What Are the Advantages of a Tile Roof?

While residents have many choices for their roofing, a walk or drive through the average Arizona neighborhood can reveal a clear favorite; tile roofs are the overwhelming majority.

Why do so many homes in Arizona have tile roofing? Between a long life span and creating the right look, tile can be beneficial in more ways than you may realize.

Durability and Longevity

If you have lived In Phoenix for any amount of time, you may have noticed the fluctuations in the weather.

When tile has been properly installed, it can withstand extremes from intense storms in monsoon seasons, to the scorching heat of summer. Tile is resistant to wind, heat, rot, and insect damage.

Tile is the water shedding component of a tile roof system. The waterproofing component is the underlayment beneath the tile. Although the tile portion can last 50-60 years the underlayment will likely need replacement every 12-20 years dependent on the material used and workmanship when installed. When your underlayment approaches the end of its useful life you will need to perform what is called a tile R&R. No it doesn’t mean your tile needs a vacation. It is a process by which the tile is Removed, the underlayment is Replaced, and the tile is set back onto the roof.

That said, there are still quality choices when it comes to choosing the tile. Clay tile is far and away the longest lasting choice. With proper maintenance, clay can last for 60+ years. If you decide to go with the less expensive (but still remarkably durable) option of concrete tile, you can still reasonably expect to see 50 to 60 years of service. However, if your home faces a golf course- all bets are off.

When it comes to the structural integrity of your home, a tile roof can make a huge impact.

Added Value: Curb Appeal

Another reason why owners tend to install a tile roof is curb appeal. There is no getting around it, a tile roof looks great and matches with a desert landscape.

If your home is more desirable, then your home is more valuable.

While the initial installation can be on the pricey side, the long term benefit may more than offset this cost. Did you ever consider that your choice of roofing material can work to keep money in your pocket over the long term?

Should I Consider a Tile Roof?

Even with the advantages of tile, choosing a roofing material is not always an easy choice. Preferences can vary greatly and this decision must be made with careful deliberation.

Two of the main considerations when choosing a tile roof are the weight and the cost.

Depending on the size of your project, it is not uncommon for a roof to cost upwards of $20,000. Again, concrete can offer a less expensive alternative.

While a resident may want a tile roof, their house simply may not be able to support the weight. Some houses are designed with lighter roofing materials in mind and may be incompatible with tile.

Choosing to go with a material such as concrete or slate can lighten the load on both your wallet and your roof.

The truth is that the desert offers a great many native plants, including wildflowers and various cacti, pink and red rocks, palm and palo verde trees, tumbleweeds, and other elements that create a unique look for homes that you can’t find anywhere else.

Backyard Pools

Like flip-flops and lemonade, pools are a summertime staple. Phoenix, Arizona homes are well known for their pools. In-ground pools provide a permanent retreat from the heat and cater to the homeowner’s personal style while above-ground pools offer flexibility since they can be assembled and taken down as needed. Regardless of the style you choose, a pool is a common element to look for when buying houses in Arizona.

Stucco

Available in a variety of colors, textures and finishes, stucco is a very common material in Arizona homes. Stucco offers a variety of practical benefits in addition to its variety of styles, such as fire resistance (important for the dry heat), insulation, low maintenance, and low cost. 5 Reasons Porcelain Tile is the Best Flooring for Homes in Humid Climate

Homeowners in humid regions always seem to be in a dilemma about which flooring to get. Especially those in the Rio Grande Valley due to its all-year mild to extremely hot weather.

Of all the types of flooring for homes, it gets difficult for you to choose one that can withstand the humidity and remain in good shape for years.

In most South Texas locations, porcelain tiles are the best flooring option. Porcelain tiles provide all-year comfort and last longer.

While you may be picturing tiles as the only option for bathrooms and kitchen. New trends and tile design, more so with porcelain, can be installed throughout the house.

Here are 5 compelling advantages of porcelain tiles over other floor types:

1. Absorbs Very Little Moisture

House interiors in wet areas tend to retain moisture. This makes floors susceptible to damage in the long run. Non-porcelain floors are more susceptible to this type of moisture damage.

The porcelain tile composition offers natural resistance against moisture. This makes them a perfect flooring choice for homes in South Texas.

Hardwood flooring is susceptible to retaining large amounts of water as well as facilitating mold growth. In contrast, porcelain floors absorb very little moisture. Additionally, they are particularly ideal if you have children or pets in the house that often cause disorderly spills on the floor.

2. Harder and More Durable

Porcelain may look like a delicate material. Often, it may even be regarded as such. But porcelain tile is actually a highly-durable, long-lasting, and scratch-resistant type of flooring.

Porcelain is manufactured at a very high temperature. This makes it more durable and harder than other types of materials used for floors.

Its water-resistant nature and almost nonexistent maintenance and repairs, makes it the go-to flooring option for homes in South Texas climate. Installed by a professional using an equally quality grout, your porcelain tiles can last for decades without posing major issues.

