Whispers and the Roars by K Webster, Paperback
***THIS STANDALONE IS BEST ENJOYED WHEN YOU DON’T READ ANY REVIEWS OR SPOILERS BEFORE READING. GOING IN BLIND IS BEST. TRUST ME.***
From USA Today bestselling author K Webster comes a gripping and emotional psychological romance standalone!
I’m a recluse.
Sad, quiet, afraid.
Sequestered in my home away from the world.
It’s better this way.
I wasn’t always alone.
I had him—my boyfriend, my best friend, my everything.
Yeo Anderson.
But I sent him away.
I was a fungus. Growing and festering. Turning his brilliant parts black with the disease otherwise known as me.
My sweet boy was sick in love. I couldn’t bear to think about what he was giving up. For me. I’d poisoned him, but it wasn’t too late. I could fix it. So, I did.
But he’s back.
The boy blossomed into a man who wants to fight me for me.
The past that rules me is dark and chaotic and violent.
It always wins.
Love isn’t supposed to be a war.
Yeo thinks our hearts, though, will win this time.
Warning:
Whispers and the Roars is a dark romance. The abuse written in this story is graphic and not glossed over, which could be upsetting to some. This story is NOT for everyone. Proceed with caution.

I almost opened a bottle of vodka at 2 a.m. You will probably consider doing something similar when you read this, so get ready! I was totally unprepared for the story that was waiting for me inside the pages of this book! Word of warning: beginning this book right before bed isn’t the best idea. I wound up reading all night long. I was so caught up in the story that I didn’t want to put it down, so I didn’t until I literally passed out and it landed on the floor! How my kindle still work
“You weren’t supposed to come back, stupid man.”

“You are strange and terrifying and beautiful, something not everyone knows how to love.”-Warsan Shire
4 RoarsI almost opened a bottle of vodka at 2 a.m. How my kindle still works is a wonder to me!Whispers and the Roars was nothing like I thought it was going to be. If you think you know what this story is going to be about, trust me, you have no idea! You have to go into this one completely blind. For that reason, this review was difficult for me to write. I can’t tell you much about the book, because almost anything I say about the plot will spoil it. Talking about my opinion and/or feelings about the things that happen will also spoil it. Don’t ask your friends who have read it to give you spoilers, because it will ruin the whole experience for you. Just sit back and enjoy the ride! This is the story of two people, Kady and Yeo, and their beautiful, unreserved, and unyielding love for one another. In the beginning, we learn that Kady and Yeo had been in a serious relationship until Yeo went off to college without Kady at her insistence. In her heart, she truly felt that her being with him was holding him back. Now that he has his degree, he is coming home to reclaim her with the intention of making her his wife. His love for her has never wavered over the years, and neither has hers for him. Despite that, Kady still thinks that Yeo is too good for her.Yeo is a brave, selfless, determined, and loving man. He is sure to melt your heart. The love he has for Kady is unconventional and unconditional. He is her lover, her protector, and her very best friend.Kady is fragile and broken, but she loves Yeo with every fiber of her being. He understands her like no one else. Sending him away from her was done with only his interest in mind. Now that he is back, she is ready to admit that she needs him in her life. If it were only that simple…..You might be thinking this sounds like something you have heard before. At first, I did, too. Believe me when I tell you this doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of what goes on in this story. It is unlike anything else I have ever read. Go into it with an open mind free from expectations, and see it through to the end before you make any judgements. There will be things that happen as you read that you won’t quite understand or don’t make sense, but keep going. It will all become clear soon enough. As with most of this author’s books, this will not be for everyone. There is some disturbing elements, but to me they weren’t that bad. However, if you have triggers for abuse of any kind, this is probably not the book for you.Whispers and the Roars both warmed my heart and broke it. It entertained me, toyed with my mind, made me cringe, made me smile, and kept me guessing. In short, I really enjoyed it! Why 4 stars instead of five? I had a few problems with it, but unfortunately, I can’t discuss them, because it will give too much away. Overall, this was still an incredible story.Once again, another book by K. Webster has made me wish that I could be inside her head for just one day. The things that she comes up with and writes about boggle my mind. She has quickly become one of my favorite authors. I read Sweet Jayne in September, and since then have read everything she has written that I can get my hands on. I will continue to do so until I have devoured every last drop of her dark genius. Whenever I read one of her stories, I know that I am in for a crazy ride, and this one was no exception! This is not a book that you will soon forget. If I can assure you of anything, it is that. Whispers and the Roars is an intricately woven and expertly executed story that will have an impact on you whether you like it or not. The characters are interesting, exceptional, and multi-faceted. The plot will have you scratching your head, clutching your heart, and glued to the page. Intriguing, thought provoking, and unique, this is one you don’t want to miss!

