Where to Donate Clothes in India: 7 Orgs That Will Ensure They Reach the Needy
We all have clothes lying around the house that aren’t being used anymore and could very well be given away to those who might have better use for them.
While sometimes our busy schedules may keep us from depositing the clothes, many of us probably don’t know where we could go ahead and donate them.
To help you manage your ‘to-give-away’ pile of clothes better, we have compiled a list of seven organisations where you can distribute your used clothes.
There’s a general rule of thumb when you’re thinking of donating old clothes—would you give it to a friend? If the answer is yes, then you could go right ahead. If the answer is no, because the clothes are torn, dirty or unusable, it would be better to find alternate uses/options.
Do be mindful of the clothes that you set aside for this exercise.
1. Clothes Box Foundation (CBF)
Location: Haryana, Maharashtra, Odisha and Jharkhand
How does it work?
Once you have kept aside the clothes you wish you donate, you can call CBF or visit their Facebook page and leave them a message.
You can then either wait for them to pick up the clothes (the organisation provides this service at a nominal charge) or get the clothes delivered at their collection centre.
Once in, the clothes are sorted and distributed by the team at CBF. The photographs of the distribution will also be uploaded on Facebook if you wish to see them.
Contact details: You can reach their website here, Facebook page here or call them on +91-78383-71356.
2. Share At Door Step (SADS)
Location: Bengaluru. SADS also has 100 NGO partners across 8 cities and various corporate tie-ups.
How does it work?
After you have sorted out the clothes that you wish to keep aside for donation, visit the SADS website and enter your location, following which a list of NGOs in your area will appear on your screen.
Select the NGO whose requirement matches your donation and once done, add the items you wish to donate into your checkout bag and schedule a pickup.
Please note that as of now the pick-up facility is available only in Bengaluru. A convenience fee is levied depending on the number of items that you are donating. The starting rate is Rs 199. You can also choose to drop off the clothes by yourself.
Contact details: You can visit their website here, Facebook page here, or call them on
+91-88847 84742.
3. The Open House
Location: Chennai
How does it work?
In December 2015, after the Chennai floods, Rotarian Isai Prakash and his team found that they had a lot of leftover used clothes.
It occurred to them that they could be given a second chance, and after sorting through them, getting them cleaned, and mending them, they distributed the clothes amongst the needy.
They also went a step ahead, and gift-wrapped the clothes that they were handing out. While it started out of necessity, the work that this group does has been continuing.
Contact details: if you are in Chennai and have some clothes that you would like to donate, call on +91-9677085646 or +91- 9710535297.
4. Apang Manav Mandal (AMM)
Location: Ahmedabad
How does it work?
If your clothes are in good condition and can be worn by people between the ages of 7-25, look no further than AMM.
Founded in the year 1958, AMM is devoted to the cause of the disabled and looks after all their needs and requirements.
Brijita, the Chief Administrator of the organisation says, “Our only request is that people donate clothes that are in good condition. Do not leave behind clothes that you wish to throw away or discard.”
Contact details: The clothes can be dropped off at Dr Vikram Sarabhai Road, B/h. ATIRA, Ahmedabad-380015.
You could contact them on 079- 26302643 or 079- 26308156, or even visit their website here.
5. Mahesh Foundation
Location: Belgaum
How does it work?
This organisation has been working for the welfare of children and youth who have been impacted by the HIV/AIDS virus. Founded by Mahesh Jadhav in 2006, they request for woollens, sarees, salwar suits, trousers, shirts, kurta-pyjamas and even curtains and bed sheets to be used at their orphanage that houses almost 40 children.
Contact details: Ashakiran Children Care Home, Plot No.1284, Jain Basti Galli, Near Harsha Hotel, Ramatirth Nagar, Belgaum -590015.
You can reach them at +91- 9164575327 or +91-8494945327.
6. Prayas
Location: Hyderabad
How does it work?
According to Shaik Altaf Ahmed, the Executive Director of Prayas, the organisation started a project called ‘Distribution of reusable items’ in 2008.
Under this, they not only accept clothes for those above the age of 12 but also other reusable household items.
Until March 2019, donors could schedule a pickup, but Ahmed says that as of now, the service stands cancelled.
Contact details: You can connect with Ahmed at +91- 9866335488 or send an e-mail to [email protected] Their office is located at # 4-1-21, Champa Estate, Boggulakunta, Tilak Road, Abids, Hyderabad.
The official website can be reached here.
7. Clothes for Help
Location: Kolkata and Pune
How does it work?