3. Low Maintenance

Porcelain tile flooring may be pricier compared to other available flooring options. But in the long run you end up saving more money due to less care expenses. The higher upfront costs make up for the significant savings you can make on its low maintenance. Porcelain tile seldom gets major repairs. You’ll only need a low budget to fix minor abrasion.

Since it is moisture-resistant, long-term maintenance and regular cleaning are simple tasks. All you need to clean your porcelain flooring are a mild detergent and a mop; you have a great looking floor for many years to come.

4. Porcelain Tile Keeps Rooms Cool

Summer times in McAllen and other Rio Grande Valley cities come with the hot weather and high humidity in the air; people take to the pool to cool off. However, when even a few minutes in the outdoors become unbearable, there is nothing to do than take shelter indoors.

But the humid climate gets carried into the home, too, and moisture-retaining flooring can wreak havoc and put a damper on your mood. But when you are surrounded by porcelain tiles, it keeps all the rooms so much cooler than other materials.

5. Endless Flooring Design Options

Porcelain flooring is available in various textures and styles. These styles can suit the tastes of each homeowner. Some tiles mimic the texture of hardwood flooring. While offering the same high level of sophistication with added benefits.

Porcelain can also be engineered to replicate the aesthetic and qualities of stone, cement, and other materials. You can even go for a combination of colors and styles, and customize as per your need and lifestyle. All styles nicely matching the RGV home styles.

Bottomline

We completely recommend tiles as the best flooring materials for homes in the Rio Grande Valley’s climate. Compared to other types of home flooring, tile flooring offers a hard surface flooring and aesthetic appeal.

In terms of durability and versatility, it can be used in many ways and comes in many styles. It needs minimal cleanup and maintenance, handles the hot weather well, and lasts for decades. What more can a homeowner ask for? Discover Gilsa’s porcelain tile options.

Why You Should Consider Tile Flooring For Your Home

In some parts of Jamaica, people don’t have screens on their windows. If wind blows dust or dirt around, it can easily end up inside people’s homes there. It’s no wonder, then, that most Jamaican homes don’t have rugs. Instead, they have tile flooring and they do a lot of sweeping. In places like Arizona, where desert sand is never too far away, it also makes sense to consider tile flooring at home.

The Benefits of Tile Flooring

While you could have rugs in your home, tile flooring makes sense for many reasons. Tile is affordable, durable, plentiful, and attractive. It works well for high traffic areas and doesn’t need much maintenance. If you spill something on tile, you just wipe it up using a mop or a paper towel and water. Tile won’t stain like carpet will. Tile is water resistant. With a glazed protective layer, for example, ceramic tiles are impervious to water damage and stain penetration. That’s why so many bathrooms utilize tile… no matter the climate, tile floor bathrooms are popular worldwide!

Did you know tile is made from raw materials like glass, sand and clay? In other words, tile is eco-friendly and natural. Tile tends to stay cool even when it’s hot outside and/or warm when it’s cooler outside. Installing tile flooring ultimately helps reduce heating bills.

Of all types of flooring, tile is perhaps the most cost effective. Why is that? Well, tiles are fairly cheap to buy and install. They last a super long time. And they don’t require much, if any, maintenance. If you have an attractive tile floor in your house, it can even help boost its resale value should you decide to sell.

Finally, a good reason to choose tile flooring has to do with air quality. Alternatives like vinyl and rugs have what’s called a low “VOC” output, which means they give off volatile organic compounds into the air– not the healthiest. Tile, on the other hand, gets fired in a kiln at a high temperature, so much so that it doesn’t contain any VOCs. The result is that people with tiles in their homes ultimately breath better air.

Tile Roofs for Arizona Homes

Tile roofing was used in the Roman times, so it is the oldest form of roofing material for protection. They were later joined by sand-cast and concrete roofing tiles. It is common in warmer areas of the United States of America like Arizona. This Spanish comfort is described by the bright red clay tile roof.

Tile roofing in Arizona offers long-lasting protection against elements like UV rays and rainfall. It is estimated to have an average service life of 50 years; in fact, it can go up to 100 years depending on the maintenance. Therefore, they are the most enduring roofing materials in the roofing industry. But, even though they can withstand heat, cold, or rain, they are also known to be fragile in nature as they can break under great pressure. You will have to keep replacing them to achieve an airtight roof.

Tile roofs keep homes in Arizona appear with a rustic and warm elegance due to the complementing earth tones and natural settings. Its colors can match any home architecture and design. This aesthetics value does not come for free: it is an expensive product. You will need to spend on tile fitting, reinforcing and replacing the underlayment if you want maximum protection.

It is logic that the material used in making these tiles—clay, concrete, and sand—do not catch fire easily. However, the innovations in manufacturing thinner and lighter tiles do not erase that fact that it is heavier than other types of roofing materials. The stability of Clay and sand-cast tile roofing requires a solid underlayment, so you need professional tile roofer with a promising structural engineering design.

The durability of the hardened clay is attributed to its resistance to deterioration. When the tiles are exposed to more heat, they get harder to create a condition where the material is safe from the infiltration of termites, insects, mildews and other pests. This does not mean that you do not require maintenance. You will need to check your roof for broken tiles and provide repairs of the same to provide security and prevent further damage- professional service is required in this process since the tiles can break under a man’s weight.