What I think?
I’ll say but one thing- this book is the reason people fall in love with reading.
What else?
I don’t know. It’s gonna be really hard to review this book without destroying it for others, because trust me. You need to just go in blind on this one.
Well for starters, everyone one of my friends on GR had already read it and everyone was raving about it, and it seems like I was the only one who hadn’t still touched it, although it had been on my to-read shelf for forever. Today, I just decided that to hell with it, I’ll just start reading it as I had nothing better to do, so there I was, innocently unaware of how this book was going to completely rock me.
“You are terrifying and strange and beautiful, something not everyone knows how to love.”
Unique. Terrible. Mindblowing. And Goddammit-what-the-hell-did-I-just-read.
Those are the things that come to mind when I think about this book.
The story was unique. The events in the book were terrible, and I want to cut a bitch because bastard is in jail and I can’t already cut his dick off and feed it to him. The whole plot was mindblowing, because really, read it and tell me otherwise if you can. And Goddammit-what-the-hell-did-I-just-read, because really! What the hell did I just read!
Like I said, I was flying blind, and I wanted to trust the author’s words and not read a review because she said it would make a better reading experience. So I didn’t. I didn’t even read my friend’s reviews because of that, just noted the fact that most of them loved it.
And since I can’t talk about the plot, let me talk about myself, because I’m a narcissistic bitch like that.
I was very confused in the beginning. Things were happening and I had no idea why or what with clarity, because Webster does a really good job of drawing the attention elsewhere, until you are left staring at the picture and not seeing it. Really it was so obvious, that when it did finally come to light I was like “holy fuck, no way!” That plot twist was a thing of beauty if you must know.
It was very intense, and the whole atmosphere of the book was so captivating and at the same time mysteriously sexual that I was left feeling a bit dirty in the end. The good kind.
Let me tell you, I went all “uh-oh whaa!” bigtime when I read about Yeo and Bones. And then I got surprisingly aroused. (But that is for a different time because my sexual arousals are very complicated, and I don’t understand them myself clearly lol.) That whole scene had me convinced that this book was going towards a threesome- and I wasn’t going to complain.
Here’s what I thought was happening initially (when I started the book that is)-
Bones was munching on Kady→ Kady was hopping on Yeo’s dong→ Yeo was riding Bones’ arse.
I. Couldn’t. Have. Been. More. Wrong.
More or less at least.
And Holy. Shit.
I remember thinking at around 55% that if somehow for some reason Bones wasn’t real, my heart was going to break in so many different pieces. That was a few pages before the reveal BTW. And really, I was heartbroken, but for completely different reason in the end.
This was a journey of self-discovery, acceptance and love so unconditional that it will move you to the bones. Every single character was so complex that the ending felt like watching the death of an entire family. And let’s not talk about Bones, because he was so badass that I can’t take it. That man is #goals.
Reading this book was like trying to catch will-o-wisps in a field of fireflies. Something flashes in front of your face and then you are whisked away before you can think more on it or get monumentally distracted by it. But you are left with the feeling that you’ve just seen something important because it remains stored in your head until the author was prepared to show you the bigger picture.
This was my first Webster book, and it was absolutely brilliant. Nothing less.
“She may be hiding from love, but love will eventually find her.”

*****FOUR STARS*****
{ARC Generously Provided by Author}
”You are terrifying and strange and beautiful, something not everyone knows how to love.”
K. Webster is truly talented at writing the really dark stories but she also has proven to be quite a versatile author. Never pigeon-holing herself into one genre. Whispers and the Roars definitely has its dark elements but it is also a story about true unconditional love…something that only exists in fairy tales.
