Wyoming Valley Quilt Block Free Tutorial
Let’s give a nod to my southern neighbors and look at the Wyoming Valley quilt block today. I used the traditional coloring for this 12″ finished block – one light, one medium, and one dark fabric. I have seen examples with more than just the three colors and it is lovely that way too. Let’s get started!
Fabric Requirements for a 12″ Finished Wyoming Valley Quilt Block:
Light/White: 1 – 4.5″ square, 4 – 2.5″ x 4.5″ rectangles, 6 – 3″ squares, and 12 – 2.5″ squares
Medium/Navy Print: 6 – 3″ squares, and 4 – 2.5″ squares
Dark/Navy: 4 – 2.5″ x 4.5″ rectangles, and 8 – 2.5″ squares
Sewing Directions:
Center Unit:
Step 1:
Using the Light/White 4.5″ square and the four Medium/Navy Print 2.5″ squares, sew together a Square in a Square unit for the center of the block as shown in the picture below. You can find my tutorial for sewing a Square in a Square block at https://fabric406.com/blogs/fabric406-blog/how-to-sew-a-basic-square-in-a-square-block
Chevron Units:
Step 2:
Take the four Dark/Navy 2.5″ x 4.5″ rectangles and eight Light/White 2.5″ squares and make four Flying Geese units as shown below. The Flying Geese tutorial can be found at https://fabric406.com/blogs/fabric406-blog/how-to-sew-a-basic-flying-geese-block
Step 3:
Now you can make four more Flying Geese units but reverse the coloring – four Light/White 2.5″ x 4.5″ rectangles and eight Dark/Navy 2.5″ squares as shown below.
Step 4:
Take one Step 2 unit and one Step 3 unit and sew them together to make a dark chevron design. Press the seam allowance as shown in the picture below.
Corner Units:
Step 5:
Using the Light/White 3″ squares and the Medium/Navy Print 3″ squares, sew together 12 Half Square Triangle units. You can find my tutorial for making a Half Square Triangle block at https://fabric406.com/blogs/fabric406-blog/how-to-sew-a-basic-half-square-triangle-block
Step 6:
Lay out a Light/White 2.5″ square and three Step 5 Half Square Triangle units in a Four Patch configuration and sew into two rows as shown in the picture below. Press the seam allowances as shown too.
Step 7:
Now sew the two rows together and press the seam allowance toward the Light/White 2.5″ square as shown in the picture below.
Putting It All Together:
Step 8:
Lay out the Center unit, the Chevron units, and the Corner units as shown in the picture below. This is a typical Nine Patch layout.
Step 9:
Now you can sew the units into three rows and …
Step 10:
Press the seam allowances away from the Chevron units as shown in the picture below.
Step 11:
Sew the three rows together and you are done!
Step 12:
Except for the pressing! Press the seam allowances toward the center of the Wyoming Valley quilt block as shown below. That’s a bunch of seams and not the easiest to press!
Conclusion:
I really like the look of the Wyoming Valley quilt block but I’m not entirely sure I did the best job of figuring out which way to press seams. The seam intersections get really bulky because not all of them nested. Pressing seams open might be an option. Anyway, I am going to go back and see if there’s a better way to press the seams and I’ll keep you updated on that!
Interestingly, I took the pictures of these steps at night (dentist was able to get me in this afternoon so I worked in the evening to make up time) and the navy blue looks black in the pictures. Even though I had good lighting, I still needed that natural light filling the room to get the proper color!
I hope you like the Wyoming Valley quilt block and watch for my update on the block!
Happy Quilting!
Elaine

How to Make the Wyoming Valley Quilt Block
Join me this year as I provide instructions for how to make a different quilt block each month. Eventually, all these blocks will turn into a great quilt! For the month of April, we are making the Wyoming Valley Quilt Block.
For a 12 inch finished block (12.5 inch unfinished), you will need to cut the following:
Light Color – 8 of 3 x 3 inch squares Dark Color – 8 of 3 x 3 inch squares White – 16 of 3 x 3 inch squares White – 4 of 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch squares Sew
Make the half square triangles. On the back of the white 3 inch squares, draw a diagonal line, corner to corner. Pin a color 3 inch square to the white square, right sides together. Stitch on both sides of the drawn line, a scant 1/4 inch away. Cut on the drawn line, and press to the color side. Trim to be 2 1/2 inches by 2 1/2 inches. Repeat with the other 3 inch squares. Layout the HSTs and the remaining squares to match the picture and stitch them together in rows. Press. Then, stitch the rows together. Press. If you have any questions, please leave a comment below.