Once you donate your clothes, the organisation sorts through it and ensures that the families that are in dire need are directly impacted.
The organisation members visit different slums across the city to make sure the clothes reach the people who need them. You could log into the website and chose either a location to make the drop or schedule a pickup from your residence. If your address is within a 7-kilometre radius, then a pickup can be arranged.
Contact details: You can reach them at 22 Saktigarh (opposite Saktigarh maath)
Jadavpur, Kolkata, 700032 or call on 033-4004-8442.
For you, the clothes might not mean anything now but are sure to bring a smile to those who get to wear them. Do your good deed today!

What to do with old Desi clothes: Declutter, Recycle and Give them New Life
You have a closet full of desi clothes that you don’t need due to the following reasons: They are out of fashion, not the right size anymore, you have worn them enough or need to make space in your closet. Most of these clothes are in great shape and have a lot of life left in them. If you are wondering what to do with old desi clothes here are five ways to recycle them in meaningful ways.
Recycling desi clothes can be challenging especially if you live outside of South Asia. Most donation centres won’t take them since the majority of their needs are for western clothes. You also don’t have lots of relatives or house help around to pass the clothes as hand-me-downs. If you desperately need to make space in your closet, here are a few suggestions of what to do with old desi clothes:
1. Arrange a Clothes Drive event
You have a lot of desi clothes lying around? guess what, so do a lot of your friends. Since you all have the same problem of what to do with old desi clothes, you can come up with a collective solution. Arrange a clothes drive, where all of you donate your used clothes in great condition. Make sure all clothes collected are washed, ironed and on a hanger. Now rent a community centre or borrow someone’s garage and arrange an event where people can come pick these clothes for free or for $1 each. Spread the word in refugee service centres, local mosques/churches/libraries/schools and desi grocery stores. You can make posters and a facebook event page. You can also ask for volunteers to provide transport to high need families. Make sure people get privacy and respect when they come to pick the clothes. A change room really helps.
2. put shadi joras to good use
Shadi joras are expensive and hardly used for more than a couple of times. While you may be tired of your jahaiz clothes (or not fitting in them anymore!), they can really help girls in Pakistan and India who are getting married and can not afford these clothes.
Organizations such as JDC welfare organization and Edhi centres are always looking for wedding clothes in great conditions. Your family in Pakistan or India might also know of families that might need these for an upcoming wedding. Get all your clothes packed, get some friends to contribute theirs too and split the cost of shipping to South Asia. Consider the shipping cost as part of your charity. Your shadi joras will bring a smile on many faces and it will definitely be worth the effort.
I recommend getting together a group of friends and all of you donate $5 for each outfit (to cover shipping cost). Now find a cargo service and send the clothes to Pakistan to donate. These services take longer but cost less also. Please make sure custom charges won’t be levied once the cargo arrives in Pakistan.
I recently used CanPak Cargo Service who operate out of Calgary and Edmonton and deliver to various cities in Pakistan. They charged us $4/kg for clothes and were quite reasonable for sending a suitcase and a big cardboard box of clothes.
Here is the contact information:
Edmonton: 403 629 1928
Calgary: 778 239 0146
3. fun swap tea
Ever heard of: One woman’s kurta is another one’s treasure? Maybe, not exactly these words but you get the meaning! If you haven’t made a trip back to Pakistan or India recently, you are always looking for a new kurta, a vibrant dupatta or a new pair of khussas without spending a lot of money buying new ones from exhibitions.
Arrange a Fun Swap Tea. Here are the rules:
Make it a one-dish and everyone brings a snack (this is a desi event, so ofcourse food comes first).
You can only bring in clothes, shoes and accessories in great condition. Clothes must be cleaned, ironed and on a hanger.
When you enter, you get a coin for every item in great shape that’s accepted (you can also use monopoly money).
Now you can use those coins to pick items that other people have brought in! One coin for one item.
Enjoy gupshup, chai and have fun picking a new wardrobe!
4. contact local organizations
Some local organizations like Value Village, Goodwill Centre etc in areas with a dense immigrant population will take desi clothes as donations. Some mosques also have collection drives. Ask around and you might be able to help someone close to you!
5. Use social media
If you need to donate your desi clothes fast and don’t have time to ask around or arrange an event, post it on social media! Most cities have “buy and sell” facebook groups or “free items one”. You can also use kijiji, craigs list etc. You can arrange for the collection to be at a public location if you don’t wish to disclose where you live. Post a picture along with size information and that it’s for free. You can put conditions such as must be collected today based on your urgency.