I really didn’t pay attention to the blurb and it actually made the book that much more enjoyable for me. It wasn’t anything that I would ever have expected, so I advise you all to skim over the blurb and reviews. It is truly best to go into this one without having any preconceived notions. I kind of figured out what was going on right before the halfway mark as I am sure most of you will.
I’ll give a brief sum up. Kady and Yeo have been childhood friends and sweethearts since they were in elementary school. Kady’s home life was extremely horrific and she had been severely abused by her father for many years. The poor girl has endured things that no innocent child should ever have to be subjected to, but the one loving constant in her life was the beautiful boy next door, Yeo. Yeo loved Kady despite all of her complexities and always acted as her protector, till one day she pushes him away. Kady didn’t want Yeo to sacrifice his life for her when he had the ability to go off to college and make something of himself. The two end up separated for twelve years but now Yeo is back in town. He’s become a doctor and Yeo is back to claim his sweet “Katydid”. Nothing and no one is going to get in his way, not even Kady!
really loved Yeo!! I rarely get to read about a Hero who is half Korean and half White like me and the fact that Yeo was, turned out to be the icing on the cake for me!! There was one aspect that I kind of found uncomfortable because it’s a subject matter I try to avoid at all costs but the special circumstances of this story made it easier for me to bear.
Whispers and the Roars is currently available! K. Webster fans are going to really enjoy this one and for those who haven’t read her yet and can tolerate really traumatizing subject matter, should definitely add this to your TBRs.

My Review: 5 stars
So this review is going to be a bit different than some of my other reviews because this book was just so amazingly good that I will probably just ramble about the book as much as I can without giving away the plot twist.
Unconditional love, understanding, and ultimate dedication are the themes of this novel. – K. Webster
Kady is a twenty-nine year old woman that is living with demons from her past. She had a terrible childhood and lost her mother when she was young. Her father was abusive and she endured more than anyone, especially a child, should have too.
People in the town judge her. They think that she’s crazy. They think she’s a monster.
She just a broken girl who is trying to get by.
As you read Kady’s story, you learn about the people in her life that keep her going but you also learn about the people that scare her.
Officer Joe, Agatha, Presley, and Whiskers are the people (and cat) that keep Kady safe. They make her feel at ease and she loves them all.
Then you have Bones. He is her best friend and the person she leans on the most for support. He is there for her anytime she needs him and he never lets her down (except for that one time).
But then you have the people that scare her; Norman, Pascale, and Kenneth. Bones helps keep them away and Yeo used to before he left.
Years ago, her boyfriend Yeo left to go to college. She has refused to talk to him since then, even though she was the one who pushed him to leave. She knows he can do better than her. His family doesn’t understand her and what she has been through and she doesn’t want them judging him for being with her. She just wants what is best for Yeo and she believes that she isn’t what is best for him.
Yeo is now back. After finishing school and becoming a doctor, Yeo wants his life with Kady back but he knows it is going to be a hard fight to get it. He has been keeping up with how she is doing from Bones and Agatha but she always avoids him when he comes to town. He knows Kady thinks he can do better but he only wants her. He was only ever wanted her. Yeo plans to do whatever is needed to get Kady back into his life.
“Love and my moral compass duel in the dark night. Love is more fierce and unstoppable and fucking crazy. Love always wins. That moral compass never stood a chance.”
Overall thoughts:
WOW!! What a book. I can honestly say that in the beginning, I wasn’t totally feeling the book. I kept reading because I know K. Webster’s work and I knew I wasn’t going to be disappointed.
About 46% into the book I started to get very confused. I was like “What in the world is going on?” Then at about 60% I was like “I totally understand now!”
WHAT A PLOT TWIST!!!!
I never saw it coming. Like ever. But once it was reviled, everything made sense.
K. Webster is a genius. This story was amazing but it was also such a hard story to read. I takes you places that no-one would ever willing go and shows you what some people go through. This book is dark and can make you feel uneasy but it is totally worth it.
I wish I could put into words how much I loved this book but words cannot describe how this book made me feel.
