilly, driving from inside the wheelhouse left me warm and comfortable.

The first thing you notice about the Stabicraft 2500 Ultracab XL is the distinguishing reverse sheer windscreen, which was popularized in the Alaskan crab boat industry in the 1970s, where the leaned forward glass wheelhouse was designed to help keep the breaking seas impacting the glass. In Alaska, this fashion is still referred to as a ‘crabber cabin’ design. Anyone who has watched the popular Deadliest Catch TV Series will know what sort of seas these boats go through and while it is highly unlikely that you will ever experience them in your Stabicraft 2500 Ultracab XL, the principle is still the same.

Stabicraft 2500 Ultracab XL

Explore anywhere, anytime, any weather

The 2500 Ultracab XL is the perfect choice for long adventures. The extended cabin area of the XL provides more people with more space and extensive storage for overnight stays and diverse explorations. The 2500 Ultracab XL was designed to handle all conditions you may encounter, from holiday cruising, family fishing trips to serious off-shore fishing. Adventuring with confidence is an understatement when it comes to the 2500 Ultracab XL.

FLOATING FORTRESS: STABICRAFT 2500

From the wilds of the Southern Ocean comes a new design that harks back to the classics.

As we loaded a variety of rods onto the shiny new Stabicraft 2500 Ultracab, dirty grey clouds descended from the hills surrounding the local boat ramp. Cold, damp and windy, it seemed the perfect setting to test the all-weather warrior from the Land of the Long White Coud. The spacious, fully enclosed cabin with its diesel heater looked like the spot to be.

Sure enough, as we embarked on our 40nm table-fish mission the clouds closed in and the temperature dropped, shortly followed by icy rain. Departing the harbour, shrouded in a fog of grey mist, we were totally dependent on the course laid down in the Lowrance HDS12.

INTO THE CLEAR

A couple miles clear of the hills and on course for “the spot”, the mist and rain cleared to reveal blue skies above the cloudbanks. In this moment the value of the all-glass rear bulkhead was revealed with near-perfect 360 degrees of visibility from the spacious cabin.

From the helm, the boat had a fortress-like feel; in fact, with a top speed in excess of 40 knots, it’s almost a flying fortress! While still at the conservative end of the Ultracab 2500’s recommended horsepower range, the twin Yamaha 150hp four-strokes pushed the hull along at a surprising clip. The sound of the twins singing in unison struck a pleasing chord as we raced to our destination. It would be quite an experience to swap the 150s out for the maximum recommended 200hp outboards.

THE SPOT

Soon enough, our skipper made the call that we were close to “the spot”, encouraging the crew to rig up a variety of options for catching the fish we hoped would be waiting below. Space for rigging and storing tackle proved no issue at all and all four anglers found ample room to work in comfort. Within minutes, dinner was hauled over the side in numbers greater than the camera crew could record.

Four anglers hustled around the deck in a fish-catching fever, pulling up one snapper after another while drifting beam to the sea. The Ultracab’s attitude never faltered; you probably wouldn’t expect anything less from a brand with “Stabi” in its name. The airtight, chambered hull does all the leveling work. It’s not just a nice-to-have feature, either – it’s a bona fide safety feature. Should one of the chambers rupture, flooding will be contained to a small area, making it virtually unsinkable.

ANGLES FOR ANGLERS

The focal point of the cockpit is the massive transom fish-box with a split-lid filleting board. The dissected board allows for cut baits to be managed on one side, while keeping open access to the fish-box. It’s a functional set-up with plenty of space for unused lures, tools, sinkers and the like, and comes complete with a wash-down pump close at hand and substantial drains to move the mess away from the knife-man quickly, rather than down the trousers. It’s also at a friendly height, with a built-in knife holder and a flat leading edge to ensure there’s no obstruction when cleaning the catch on the hop.

However, the best features in this boat are inside the cabin – a fully functional galley and dinette. We had the perfect opportunity to test out the internals, with six hungry men and a generous supply of fresh fillets at hand. The cabin filled with the smell of sizzling snapper while four blokes sat comfortably around the foldout dining table, regaling each other with tales of snapper strikes. The other two dined al fresco. It’s a minor niggle, but it would have been nice to have a rear window in the cabin open to the deck, perhaps with a folding slider, improving the airflow and ambience on warmer days.

FLEXIBLE FISHING SPACES

The boat feels big, rather like a launch – an attribute I put down to the forward-raked windscreen, a benefit of which is the distance between your nose and the glass when cruising at 40 knots. There’s no danger of connecting the two with this configuration! Design innovations continue with the seating, sleeping and storage system creating the ultimate adaptable adventure platform.

On a typical fishing trip (where the front berth typically becomes a catch-all for gear), the aft cushions can be folded up 90 degrees to the V-berth and double as a secure storage locker. On overnight adventures, these cushions simply fold back down to offer a double V-berth.

The flexible bedding options extend to the passenger’s seat, which can be either front- or rear-facing during the day, then transforms into an additional single berth at night. Furthermore, the lunch table opens to reveal additional storage for the galley. The aft seat converts into a full-width bench seat or bed. All-up, six adults can be seated; or four adults can sleep in full-length beds.

There are some other clever touches, too, like cup holders large enough to cater for coffee mug handles, storage pockets everywhere and grab rails wherever you need one.

SERIOUS REP’

For those familiar with the brand, the angular exterior styling is distinctly Stabicraft. The look has evolved in keeping with the engineering innovations. The hull chambers have been redesigned as Arrow chambers to soften the shoulders and cushion the ride in choppy or tidal conditions. The hull now features a finer entry, cutting efficiently through the sea before the sealed chambers come into play. The overall design works brilliantly to deliver hull lift and a level attitude. There’s been some design changes aft, with a Game Chaser Transom. As its name suggests, the angular design comes into play when the vessel is hard in reverse chasing game fish such as tuna or marlin.

Stabicraft has earned a reputation as a safe, comfortable, ride – and The Captain’s crew has gone on record as saying the 1650 was one of the most fun (yet safe) rides home from the shelf. The 2500 won’t let the team down. In fact it goes one better, with the best internal fit-out and flexibility I’ve seen from the New Zealand builder. We’re yet to find a dissatisfied Stabicraft owner, so it’s probably no surprise that Stabicraft boats feature prominently with coastguards, police and port authorities around the world.

FLICK OF A SWITCH

For snapper slayers, the trip fulfilled fishing expectations; if not our weather ambitions. I’ve never fished six blokes out of a 25ft trailer-boat; in fact, I’d probably dread the thought if I hadn’t been handed the keys to the 2500 Ultracab. If you’ve got the coin, the tow rig and six mates, then don’t hold back. If you do buy one, but have no luck with the fish, you can always flick it into “sleepover” mode and wait for the fish to come to you, or wait for the crowds to disperse from the ramps.
