Smokers say government’s latest cigarette rules are ‘word games,’ won’t curb habit
To James Doarnberger, the idea that removing words like “light” or “low tar” from cigarette boxes will keep people from buying them is just blowing smoke.
“The only thing that the light cigarettes have is more air filters,” the 46-year-old Plainfield Township resident said while smoking a hand-rolled cigarette Monday on Monroe Center NW in Grand Rapids.
“The tobacco companies are going to find a way to make you think they’re safe.”
Starting today, tobacco companies no longer can sell cigarettes with words such as “low tar,” “light” or “mild” on the package.
But the companies are adapting, using other methods to market cigarettes using familiar packaging. For example, Marlboro Lights are now known as Marlboro Gold Label, and are sold in the same color box as Marlboro Lights. Marlboro Ultra Lights, which came in a silver box before, are now called Marlboro Silver Label.
Other companies, too, are removing the banned words from the box but keeping the packaging colors.
Doarnberger, who said he doesn’t usually buy pre-packaged cigarettes, isn’t the only one who thinks packaging changes aren’t going to curb smoking.
Bill Bennett, owner of Elliot’s News and Tobacco on Ottawa Avenue NW, said he began receiving the newly-marked packages about a month ago. He believes simply removing the word “light” doesn’t change the way people buy cigarettes.
“Colors, number, words. What’s it going to change?” he said. “It’s all going to be a word game. It’s not going to make a difference.”
He says he mentions to customers the names have changed, but knows it could be a long time before they get used to the new packaging terms. And he doesn’t plan to correct them anytime soon.
James Baker, 31, of Grand Rapids, has been smoking since he was in the Marines seven years ago. He lit up a Marlboro Menthol Gold Label cigarette — formerly a Marlboro Menthol Light — Monday outside the Kent County Courthouse.
He said the only thing different about it was the box label. “To me, it’s the same thing,” he said. “I suppose it could be a deterrent effect for new smokers.”
The new restrictions are kicking in a year after the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act was signed into law.
The act started with the ban of candy- and fruit-flavored tobacco, and gave the Food and Drug Administration the power to regulate the tobacco industry. Eventually, the act could impose other regulations, such as putting graphic image warnings on cigarette boxes and possibly raising the minimum age to purchase.

Other restrictions starting today include limits on marketing non-tobacco products as giveaway items and tobacco sponsorships of sporting events and entertainment, as well as larger warning labels on smokeless tobacco.
“People won’t even notice that,” Bennett predicted.
Some people, however, are championing the changes. Jan Schut, a volunteer ambassador for West Michigan for the American Cancer Society, said the new provisions should help curb teenage smoking, which, she said, is the ultimate goal.
“Hopefully, with the new resolutions, it will decrease the number of new smokers,” said Schut, 58, of Zeeland. Schut began working with the ACS a few years ago when she lost her husband and father to cancer just eight weeks apart. Her father died of lung cancer, and her husband from colon cancer. She believes smoking killed both of them.
Her two adult children have been smoking since they were teenagers, something she has fought against.
“They both have tried to give it up at times,” she said.