At first I was only going to give this book like 3 1/2 stars but then I read the plot twist and everything made sense so…….I give this book 5 huge stars!!!

Whispers and the Roars by K. Webster
Whispers and the Roars
I one-clicked this one immediately on that blurb alone. Absolutely up my alley, and I can say that this author seems to venture into that murky-creepy-fascinating territory that I tend to gravitate to. I love exploring personal darkness, whether it be emotionally innate or environmentally influenced… or even just a bad-guy psych-thriller. My curiosity as to how these subjects will be explored, and how cleverly they will twist and astonish (and give me an adrenaline rush) keeps me hooked on this genre.
Now… before you continue onto the review below, I will assure you that I do not spoil anything, but I want to respect the author’s warning by reposting it here. I would hate for you to get any preconceived notions from my review (or my own experience of this complicated journey) and I don’t want to spoil your fun. I liked it, but for some reason, I didn’t love it (I’m still working out my feelings as to why).
Something was missing, for me (and I think it was one of the main characters. I wasn’t feeling him, as much as I wanted to). However, it did keep me hooked, and I devoured it in no time, and it’s getting rave reviews, so take from this what you will.
Here is the author’s warning:
***THIS STANDALONE IS BEST ENJOYED WHEN YOU DON’T READ ANY REVIEWS OR SPOILERS BEFORE READING. GOING IN BLIND IS BEST. TRUST ME.***
And while this one DOES venture into darker (and even trigger-inducing) territories, it’s not as “dark” (as a whole), as that blurb seems to hint at.
Lisa: Ladies (and gentlemen, if any are lurking), Whispers and the Roars is in the bag, and it was amazing. For anyone who fears it as a dark read or because it has triggers, please don’t. The triggers aren’t really in your face or over the top. It is, at it’s very core, an unconditional love story. Ela: Whispers and the Roars is not creepy at all just very mysterious.
Oh don’t get me wrong… that blurb has EVERYTHING to do with this book. It is EXACTLY right. And yet, I originally had the wrong impression entirely.
…Some may even fear me, which is ridiculous. I’m just a broken twenty-nine-year-old. Not a monster. A recluse. I’ll give them that. At one point in time, I wasn’t.
This journey, in essence has a more “new adult” feel to it (even though the characters are in their late twenties), but with a zany colorful cast of characters (that “best friends” feel) as the main character deals with her horrific past, and a tumultuous personal growth.
I may be a lonely woman, but I have some amazing people who look after me. Too bad the one I miss the most ran off to Yale University. Left his girlfriend to pursue a career. Stole my heart right from my chest. You would have held him down, Kady. He was meant to soar.
But don’t be fooled. This book gets… erratic (and it all makes sense when it does).
The beginning was a bit iffy for me, but I believe it’s ’cause it wasn’t “going” how I expected it would go from that dark-sounding blurb.
Maryse: First 25% is … sweet. Reminds me of those deep-message and growth new adult books, where one of the characters has a horrible childhood that has them suffering even as young adults. Good writing, but the tone of the blurb doesn’t match the tone of the book… from what I can tell. Yet. That said, I’m still into it! Ela: 43% into Whispers and the Roars. It’s STILL TO EARLY if y’all can believe it to make any assessments….we’re still trying to figure what the heck is going on. Nay: Yes, Ela, LisaA, and I have been having a ball on GR trying to figure out what the deal is with Whispers and the Roars. I think I’ve got it, but I’m still not positive.
BUT!! It kept me intrigued (albeit, a bit “safe” feeling) for the first half, while I guessed at what the big deal was. Where it was actually going (’cause it seemed to be just a big ol’ emotional mess and that was about it).
At one time, he had fixed everything. My life was calm and serene. He’d been instrumental in keeping Norman away. Those assholes Pascale and Kenneth never came around as long as I was with Yeo. He protected me from the bad people in my life and loved the good ones. We’d become a team. And we were unstoppable. Until I put a stop to us.
Then it got there. I guessed it RIGHT before it was confirmed, but boy oh boy there was much more to it than that.