The replacement of the underlayment, after 10 years, is an involving process that requires the removal of the tiles and then make your repairs. After fixing the underlayment the tiles are returned, so this can be a costly roofing practice in case damages occur during the replacement and removal processes.

In conclusion, the tile roofing is a smart choice for homeowners in Phoenix or anywhere else in Arizona. It is also advantageous when one is considering to sell his or her home in the tough home selling markets in the future. Tile roofing increases the value of your home. Most of the preserved century-old house come with tile roofing in a very expensive offer.

Phoenix Tile Floors are Great for Winter

Why Ceramic Tile is a Fantastic Choice for Your Phoenix Home this Winter Season

Why Ceramic Tile is a Fantastic Choice for Your Phoenix Home this Winter Season! Here are just a few of the many reasons why tile is a great winter floor choice ! Phoenix, Arizona

Phoenix doesn’t get much of a winter compared to the rest of the country. In fact, many snow birds from northeastern states fly to Arizona for the coldest months of the year to get a reprieve from the heavy snow and ice at their homes.

While Phoenix certainly has a temperate and pleasant climate throughout the year, it does get colder temperatures during the winter, and it does experience some seasonal changes, however minor. Of course, the changes are more dramatic in areas that experience a change in elevation, such as the lower desert valleys and the mountain areas.

Your home can take a toll based on these changes, in particular your floors. Ceramic tile is an excellent choice for Arizona homes all year long, but especially in the winter. Here are just a few of the many reasons why:

They are Durable

Wood floors are popular right now thanks to their beautiful, warm look. But wood floors are also susceptible to a wide range of damage, including from water and dirt. The floors can swell and buckle, and they can scratch and dull easily.

Ceramic floors are resistant to most damage. They can endure foot traffic without scratching or easily staining.

While you don’t have to worry much about snow and ice in Arizona, it’s not entirely absent. Temperatures can go below freezing at night, and if you head outside to start your car, you can track water from the frost into your home. That can add up to a big problem for your floors day after day — but not if you have ceramic tile floors.

If you live in an area near a higher elevation, you could also track in the salt that is used to treat roads to keep them free of snow and ice. Those chemicals are very damaging to most floors, but ceramic tile withstands them easily.

They are Easy to Clean

You don’t need special cleaners or maintenance to keep ceramic tile floors looking great. You just need to sweep and mop them to keep them free of dirt and debris. You can mop the floors using any all-purpose cleaner — even dish soap.

Hardwood floors, on the other hand, require a lot of upkeep, including the use of specialty cleaners. Ditto for pressed laminate flooring.

With ceramic tile floors, you can just sweep and mop and not have to worry about anything else.

They Accept Radiant Heating

One of the complaints about ceramic and other tile floors is that they can be cold. That’s great when you’re dealing with the brutal Arizona summers, but it’s not so great when the temperature drops during the coldest months and at night.

Of course, you can put down throw rugs to provide a soft and warm place to walk. But if you really want to create a luxurious feeling for your home, you can add radiant heating to your floors, which ceramic tile accepts well.

Radiant heating is placed under your floors, and it heats the flooring. You’ll feel like you are walking around in warm, cozy socks, but you’ll have nothing on your feet. You may only need to turn on the radiant heating a couple of months out of the year, but you’ll love having it when you do.

They Look Beautiful

Even in Arizona, the winter landscape can look a bit bleak. Not as much is blooming, and the skies are gray and overcast. Coming home should feel welcoming, and ceramic tile floors will ensure that it does.

Ceramic tile floors have a beautiful look that will improve the profile of any home. You can buy the tile in a wide variety of colors and patterns, so you can create just the decor that you want. You can create a bright and sunny look that is more reminiscent of spring, and you can enjoy it all year long.

They are Easy to Restore

Ceramic tile may be resistant to a lot of damage, but it is not invincible. If you have not taken at least the minimum steps to protect your floors — such as cleaning them regularly and wiping your feet before you come inside to minimize the dirt and water you bring in — then your floors will start to show signs of wear.

Ceramic tile can become stained or scratched, and the grout can become dark and dingy. This damage can make the floors look old and unattractive.

Fortunately, these floors are easy to restore with professional ceramic tile and grout cleaning. Professional ceramic tile floor restoration can remove the tough stains that even the strongest cleaners aren’t able to remove. Professional Phoenix tile cleaning can give the floors back the color that you forgot they had. The floors will look brand new again.

Ceramic tile floor restoration can also remove some fine scratching, returning the original, smooth surface. Those scratches can trap dirt and contribute to staining, so getting rid of the scratches can also restore the color of the tile.

Why do homes in the south have so much tile? : NoStupidQuestions

Currently living in the Pacific Northwest but moving to Arizona. I’m trying to figure out the rational behind the homes being so different.

Stucco instead of siding, Tiles instead of hardwood floors, Tiled roofs instead of shingles.

I know it’s a lot hotter there, but can anyone go more indepth as to why these changes?

Thank you,