These were a few suggestions of what to do with old desi clothes and to recycle them in meaningful ways. If you know of a specific organization or resource, do share and I would be happy to add that information here for everyone’s benefit.

Tips on How to Get Rid of Clothes
Right now, you might have some clothes in your closet that you need to get rid of. Maybe the items no longer fit or aren’t suitable for your lifestyle anymore. Perhaps you need to make space in your closet. Or you’ve decided to embrace a minimalist lifestyle and want to purge anything that doesn’t bring you joy.
Whatever the reason, here are 13 ways to get rid of clothes you no longer wear.
Sell Gently Used Clothes to a Consignment Shop Find a consignment shop in your area that takes used clothing and bring in your items for a once over. If you have multiple consignment shops nearby, consider shopping around to see which will give you the best prices. Some stores will pay you right on the spot, while others might wait to pay you until your items sell.
Hold a Yard Sale or Garage Sale A convenient way to get rid of your clothing is to hang it up in your yard and stick on a price tag. Get the word out about your yard sale with posters around town and through social media posts in neighborhood groups. You can even have a joint sale with neighbors to draw a bigger crowd.
Donate to an Animal Shelter You can often donate linens, blankets, and towels to your local animal shelter. Call the shelter first to make sure it’s accepting donations and inquire about the specific items you’d like to donate. Some shelters accept things that others do not.
Sell Them Online Poshmark, eBay, Thredup, and Tradesy are just some of the many options where you can sell clothing online. Thredup conveniently mails you a large shipping envelope, so you can pack up your clothes and mail them. Once it has decided what it can sell, the company sends your payout minus the cost of the shipping bag. You can collect it via PayPal or a Thredup gift card. Tradesy works just like Thredup, but it favors more high-end fashion items. The Best Online Consignment Stores of 2022
Give Clothes to the Vietnam Veterans of America Sign up online at Vietnam Veterans of America to schedule a pickup, and the organization will pick up your donation right from your home. You can leave your boxes and bags of clothes on the front porch. After your first pickup, the group will email you the next time it has another scheduled pickup on your street. This option is excellent for those who are continually decluttering.
Reach Out to Dress for Success Dress for Success is a wonderful option if you’ve changed careers from attorney to yoga instructor. You may decide you no longer need five suits, and just one will do, or your sizes have changed one way or the other. Donate your used professional attire to Dress for Success, and it will get the items into the hands of women who have problems paying for business attire for an interview.
Supply Them to a Rummage Sale Many charitable organizations host rummage sales, which you can support by donating your old clothing. They’ll often accept household items you’d like to get rid of. Common organizations include churches, children’s groups, women’s shelters, and more.
Drop Off at the Salvation Army You can drop off a bag or box of clothing, small home goods, and linens to the Salvation Army. The organization will sell your items or deliver them to a shelter for those in need. The group also has a truck that will pick up donations from your home if you schedule an appointment.
Contact Local Homeless Shelters Call or email area homeless shelters to see whether they’re taking clothing donations. Be sure to ask which items they will accept. Also, ask whether the items must be sorted or boxed in a specific way before bringing them in to donate.
Organize a School Fundraiser Get in touch with your local school administrators and suggest setting up a fundraiser to benefit the school. Everyone—students, teachers, and community members—can bring in their used clothing. And then, a group of volunteers can organize the items to be sold.
Turn Used Clothing Into Rags If an item isn’t in a condition to be worn again, you can often turn it into a rag for cleaning. For instance, cotton T-shirts are great for using as dust cloths. And you can even buff a table or other furniture with a hole-filled sweater.
Give Away Hand-Me-Downs If an item is special to you, but you no longer want to wear it, you can always present it to someone in your life as a hand-me-down. If necessary, have the item professionally cleaned and restored to make it look as new as possible. Even if you’re not wearing it anymore, you should be happy to see it get a second life.

Local teen starts nonprofit to give used Indian dresses a second life
For Indian families in the U.S., it can be hard to mimic the authentic traditional style of important events such as Diwali. For many, an integral part of celebration is wearing traditional Indian clothing. While these clothes are beautiful, most kids quickly outgrow them.
Avani Bansal, 14, did not know what to do with her old Indian clothing that no longer fit her.
“I’ve had experience trying to donate them to Goodwill, but they won’t accept them because no one here really has a use for these formal, traditional clothes,” she said.
Her friends agreed with her, and that is when she realized others may have the same issue. So she started a nonprofit called Dream Dresses with the goal to collect used traditional Indian clothes that can then be distributed in India to those who want them.