Lisa: 73% done with Whispers and the Roars and I love it. It is labeled as dark, but I am not getting dark. I am getting a hella amazing love between the two main characters. It is a plot twist I have seen once before…but handled so beautifully. This had to be a tough writing experience for the author. Maryse: Okay I’m halfway in and I’ve totally figured it out. I know it…
And that’s where I’m ending this entire review. I get why the author says to go in blind and not to read any reviews to get the maximum impact. She’s right.
I liked it, but something about it kept me from loving it. And I have no idea what. Maybe it was just so… out there (although sheeeeeesh… I just LOVE this kind of subject matter). I’m thinking it was Yeo? There was something about him that I couldn’t get attached to. Then again, by the end, I was questioning everything.
It’s good. I enjoyed it, and pretty much devoured it (I just started it last night), but there’s something that’s keeping me from screaming it from the rooftops as “awesome”. It’s crazy, it’s intense, and maybe even… cathartic. So I don’t know what my problem is? I LOVE it when I can’t put a book down. And I LOVE this genre. And this one was well-explored so…?
I just need some time to internalize and absorb it, I think. But for now, I’m giving it:
3.75 stars!
P.S. Then again, “You” by Caroline Kepnes made a mess of me way back when I read it, and I devoured it and still initially gave it 3.75 stars. Mind you now, I toute it from the rooftops, ’cause it’s unforgettable. LOL!!!
P.P.S. Note: These books have NOTHING to do with each other, other than I have that same “weird” feeling at the end of devouring ’em. *snort* 😛

Whispers and the Roars
Good evening, bookworms. Happy (unofficial) start to the fallish season, and happy book review Tuesday! It’s been a hell of a day at the office so I didn’t get the chance to share a post earlier, but here we are. Also, if I seem a bit rambly or less coherent, that’s because I probably am. Having a day off from the office puts things behind schedule, so I can feel the energy seeping out of me. Still, I’m going to do what I can to tell you guys about this book, because it’s a good one.
Quickly, before I begin the review, I have some update news/thoughts. As usual, I have a few ideas festering and marinating in my brain, but I think I’m going to do everything in my power to go back to two posts a week. I have things I would like to write about and share with you guys in this space, so I think I’m going to try to do reviews on Tuesdays, and then another literary topic on Thursdays. What do you think?
Okay, I’m going to try not to ramble too much, so let’s get to tonight’s review. It’s another by K. Webster (the same author from last week’s featured book), but this evening, I seem to be in a bit of a pickle. How does one review a book that the author suggests you go into blind?
When you find yourself on the goodreads page for Whispers and the Roars, this is what you’ll find: ***THIS STANDALONE IS BEST ENJOYED WHEN YOU DON’T READ ANY REVIEWS OR SPOILERS BEFORE READING. GOING IN BLIND IS BEST. TRUST ME.***
In my experience with this story, I did exactly that, but I know everyone is different, so while this may not be a long review, as I don’t want to give too much away, I’ll still do my best to tell you a little bit about the journey you’ll go on with this story.
Whispers and the Roars is my second book experience with Webster and all I can say is that the girl can keep you on your toes. This is much more than a boy-meets-girl, they fall in love, and there’s drama story. I was highly suspect that there was more to Kady and Yeo’s story, and there was.. for sure. The paid have a reason (or several) that they spent some time apart when they were younger, but now that Yeo has finished school and is ready to open his practice, he wants his dream girl back. The love of his life, even with her quirks and complications.
I adored the complexity and levels in this story. There’s a whole cast of colorful characters that add to the dynamic of Kady and Yeo and help, in any way they can, to cement their bond even more. The interactions among the group really kept me guessing and kept me loving Yeo and Lady even more from a different perspective.
Although I’ve read similar plot lines in other novels, K. Webster has a way of making her story unique. While I could sense things weren’t always what they seemed, it didn’t mean that I wasn’t surprised when I came across what I had been searching for since I began reading this story.
I don’t want to say much more otherwise I’ll wind up blabbing and giving out spoilers, which I feel like I’ve been doing with several of my reviews lately. For now, I’m going to sign off and just say that this was one hell of an adventure and I enjoyed every minute I spent buried in this book, and I know you will too. If you haven’t already, pick up a copy and happy reading!
My Final Rating: five out of five stars