Check back each month for a new How-To of quilt blocks! To see the other blocks, just search my blog for Quilt Guild Block of the Month.
If you would like a PDF digital download of these instructions, check out Group #5 of the How-To Quilt Block of the Month. Also, please check out the other blocks that are available for download here.
(This is classic block that has been designed by many people. As I have mentioned before, these block designs come from the book 5500 Quilt Block Designs by Maggie Malone. (c) 2003 but these instructions are written by me.)
Have fun quilting!
Starry Night Quilt BOM – The Sewing Loft

Wow, this year is flying by and today, I’m sharing the very last block in the 2016 Block of the Month Sew Along. Wyoming Valley is our final make for this quilt top.
Measuring at 12″ finished, the Wyoming Valley quilt block is going to be a stunner of a focal point!
To help you achieve block success, I’ve put together a few of my favorite tips.
Wyoming Valley Quick Tips-
The first thing you’ll notice is all the cut pieces. Well, I’m not going to sugar coat things, this block requires time and patience on the cutting table. To help speed things along, I’ve reworked the the first cut to help you save yardage.
This block requires a bunch of HST’s. So it is best to mark your sew line in advance or use a laser guide if you have one.
Be sure to nest your seams to prevent bulk and issues during the quilting process.
I’m really loving this block and think I’m going to super, duper size it for a medallion style quilt when this one is finished. Ready to get started?
Remember, the Starry Night Quilt Sampler was designed to showcase traditional quilt blocks with a modern twist and I am so excited to see your quilt blocks come together. Be sure to share them on social media using the #StarryNightQuilt for us to see!
Well that’s it for now, be sure to take a quick break once you’ve finished because next month we digging into final assembly of our Starry Night Quilt Sampler.
Wyoming Valley Quilt Block
The Wyoming Valley Quilt Block is made from a careful arrangement of half-square triangles. Interestingly, the block can be constructed as either a four-patch or a nine-patch.
Here are some examples of the block in action in quilt layouts:
“Barn” Quilt Block – Star Valley Quilt Trail
In the summer of 2019, the Star Valley Quilt Trail challenged the residents of Star Valley to join other Wyoming cities to put this valley on the Wyoming Quilt Trail map by designing and installing “barn” quilt blocks on their homes, outbuildings, businesses – anywhere they could be viewed from the road.
The gratifying response to our challenge was met with great enthusiasm. There were 32 blocks entered by 25 families. Thank you all so much!!
Our judges: Robert King, commissioner; Sarah Hale, SVI Media; Linda Taylor, renowned quilt artist. All gave of their time to judge each “barn” quilt block individually. They were challenged to narrow this field of widely varying designs to the top four. The winners are:
First Prize: Sunflower by: Kathy and Mike Clay – 5481 Hwy 34, Freedom
Second Prize: Cascading Stars by: Pat Carter and Don Snyder – 107711 Hwy 89, Etna
Third Prize: Patriotic Pinwheel by: Marilyn Heggenstaller – 5030 Bedford Turnerville Rd, Turnerville
Star Valley Quilt Trail Prize: Sugar Star by: Nola, Myla, Kyla and Ella Simpson – 390 Roberts Rd, Thayne
Click the link below to view a Google Map with locations and photographs of the “barn” blocks in the valley. All quilt blocks will be on the map. In fact, included on the map are “barn” quilt blocks that were not entered in the contest. If you are inspired to paint a quilt block for your building, “barn”, or home and would like to be included on the Wyoming Quilt Trail contact us: [email protected] Quilt blocks are to be viewed from a road. Recommended size is 4’ x 4’, minimum size is 2’ x 2’, and stunning size is 8’ x 8’.
These blocks will be a source of pride for the entire valley for years to come. The “Barn” Quilt Blocks will be part of the next Star Valley Quilt Trail, August 19-21, 2021, enticing even more visitors to our valley.