“When I was little, I loved wearing fancy and traditional dresses. Now that I’m older, I see that there’s many kids in India that don’t have access to these types of clothes,” Bansal said.
On the Dream Dresses website, Bansal mentions that it is a great solution that benefits both sides. Bansal has already collected over 100 articles of clothing and is starting the distribution. She sends them to her grandmother in Mumbai, India. Then, her grandmother, along with some volunteers, sanitize the clothing before they are given to the Jayshree Foundation, a local humanitarian group. This organization then distributes the clothes to families who want them.

Bansal has also made the process of donation simple. Once patrons are ready to donate articles of clothing, they can contact Bansal through her website and she will arrange a pickup or drop off. The only conditions are that the clothes are traditional Indian in nature, in decent condition, and packaged in a box.
Processing the donations can be a lot of work, so Bansal has created volunteer opportunities to get some help. Those opportunities include collecting clothing, packing and shipping.
Bansal wants to see Dream Dresses get bigger in the long run. She has received clothing from many places in Washington state, and she hopes to expand donations from across the U.S.
She said that these fancy clothes are something that many Indian kids would want to wear.
If you are interested in donating articles of clothing or volunteering with Dream Dresses, please visit their website.

How to Donate Clothes in India? Follow These Simple Steps and You Are Done
Winter can be a harsh reality for those who don’t have the comforts that we take for granted. We must not forget that there are people who need our help to weather these cold months.
Step 1: Make the choice
Open your wardrobe and have a hard look. There must be pieces of clothing in the closet that you like but don’t wear. Pick out clothes that are still fit to wear, something you wouldn’t mind giving to your family members. Avoid donating clothes that are torn, stained or are faded. Remember that the idea is to bring a smile to someone’s face.
Step 3: Wash your clothes
Many organisations that you donate to, usually wash the clothes that they receive. However, some help from your side in terms of sorting and cleaning the donated clothes will always be welcomed. Reduce their efforts by washing and neatly folding your clothes when you donate them.
Step 4: Donate according to season
Season is an important point to keep in mind when donating. For example, you can make sure you donate blankets, sweaters and other warm clothing during winters. Similarly, in summers, pick out light comfortable clothing made from natural fabrics like cotton.
Step 5: Choose the charity
This is the step where you must go online and do some research on which charity you would like to donate your clothes to. You could choose an NGO whose causes align with your values.
Step 6: Organisations in your city
To make things easier, we are sharing a list of organisations in 10 cities across the country. For other details, click here.

Desi Clothes for INDIA, Shari Kumar, Indian clothing drive,
Desi Clothes for INDIA was launched to make the less fortunate people of India feel what they truly are – special like every one of us. We collect and donate ethnic Indian wear to the homeless, the people in sheltered homes and the children in orphanages. Additionally, this will give an opportunity to all people of Indian origin in the USA to donate their almost new or gently used fancy, traditional Indian clothes to deserving, but less fortunate people in India. Most of us have many lovely Indian clothes in our closets, but we either don’t have a place to donate them to or don’t have the heart to throw them away. We don’t wear many of these clothes anymore, but they stay in our closets forever! They are beautiful and in almost new condition, but have nowhere to go. It is extremely saddening that people in India, who do not look much different from us, have to suffer wearing old tattered clothes. Children have no special clothes to wear for a festival, or even a birthday.
Many Indian families living in the USA face the problem of not knowing what to do with all these expensive traditional Indian clothes that are outgrown or out of style, but too good to be thrown away! Most of the Indian clothes we wear in America are fine party wear attire and are almost new. Taking them to India to donate is not always possible due to the baggage weight restrictions. Unfortunately, it is sad that many would-be donors throw out perfectly good, used Indian clothes.
Like many of us, we at Desi Clothes for INDIA also have been looking for ways to donate these ethnic Indian clothes. Desi Clothes for INDIA is delighted that a few opportunities are opening up, and we will be able to send these lovely Indian clothing donations to orphanages, other sheltered homes and the homeless in India. I may be just a teenager, but in the heart of Desi Clothes for INDIA is the fervor to bring hope and empowerment to the powerless in India. We have fine Indian clothes in our closets with nowhere to go, and we have people in India who would be delighted to have them. It is a win-win situation! If each and every one of us could donate and bring a smile on someone’s face, it would be a really good deed. This nationwide, yearlong Indian clothing drive is a great way to make a difference. Let’s give back to our mother country. Let’s do it!
